Hello and welcome to each of you that joined us over the weekend! It’s great to have you here!
This week’s playlist is some of what I played the most this past week. It’s admittedly all over the map-even by my normal standards—but it was that kind of week. I’d love to know if you find something new!
What’ve you been playing? Got a song, record, or podcast we all need to hear? A new release your excited about? Share it below!
Ashley McBryde’s Lindeville. Named in honor of Dennis Linde, who wrote “Burning Love” and The Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl” (now that’s versatility), it is the product of a pandemic enforced songwriters retreat that brought a small fictional town of colorful characters to life.
I’m not a fan of much of what’s out there in the current country music lane, but McBryde’s first two albums reminded me of early Kacey Musgraves as well as Jessi Colter, so I decided to give it a shot. Having grown up in the South, I feel like I knew/know of many of the characters in Lindeville. It’s a lot of fun.
True Colors by Split Enz, Woodface by Crowded House, and a lot of Eskimo (Electric) Cowboy ever since learning of them (better late than never) last week.
The Alvvays record is definitely the constant rotation and I love seeing which songs people are picking from it - "Belinda Says" is a damn fine choice! You know I'm a huge fan of WOD's "Oceans of Darkness" and with Big Star, you're speaking my language this week!
Not To Touch The Earth by The Doors has become one of my favorite songs for this Halloween season. It's something slightly haunting about it but it's still an excellent song on its own too.
“Cherub Rock” by The Smashing Pumpkins. My husband randomly turned it on and boy is that a good track. Love it.
From there, we started listening to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I love “Tonight, Tonight” of course, but really enjoy the music video. It’s a take on George Méliès’s A Trip to the Moon (1902).
I’ve got a bit obsessed this week with a bizarre covers album called ‘Strange as Angels’.
It’s an album with Chrystabell (a long term David Lynch collaborator, and an FBI agent in Twin Peaks!) singing Cure songs, accompanied by Marc Collin (the Nouvelle Vague guy).
What’s not to like about that!
My favourite track though is ‘One Hundred Years’, if only for the pleasure of hearing my favourite ever Robert Smith opening lyric, “it doesn’t matter if we all die,” sung in a torch song style.
(Remember, there’s more ‘discordant stuff’ like this in the best music themed novel you’re ever going to read, at https://challenge69.substack.com )
Love Robert Glasper. Haven’t gotten into Ahmad just yet but a friend recommended him. I play Vince every Christmas. 🙂
This is a new one for me; adding it to the list to spin here shortly!
Bopping my head to "Children" by Robert Miles

Excellent choice! Perfect for writing under deadline.

I'm on it! This sounds right up my alley-especially if it sounds like Kacey Musgraves and Jessi Colter.
Came across this just now. Nothing revelatory here, but a nice read/look inside the record.

Had "True Colors" on earlier this week as well!

Great minds think alike! :)
Seriously, "Blue Rev" is everything I thought it might be and more.

I'd never heard it! The song is a little unsettling to be sure.

Greta picks! I didn't know that about the video.
Richie Weeks - The Love Magician "Just Cuz I can't Dance (Don't Mean I Don't Know How to Party)" - Truer words have never been spoken.
Indeed! Sounds like me in my earlier years.
