A group of music writers & fans from Medium have a standing Album of the Month discussion. I was (finally!) able to make one this past week, and a point was raised regarding the rise of “bland” music. The person saying it was trying to couch it within the framework of the imitation, evolution, innovation adage.
This wasn’t an old man yells at cloud rant so much as it was a lament.
He had a point. The last real birth of a genre might’ve been hip hop, which is now 50, but that doesn’t mean innovation isn’t happening. It’s just more a reimagination than an invention. I’ll also note w/o irony that the person making the comment was wearing a Wu-Tang Clan shirt. A group whose debut turns 30 this coming Monday.
