Happy Monday, and welcome to those of you who joined us over the weekend! It’s good to have you here. This week’s playlist is a bit of what I’ve had in heavy rotation recently. Let me know if you find something new on here!
More importantly, what’ve you had on? Got something we should all be checking out? A new release you’re excited about? Share it below!
Working through the final edits/rewrites for the next chapter of my novel Kevin, https://challenge69.substack.com - which this time includes a playlist of ‘Lost Singles ’78 to ‘82’
if my Twitter & IG timelines are anything to go by, it seems like a lot of people were doing the same thing! Tons of people stoked for Tom DeLonge to be back.
Just began a short section of my Writing About Music class at St. John’s U in Queens, NY, on the Ramones. “Soft” intro: “Rockaway Beach,” Sheena is a Punk Rocker.” Then a “Surfin’ Bird” battle between Ramones and Trashmen, followed by “Papa-Ooh-Mow-Mow” by the Rivingtons. In my best mock academic voice, I riffed on the “ornate, baroque” doo-wop of the Rivingtons, and how “Surfin’ Bird” distills the song to its essence.
Very excited for the new Arctic Monkeys album dropping Friday so their latest singles have been played basically daily lol. "Body Paint" is my favorite of the two.
Another new one for me! Just cued it up, and am a minute(ish) into "For Ingrid."
Been vibing to RHCP's new album Return of the Dream Canteen

Same, but also utterly failing at convincing my family Anthony Kiedis is a beat poet at heart.
He totally is, though!

In my world these would have all been hits!
Listening to it, they should've been!
Ha! it was a Blink 182 week here in casa del Gilby. Old Blink, new Blink all kinds of Blink LOL.

Digging The Waterboys When Ye Go Away off of Fisherman Blues... and the album as a whole. Brilliant!

If I lived in NYC, I definitely would audit your class.
Save me a seat!
(logs off, starts looking for tickets)

"There'd Better Be a Mirrorball" is getting a lot of airtime in my house.
On the turntable this week: Wire's Pink Flag and Ray Charles' What I Got. Someone needs to combine these two sounds.
Both of those are fantastic!
