Welcome to another edition of For The Record, a good old-fashioned link drop and benefit for paid supporters of On Repeat. If you’re ready to become one, we’d be thrilled to have you!
As a reminder, On Repeat is 100% reader-funded. And as always, there are 7-day trials for anyone looking to test the waters.
This week, we’ve got news on BTS, The Grateful Dead, Denton Texas, Lou Reed, and The Replacements.
All of that and a LOT more (like, a lot lot).
Let’s get right into it!
There are a lot of things people never see at the airport.
While they’re in the terminal looking for their gate to the nearest Starbucks, there is all kinds of activity buzzing beneath them. As they board, they might hear a thump-thump-thump sound. That’s literally people beneath their loading luggage and cargo.
They also might not realize that those holds are full of graffiti.
Most of it aligns with what you might see on the outside of a railcar. Some of it is simply the idle thoughts of someone waiting for the next round of freight to arrive planeside. There is also, of course, a bit of political stuff (“F*ck Trump” is almost always followed by “F*ck Brandon” or vice versa).
Some of it is just people putting their name (literally) on the wall, hoping for a dash of recognition amongst a closed group of people and/or wanting to transcend the anonymity of working out of sight.
Once in a while, someone takes it to the next level. For years, I would see Jimi Hendrix’s "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace" quote. It was everywhere: always in that same uniform block script and always in the same spot. I’ve never seen it written over.
