On to the music:
For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation. This week has again been more of a balance between new tracks and old faves, with a local favorite thrown in for good measure.
2025 might be a hot mess, but not where new music is concerned.
As most of you have seen, I am a huge fan of the music streaming platform Qobuz. The sound quality is second to none, and the entire UX is fantastic. Thanks to our friend Kenn Richards, you can now see it for yourself.
I’m thrilled to share this exclusive offer for 2 free months. Not an ad, and there’s no catch. Just hella good sound quality, solid recommendations tailored to your tastes, and editorials well worth your time.
Happy Labor Day, Kev and On Repeaters from the US! On my turntable this morning: X by INXS. Because the week starts with some punch or doesn't start at all.
Last week I stumbled upon this acoustic version of Tonic's Lemon Parade. Dropped the D on my acoustic and have been playing Open Up Your Eyes all week.
Last Friday Stephen Wilson Jr. released an ep of covers with Something in the Way, Hunger Strike and Tonight, Tonight.
Maybe it's all the protest activity, but I can't seem to get enough of Rage Against the Machine, esp Bulls on Parade; it just inspires the grit I'm feeling!
Baby Goth, as my friends affectionately call my daughter (we were all goth back in the mid 80s when it was new wave/punk), has entered a grunge phase, so while running errands this week, we listened to Nirvana. Nevermind then In Utero.
34 years is how long I’ve been singing the lyrics to Lithium wrong. My daughter says to me “This song would have been much darker if the lyrics were ‘I’m not coming back’ instead of ‘I’m not going to crack’”
I've been spending some time with albums that I've already previously determined will make my year-end best of list. I have a bad habit of getting so focused on new releases each week that I fail to go back and enjoy album releases from earlier in the year.
If you're looking for instrumental hard rock, look no further than Paul Gilbert.
I know, I know - this is old news, but he has only entered my world in the last few years, and I'm enjoying his rendition of a Dio song at the moment, where the guitar sort of handles the vocalizations.
Happy Labor Day to those in the States. We'll start with the big ticket item - on Saturday, I acquired tickets to see Ethel Cain live on 9/13 at Terminal B in Buffalo on her Willoughby Tucker tour. I'll need to get familiar with her second album before the show - I hope it is as good as the first!
Outside of that, although I have not listened to any albums in full recently, I'm been diving into EDM and drum and bass a fair bit. Artists like Andrew Bayer and Pendulum have been on heavy rotation recently.
- Kathleen Edwards - Billionaire. Oh man, this is so good. I can't imagine anything will beat it out for my record of the year. Can't wait to see her here in October.
- Jason Isbell - Southeastern. Because he co-produced and played on her record, I revisited Southeastern and while I recognize the quality of the writing and playing, he's just not my thing.
- Drive-By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera. The one time I saw Isbell with DBT was just before the release of Decoration Day, IIRC. It's one of the loudest shows I've ever seen. DBT are like Isbell in that, on paper, I should love them, but I'm just lukewarm on them. But I revisit them once a year to see if it's the right time.
Looking forward to the playlist (The Beths!) and your picks.
Hi Max! I like her records the same way I like cotton candy. I know that sounds derogatory, but it's not. I think they're sunny bits of ear candy that (for me) are perfect in the right place/time.
I think a pop star would take cotton candy as a compliment! I also think her previous album just sounded great from front to back, which is definitely not how i feel about this one
I listened to the new Beths album 3 days in a row and today isn't over yet. Also gone in on the new Hives and Ron Sexsmith albums. The Sexsmith is really strong - check out opening track "Don't Lose Sight."
I also can't quit the new Superchunk or Kathleen Edwards albums.
I found a first press of The Cure’s Standing on the Beach this weekend while in NYC so that’s what I’m currently playing. That collection of singles is what got me into The Cure so I just had to get it!
I've been listening to NIN's 2008 album The Slip and an electronic duo I recently discovered from the late nineties, noonday underground's Self Assembly record.

I LOVE INXS!
So do I! Especially The Swing, Kick and X.
I love them all, but Shabooh Shoobah and Listen Like Thieves are my favorites!
I don't think I've listened to those. I'll check them out. Thank you!!
(Gasp!)
Oh man, you gotta check ‘em out!
I’ll make sure I’ll put that right!
My #1 favorite song is “This Time” (listen like thieves) and #2 is “Don’t Change” (Shabooh Shoobah)
Thanks!
Same here. Listen Like Thieves is an all-time favorite!
Listen Like Thieves is turning 40 soon!
Yes! I got the 40th anniversary edition of it on vinyl a few months ago!

It Must Have Been Love - Roxette
Ah, Roxette- The soundtrack to many awkward (for me) middle school dances. lol.
Maybe it's all the protest activity, but I can't seem to get enough of Rage Against the Machine, esp Bulls on Parade; it just inspires the grit I'm feeling!
Their sound seems as timely as ever, doesn't it?
Baby Goth, as my friends affectionately call my daughter (we were all goth back in the mid 80s when it was new wave/punk), has entered a grunge phase, so while running errands this week, we listened to Nirvana. Nevermind then In Utero.

What?!?!?
🤯
I've been spending some time with albums that I've already previously determined will make my year-end best of list. I have a bad habit of getting so focused on new releases each week that I fail to go back and enjoy album releases from earlier in the year.
This past week it's been:
- Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory
- Glutton For Punishment by Heartworms
- Late for an Early Grave by Butcherbird
- Billboard Heart's s/t album
- Mary and the Hyenas OST by Billy Nomates
There's also a band called Billboard Heart?
Oops my mistake! Billboard Heart by Deep Sea Diver
That's what I thought. Fantastic album that will definitely be on my year-end list too.
I know it's only September, but this one's on my leaderboard too.
Also, not to be pedantic but Butcherbird is a song on the album Late for an Early Grave by Bashful Billy!
Omigod, you’re absolutely correct, what on earth was going on with me yesterday?!?
Great track though so a forgivable mistake.
If you're looking for instrumental hard rock, look no further than Paul Gilbert.
I know, I know - this is old news, but he has only entered my world in the last few years, and I'm enjoying his rendition of a Dio song at the moment, where the guitar sort of handles the vocalizations.
Well, if it's old news, I'm late to the party, too!
Really incredible stuff - sounds like he is talking with his guitar, and the songs? they rock.

Oh, nice! should be a great show!
Happy Labor Day! My week was about:

I really need to sit down with this Kathleen Edwards record. It's pretty clear I've been missing out on something extraordinary.
Happy Labor Day and workers over Billionaires march day.

As always, thanks for the links! Keep 'em comin'!
Max here! Listening to the new Sabrina Carpenter album. Liking it though??? Mixed thoughts…
Hi Max! I like her records the same way I like cotton candy. I know that sounds derogatory, but it's not. I think they're sunny bits of ear candy that (for me) are perfect in the right place/time.

I’m not saying I listened to “Take” a few times in a row on the drive home today, but I’m not not sayin’ it, either.
Beths album is so good!
¡Los Callejeros! Son de Buenos Aires. Creo que te gustarían.
¡Gracias! Lo escucho hoy.
Hopefully, I got that right. Mi Español es muy malo.
I found a first press of The Cure’s Standing on the Beach this weekend while in NYC so that’s what I’m currently playing. That collection of singles is what got me into The Cure so I just had to get it!
No way! That's a killer find!
I love this new song. Super catchy pop https://youtu.be/YrAyt91xwBY?si=jpcyBfLaFqUciyMd
Definitely catchy! I'm loving the sound. Thanks, Rick!

And a bunch of other stuff: https://weatheredmusic.ca
Thanks for the link, Norman! Great--and timely- mix this week!
Just now listening to The Beaches album No Hard Feelings which I like a lot. Also just caught up with Caity Baser’s EP There, I Said It which is excellent. Love this track! https://open.spotify.com/track/2ITF7xW0k7WPKHAYMhLm7g?si=d3bIUt-0TVuIF3w8EZqyzg
Love this one from Madison Cunningham too https://open.spotify.com/track/3E0J3bhXAc5J7UCplVLcyS?si=2ex4-746QkO-9-OwP6nPaA
Thank, Lou! Adding these to this AM's playlist now.
I've been listening to NIN's 2008 album The Slip and an electronic duo I recently discovered from the late nineties, noonday underground's Self Assembly record.
This is a new one for me. I’m on it!
(Come to think of it, I’m not sure I’ve listened to The Slip, either?)
A couple of new-ish songs here Kevin. Already finding some cool new stuff for the next week! https://danpal.substack.com/p/new-music-from-the-slow-readers-club?r=lru5s
Right on. Thanks is for this!

Fantastic picks, Lancelot!
Hey thanks Kevin, to be clear: they're not picks. It's literally just whatever I discovered in the month of August if I remember to add it.
