About ten years ago, I found myself in a small out-of-the-way bar in St. Martin and got to talking with the guy seated next to me. Over the course of a few hours (and more than a few drinks), we talked about everything under the sun. Up until a few years ago, he had done everything you were supposed to do; he’d gone to all the right schools, had a job as a lawyer that paid extremely well, and bought the requisite McMansion in a tony Houston suburb—all of it.

He was also profoundly unhappy.

So, one day, he decided to change course. He quit his job, sold the house—and almost everything he owned— and bought a boat (“not too big, or anything. Just enough to for the ocean”).
