Post-election, I can't tell if the dust is settling or if this is just the quiet before the storm. What I do know for sure is that America is as fractured as ever. Partly lines, state lines— whatever delineator you want to use—we’re a balkanized nation fueled by grievance merchants, avoidable collisions, and tribal identity. Thanksgiving’s shaping up to be wild this year.
It’s a lot.
But there are times when worlds collide in the best ways, and tribal identity is a badge to wear proudly. For me, November 16th, 2024 is that day.
Autumn is taking it's sweet ass time, making it's way up to fly over country. I’m still wearing shorts at work. The trees seem in no hurry to shed their leaves or even turn colors. Sure, there are a few bright reds and oranges here and there, but by and large, it’s just not happening yet. Today, however, Madison is about to be awash in colors of a different sort. There’ll be green and gold everywhere, and not just on trees.
