This is great, but what are the odds that you and I would publish an article on the same day that both discuss Peter Gabriel's departure from Genesis? Too weird. Great stuff, Kevin.
Yes - an amazing book. It was incredibly in-depth for a book that truly covers a good swath of his life. He seemed more humble and willing to look at his selfish behaviors than in anything else I've read of him.
I love the part about hanging out with Eric Clapton (I think) in a local pub. That said, his drinking nearly killed him several times. I assume it has also contributed to his current state.
Hit me up if you're interested in collaborating on something in the future. Brad suggested something I write something about old-school punk over at Front Row & Backstage, and it turned out to be really fun.
Yes, no doubt it's a very solid song. The bass line and Tony's keyboard are unique for a song of that era. The album and song are very well produced as to sound quality. (Unlike Brothers In Arms but that's another story). People get all worked up about the Gabriel Genesis albums or the Phil Collins ones. I choose to accept them both what they are: very good music of different styles.
Glad to see a general consensus that we're all Phil Phans around here! Genesis, Peter Gabriel & Phil Collins solo, Mike and the Mechanics, gimme it all! Especially love Mike's guitar on this song.
The 'Serious Hits... Live!' album was a BMG staple in my house growing up. It's a fine record, but this summer, I finally watched the Berlin show it's recorded from, and it's such a fun time capsule. I'm sure some of you will enjoy all two hours and forty minutes of it!
I remember this song! I must have had the tape. Back then I thought it was so cool that a drummer was also the lead singer. I didn’t get into Phil collins’ solo stuff as much - it was too ballad-y.
I just saw Steve Hackett perform in San Sebastien, Spain!! I was late to the party, but I got hooked on early Genesis when I lived in Basque Country! I heard their very first album “From Genesis to Revelations” on Spain’s Radio 3 station! It was a game changer for me. I may have to write more about it!! Stay tuned!!
Survey submitted.
Same here!
Thank you both!
Great piece, and thanks for unearthing this song! Who doesn’t love a deep album cut.
What you said about Phil Collins making a difficult song sound easy is so true. Bang on the money. It takes a lot of talent to do that!

Great minds think alike!

Love Genesis. Particularly Phil Collins' Genesis. His autobiography is a must read. Crazy life.

Adding it to my TBR list!
The shapes album also fits in the “late career self-titled reboot” category. This is a great one.
That is a great topic for an article. Have you written one or read one that delves into this?
Good point! Have you guys covered any other Genesis (or Phil Collins) besides "Duke?"

Dang, I just wrote about identity today, and Genesis (the band) would have been an amazing case study.
Good subject for a future post! :)

Ha, this video is great, and high quality, thanks! Might watch the whole thing...
Who needs the Grateful Dead when Phil is playing 2.5 hour shows back in the early 90s? 😆
Thanks for this!

Great piece. Time to listen to the Genesis album again - nice to see a reminder that there’s much more to ‘pop Genesis’ than is recognised.
I’m writing about Selling England next week. That album got me started with buying everything Genesis ever did.
Please share a link here when you do!
Thank you. Will do!
I never knew that Phil Collins started as Genesis' drummer. Mind blown. Great read.
That's why I'm here! :)
I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm on it!
