Welcome to another edition of For The Record, a semi-regular good ol’ fashioned link drop, and benefit for paid supporters of On Repeat. If you’d like to join us, we’d be thrilled to have you!
This week, we’ve got rap from Milwaukie, furniture sales from Bakersfield, and (possible) chaos in the Bahamas.
All of that and a lot more! Let’s get right into it.
I’ve been thinking a lot about time lately—not in a navel-gazing sense or some woo-woo metaphysical way about how fast it goes (obvs), but rather how blocks of time now feel almost like seasons.
I’ve mentioned before that I now work with people who were born after I was hired. The people who were here when I first walked on the property have, by and large, either retired or passed away (or both). No matter what lens you look at it through, it’s a different world. It’s still exciting enough to get me out of bed every day, but it’s hard not to feel like a guy still at a party after all your friends have gone home.
(big sigh)
This week, I wrote up a record turning 35, with an almost as old story about skiing. Inspired by the release of Sonic Youth’s recording of their last concert (12 years ago!), I went looking to see when I’d seen them last. Turns out the first time was 33 years ago this week. I texted one of the guys I went with, and he replied with *fuuuuuuuck*. The nice thing about having a friendship span so many years is that you can compress a 500-word response into a single epithet.
We both knew what he was saying.
