For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation. This week, we’ve got new sounds from Smut, Stereolab, Mekons, and more!
Now it’s your turn.
What caught your ear this week? Did you shop Record Store Day? If so, what’d you pick up?
Before you go: As most of you have seen, I am a huge fan of music the streaming platform Qobuz. The sound quality is second to none, and the entire UX is fantastic. Thanks to our friend Kenn Richards, you can now see it for yourself.
I’m thrilled to share this exclusive offer for 2 free months. Not an ad, and there’s no catch. Just hella good sound quality, solid recommendations tailored to your tastes, and editorials well worth your time.
Note: The codes will be sent out by an actual human over the next several days. Please be patient.
This has clearly overshadowed everything else this week, although I do like the new releases from Honeymoan and Suede (even if 1 hr 19 is far too long!)
My monthly playlists were getting huge so I’m now making them weekly. Here is my pick of this weeks releases:
Great playlist btw. I love Mudcrawlers. Such a good opener!
Also, I unexpectedly got to see Man/Woman/Chainsaw on RSD and was blown away!!!! Definitely worth checking out. Their recent single, Adam and Steve is great.
To me, it already feels better than many other records which have long been considered classics. My question had more to do with whether it was too early to call it a classic seeing as it’s less than 20 years old.
*** Dead Pioneers 'Po$t American' - Celebrate Liberation Day! Play it loud outside an empty, burning K-Mart. RATM in a Jello mold.
*** Two-Man Giant Squid 'S/T' - Yard Act and Parquet Courts off their meds, performing in a Brooklyn basement.
** Biche 'B.I.C.H.E.' - Quirky, analog swagger a la Serge & Broadcast, to facilitate bopping and zoning out in your bohemian parlor. Bonus En Attendant Ana guest
* Miki Berenyi Trio 'Tripla' - Dark yet... bright, genre jumping, dreampop and needing no references as she's pushing beyond her Lush history.
** Yann Tiersen 'Rathlin from a Distance/The Liquid Hour' -Sailing from ambient piano stillness into woozy, synth-laced experimentation. Max Richter takes a detour through Boards of Canada’s dreams.
Been listening to a ton of Molly Tuttle lately, especially her last two albums with Golden Highway. Also been listening to some older Andrew Bird albums.
love this feature! while doing a deep dive for my next WPKN radio show, I'm liking Norwegian avant-garde artist Jenny Hval - new album is "Iris Silver Mist" - coming out next month. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has new stuff, too, with "Gush." And here's a wild thing - Pulp, an alt-pop band from the 90s, is putting out their first album in 24 years!..."Spike Island.." So okay, I'm trying to like "Wet Leg" - and it's been a struggle. I think I'm supposed to like them, so maybe I'm just a contrarian. But their new song "Catch These Fists" is growing on me...
I love Wet Leg! Haha! They are a bit odd. I’m going to have to scroll back a few months worth of texts or message a friend because I’m pretty sure he said something like they may be a band that’s one a record label through together?? I can’t remember exactly what he said
I feel you -- I liked Wet Leg's debut when it came out, but it didn't have much staying power. The new single is ok. I'm rooting for them, but the singles feel a little gimmicky.
Leading up to RSD, I had to seek out the Royel Otis cover of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” - it’s only available to stream on Apple Music, and was released on a 10” with “Sofa King” and “Oysters in My Pocket” - so, of course I did a 2-month trial subscription that I will have to remember to cancel 🤣
I haven’t listened to the whole album, and considered buying it on Record Store Day when I was in a store that had it mixed in with the RSD stuff, but, I knew I could pick it up later! 😂 I’m sure I’ve heard a lot off of it because sometimes my Alexa will just play a lot of Chappell Roan songs after I play “Pink Pony Club.”
I was very busy this weekend, but I did manage to swing by a record store just before closing on the off chance I might still find a copy of Gil Scott-Heron's awesome 'Moving Target' and The Verve's legendary 'Voyager 1,' which were both released for RSD. I am happy to report that, amazingly, I scored the last copy of GSH, and they still had three copies of the Verve LP.
I am not a big RSD guy, but these two releases definitely stood out. I have wanted to score a clean OG of Gil's record for a long time, but it is a tough one to find in the wild. And I have had a CD burn of the Verve release for easily 20+ years now; to finally have it on LP is great (considering originals go for ridiculous money).
Nevertheless, both have been played a lot, as has Eddie Floyd's 'Down To Earth.'
My head is still filled with all the live music I heard this weekend! On Saturday I saw Slippers, Lifeguard, Pachyman, and Clipping at IndiePlaza, the free music festival Rough Trade puts on at Rockefeller Center. On Sunday, my daughter won tickets to see Tamino at Brooklyn Steel. He was truly mesmerizing. If you haven't heard his album Every Dawn's A Mountain, you have some deeply evocative listening ahead of you!
* The Waterboys - Life, Death, and Dennis Hopper. I am a huge fan of The Waterboys' early work to the point where my wife and I snuck up a drive way in Spiddal, a small town on the northwest coast of Ireland, to take photos of the house where Fisherman's Blues was made (apologies to the woman who was sunbathing in the back yard -- we didn't know it was occupied). But I haven't dug Mike Scott's turn over the last decade to this mash of blues, light funk, and loops. So, color me surprised when I gave his new one -- a concept record about Dennis Hopper -- a try and immediately fell in love with its adventurous spirit. Guests include Steve Earle, Fiona Apple, Springsteen, and the guy from Dawes.
* XIXA - XOLO is the new record by the Tucson band led by Brian Lopez, lead guitarist for Calexico, and including the fabulous Winston Watson (Bob Dylan, Chuck Prophet) on drums. Story about it here:
Indeed! You might like the record I released in November -- Destination by Radio Free ABQ. You'll hear plenty of desert influence amidst the jangle rock.
I listened to several thx on YouTube. Mojave Phone Booth should be in a movie! I loved the way the organ came in, and then the voice, and etc. You all are much in the vibe of a couple of AZ bands I can't think of right now, Giant Sand?. Even going back to Pemulis on Placebo Records, a rarity that was the label owner’s brother doing desertdylan. Great stuff thanks!
That's a reasonable choice given Mike's recent output! I think this is one of those times where I was looking for something and didn't realize it and this record fit the bill.
Blondie will always hold up. I have been paying more attention to the drum parts since Clem passed and they really are big part of the Blondie sound. Guess I never really got that before......
One of my 50c cds is Funk Spectrum II and I never listened before it went into a box three years ago. Liner notes sez these guys searched through a warehouse of a million 45s to cull these wonders.
And while the cd might be pricy used, all four volumes are right here on the internet archive. It has been on repeat in store since Friday and continues. Happy happy customers.
Ooh also have been listening to Bob Mould’s Here We Go Crazy in prep for seeing him tomorrow night! It’s a somewhat outdoor venue - an open barn in the middle of nowhere 😂 and it’s going to be cold tomorrow!
OMG it was amazing!!! We went a little late (on time) since it was cold - usually, it’s a place to go early and spend a couple of hours before the show because they have vendors and food trucks. By the time we got there, the first act was playing, and the barn was FULL! With as loud as it was way in the back of the barn, and outside of the barn, I’m glad we weren’t able to get closer 😂
This dude has STAMINA!!! They played like 20+ songs and he was still going as strong for the last song as the first! He doesn’t just stand there and sing and play.
I would definitely go see him again if I get the chance!
Sweet! My best music buddy, who I’m going with, said a previous Bob Mould concert was the loudest one he’s ever been to! Hahaha! My ears may be thankful that it’s not in an enclosed space.
Thanks so much, Kevin, for listening to my song, 'London Girls', and including it in your playlist alongside bands like Blondie! Much appreciated! Love from London, Garlen : )
I fired up my iPod Classic (12,000+ songs) and attached it to a portable speaker (with an AUX cable). It's playing back in alphabetical order the following:
I Got You Babe - Sonny & Cher
I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues - Elton John
I Had a Talk With My Man Last Night - Mitty Collier
I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night - Electric Prunes
I Hate Myself for Loving You - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
I Hear You Knockin' - Dave Edmunds
I Heard Her Call My Name - Lou Reed
I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Creedence Clearwater Revival
I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Gladys Knight and the Pips
I Hope You're Happy Now - Elvis Costello & the Attractions
I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself - Elvis Costello
Just saw that Greg Sage’s 1985 album “Straight Ahead” is back on Spotify etc.
I only learned about this guy and this record when I read Mark Lanegan’s (Screaming Trees) autobiography a few years ago…before he died. A sad but good book. He was soooo open and honest about the desperation of being a heroin addict. 😳
The Name of the Game - ABBA
NEW MUSIC FROM WE ARE SCIENTISTS!!! 🎉
This has clearly overshadowed everything else this week, although I do like the new releases from Honeymoan and Suede (even if 1 hr 19 is far too long!)

Thanks for the link! I saw there was new We are Scientists music and immediately thought of you.
Album out in July and tour starts in two weeks so brace yourself for lots of shouting 😉
I’m here for it! :)

Have a great week of listening.
Jon
Thank you, Jon! I assume all is well with you & yours after yesterday's quake?
Thanks Kevin. I was at Balboa Park working as a tree Steward at the time of the quake, it was a short swayer, epicenter was about 45 miles away.
Panda Bear's Sinister grift--SO GOOD!!!
Oh, that's a new one for me. Thanks for getting it on my radar!
Happy Monday! This morning I decided to spin Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black”. Too early to call it a classic?
What a wasted talent. Makes me sad to think about how much more she could have contributed.
100%
Not too early at all!
It's good, but not quite classic level good yet. Give it a few more years.
To me, it already feels better than many other records which have long been considered classics. My question had more to do with whether it was too early to call it a classic seeing as it’s less than 20 years old.
NEW & SHINY
*** Dead Pioneers 'Po$t American' - Celebrate Liberation Day! Play it loud outside an empty, burning K-Mart. RATM in a Jello mold.
*** Two-Man Giant Squid 'S/T' - Yard Act and Parquet Courts off their meds, performing in a Brooklyn basement.

I very much like Two-Man Giant Squid. It’s a lot of fun.
I slept on the Miki Berenyi Trio release but have just sampled it and it sounds fantastic!
Also didn’t realize that Yann Tiersen had a new release. Look forward to digging into that one.
Tripla just keeps growing on me. I liked it right away, but I'm finding a new favorite part with each spin.
Creep by Radiohead
Air that I breathe by The Hollies
And I blame the film “Heretic”
We watched this last night! I was happy for the music/cycle talk.
It was the highlight of the film, which surprisingly had some rather impressive dialogue and monologues
Yes! That music talk was great!!
Agree, though IMO the film sorta lost its mojo around 2/3 in. Still, great to see Hugh Grant in such a prominent (and unsettling) role!
Agreed. 👍
In case it want to read my thoughts on the film (https://bethlisogorsky.substack.com/p/heretic-2024-review) This discussion motivated me!
Nice! That's like half the reason I come here - either a conversation I'm involved in gives someone an idea for something, or else I get one.
I'm almost embarrassed to ask, but is this in theaters, or streaming?
Also: "Air That I breathe" is now stuck in my head, so there's that. lol. :)
EDIT: Nvm- just saw the link to your page/thoughts. Thanks for sharing that here!
Thx! That song is also stuck in my head. And yes it’s streaming on Max!
Been listening to a ton of Molly Tuttle lately, especially her last two albums with Golden Highway. Also been listening to some older Andrew Bird albums.
The Mekons! Who nu they were still at it? I guess you did!
“Forgotten” songs from 2020. Can these songs be 5 years old already.
Norah Jones, “I’m Alive” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hjv2mxOiej4
EOB, “Shangri-La” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTTyJ4F5rOg
Deep Sea Diver, ”Impossible Weight” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlEu6hfWlQ8
Chicano Batman, “Blank Slate” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC9wLUO0KLk
Nicole Atkins, “Domino” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzbEuGrskso
(Don’t Hate Me), Taylor Swift, “The Last Great American Dynasty” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDTMq6-uYok
Leon Bridges & Khruangbin, “Texas Sun” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRzpTDx9Poc
I think Nicole is very underrated.
Agreed, has not caught the right moment to get mass market attention.
Still can't get enough of the new Deep Sea Diver album.
That's why I'm here. :)
love this feature! while doing a deep dive for my next WPKN radio show, I'm liking Norwegian avant-garde artist Jenny Hval - new album is "Iris Silver Mist" - coming out next month. I never fell in love with Wet Leg. They’re fine but I struggle to get excited. Although I do like Wet Dream very much.
Contrarian is good! FWIW, I like Wet Leg, but in limited doses.
Also: Pulp & Stereolab with new music? Did we...did we fall into a time machine?
Wet Leg's cover of The Chats "Smoko" is worth a listen.
I’ll check it out
Fullerton's MIA.
I'm on it!
I listened to it on repeat all week.

Also, “Casual” by Chappell Roan caught me.
Casual was an early favourite from the album for me. The whole thing is so strong though. I love Coffee and California.
I am the poster child for forgetting to cancel trial subscriptions. lol.
IKR?!?! I’m going to put it on my calendar now!

Voodoo Glow Skulls
Missed getting Vince Guaraldi on record day. First time I've tried to get something in a few years. I don't normally go after anything on record day.
Sorry you missed getting the Guaraldi record! Hopefully, you can get a copy online somewhere?
As for Voodoo Glow Skulls, I haven't heard that name in years!
I thought Record Store Day was this week, so I missed it!
But I was listening to a lot of 10cc this weekend. ‘I’m Mandy, Fly Me’ is a particular favourite.
Love that track!
Oh no! Hopefully, you can still find the record(s) you were hoping to pick up.
Natalie Brooke, an artist out of the D.C. area. I have a show with her Wednesday night so listening to her catalog to get a feel for her sound. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6hAcmilocZp4bKhCEZCO3K?si=Yj6NXQsqQ_SQbhU6NUGFyg
Right on! Hope the show is awesome!
I was very busy this weekend, but I did manage to swing by a record store just before closing on the off chance I might still find a copy of Gil Scott-Heron's awesome 'Moving Target' and The Verve's legendary 'Voyager 1,' which were both released for RSD. Nevertheless, both have been played a lot, as has Eddie Floyd's 'Down To Earth.'
I was surprised to see a couple of copies of The Verve still at the third record store I went to that afternoon.
2 for 2 on RSD! I love it.
I haven't, so thanks for the rec! I'll check the record out here shortly. Slippers and Lifeguard are awesome. I'm sure that was a killer show.
I’ve been loving “Strange As Angels” by Alex Okami; Gabbie included one of the tracks on the playlist she created for you.
Also been revisiting some new releases from earlier in the year:
• All Worlds by Lust For Youth
• Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom by The Delines
• Mary And The Hyenas OST by Billy Nomates
• Late For An Early Grave by Bashful Billy
Bashful Billy and Billy Nomates are among my favourite releases of the year so far.
That was a fun project and she really nailed it. I'm glad you found a new fave on her list!
I've been digging Reuben and the Dark x AG's cover of Shiny Happy People. https://youtu.be/n0Br6744Sl8?feature=shared
Nico Georis - Music Belongs to the Universe
This is a gorgeous record
My week was about:
Story about it here:
https://tucson.com/life-entertainment/local/music/article_e458017a-fdda-11ef-9649-4fb975cf0076.html
* Blondie's greatest hits in honor Clem Burke. Man, their bangers totally hold up!
Looking forward to the playlist and your picks!
Ah, anything Calexico is good groove. I love music from deserts.
Indeed! You might like the record I released in November -- Destination by Radio Free ABQ. You'll hear plenty of desert influence amidst the jangle rock.
https://open.spotify.com/album/76IWYn8aktFrqc2leU4ZAQ?si=J7DghvrnQ4Opyb69lWsjnQ
I listened to several thx on YouTube. Mojave Phone Booth should be in a movie! I loved the way the organ came in, and then the voice, and etc. You all are much in the vibe of a couple of AZ bands I can't think of right now, Giant Sand?. Even going back to Pemulis on Placebo Records, a rarity that was the label owner’s brother doing desertdylan. Great stuff thanks!
Thanks for listening and for the kind words! I don't know Pemulis -- I'll look them up.
I saw that Waterboys record, but initially passed. Silly me. I'll check it out here ASAP!
As for Blondie, I 100% agree.

This looks fantastic. Gonna have to try and get a listen in while I still have the office to myself. :)
Ooh also have been listening to Bob Mould’s Here We Go Crazy in prep for seeing him tomorrow night! It’s a somewhat outdoor venue - an open barn in the middle of nowhere 😂 and it’s going to be cold tomorrow!
Weather aside, I hope it's a killer show. Please keep us posted!
Absolutely!
Right on! I'm happy it was a great show.
Hope it's great! We're seeing him here in Milwaukee on Friday.
Sweet! My best music buddy, who I’m going with, said a previous Bob Mould concert was the loudest one he’s ever been to! Hahaha! My ears may be thankful that it’s not in an enclosed space.
For sure! I've seen Mould many times going back to Husker Du and he's consistently among the loudest acts I've ever seen.
Same here. And up until not too long ago, it wasn't even close.
You are in for a treat!!
I was not able to snag it on RSD but the Frankie and the Witch Fingers Live at KEXP album is great.
The new Lambrini Girls album is bringing the energy I need for this week.
That's my kinda energy!
Saw a commercial for a Kinder Bueno candy bar and liked the song on it. Took me a little bit to identify the song, but I found it.
It turned out to be a 70's disco singer by the name of Claudja Barry and the song is titled "Love for the sake of love", its a nice song.
That's good detective work! I'm not sure I've ever heard the track. Will change that here ASAP.
Since it’s their birthday weeks, both Al Green (https://open.substack.com/pub/themixtape/p/celebrating-al-green?r=huy28&utm_medium=ios) and Lowell George.
For Lowell, specifically ‘Feats Don’t Fail Me Now’ the deluxe edition with plenty of fantastic demos, outtakes, and live cuts.
I’m also leaning into the swamp rock with CC Adcock’s 2004 album, ‘Lafayette Marquis’—dirty, muddy, and off-kilter.
A day late but here are the songs I wrote about today: https://danpal.substack.com/p/new-music-from-miley-lizzo-night?r=lru5s
Right on! Thanks for sharing the link here.
I’m listening to Masayoshi Takanaka so much rn
Good playlist Kevin. I listened to Supertramp, Breakfast in America. And a whole lot more:https://weatheredmusic.ca
Thanks for the link! For anyone scrolling the comments, Norman scored a box of 100 records, and there are some real gems in there.
Thanks so much, Kevin, for listening to my song, 'London Girls', and including it in your playlist alongside bands like Blondie! Much appreciated! Love from London, Garlen : )
Of course! Thanks for letting me share it with everyone.
I Just Don't think I'll Get Over You - Colin Hay
I Just Don't Understand - Ann-Margaret
I Just Don't Understand - The Beatles
I Just Don't Understand - Spoon
I Just Want to Celebrate - Rare Earth
I Just Want to Have Something To Do - The Ramones
Beats doomscrollling.
This is fantastic! I'd love to find my iPod and see if it even still works.
