Good Morning!
Today we’re listening to “Invisible Thing” by Dazy
It’s been a long week, so we’re going with something short and sweet to carry you into the weekend.
Dazy is one of those projects that seems to have gone from something only a dozen or so people knew about—> to a mass-produced secret—> to everywhere all at once in the span of weeks.
I read a lot of music blogs, reviews, etc., and it felt like almost all of them have covered the band at one point or another recently.
Or rather, him.
Dazy is actually the one-man band of Richmond, VA. -based James Goodson. He’d been quietly releasing singles and EPs for a while before putting everything on MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD: The First 24 Songs in 2021.
"‘Invisible Thing' is the newest song on this collection, and I think of it as the sharpest version of what I was trying to do with the first year of Dazy songs. It has a lot of melody, a lot of noise, a beat that you could pogo or dance to, and it's short. There's just some weird magic about drum machine sounds colliding with really raw guitars, and I'm always chasing that.”
James Goodson, aka Dazy, speaking to Brooklyn Vegan
“Invisible Thing” is the kind of track that reminds you of everyone yet still sounds brand new. To my ear, there are hints of everyone from Jesus & Mary Chain (who Goodson namechecks in almost every interview) to Primal Scream to Husker Du. His Bandcamp page describes it as something that sounds like Godflesh covering Oasis—or maybe the other way around.
It’s blistering and woozy all at once. It’s melodic, swirling, and frenetic. Just when you think you’ve had enough, it ends.
And leaves you wanting more.

More:
“I really strongly feel that whatever sounds cool works. I'm not big on it all having to be analog or all be on a computer. If it sounds cool to you, that should be it. It wasn't until even later that I became comfortable with that in other ways. Most of the recordings are guitars that were recorded out of an amp into a mic and you can kind of hear the air in the room and all that kind of stuff, but there are also guitars mixed in that go right into a pre-amp and have that kind of crazy computer sound to them and I like the way that sounds sometimes. I know a lot of people don't like the way that sounds, but for some reason it really appeals to me.”

Thanks for being here,

P.S. Are looking for more satire in your life? Who isn’t? The Town Crier has you covered. Think of it as if The Onion and Weekend Update had a baby. A funny baby.
"Godflesh covering Oasis" okay you have my attention.
You know I had OUTOFBODY on my best of 2022, but it was MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD where I first discovered Dazy and I would try and get people on the bandwagon back then. Happy to see he/they’re finally getting the attention they deserve.
