Good Morning!
Today we’re listening to “We Got The Power” by Gorillaz
It’s Friday, so we’re going with something a little lighter today.
For a virtual band1, Gorillaz sure know how to make a song for every mood/emotion. Want to hit the dance floor? They’ve got you covered.
Feeling wistful? Same.
Want a banger with thundering rhythm that makes even the stock stereo in an ‘07 Outback sound good? Here ya go.
And in the hellscape that 2022 often is, sometimes you just want to hear a feel good track. Not just literally, like this dopamine hit, but in a broader sense. Something airy & hopeful all at once.
In a world where almost everything feels out of our control, a track like “We Got the Power” is a good reminder that we can fix things. We just have to want to.
Have a great weekend. See you Monday!

‘Humanz’ features guests at all stages in their careers, from reggae’s man of the moment Popcaan to gospel legend Mavis Staples. Albarn’s explained that each contributor was asked the same question: “Imagine a night where everything that you believed in was turned on its head. How would you feel?” Regardless of the answer, the resulting collaborations had to convey “pain, joy, and urgency” – and they do.

No one does it like the Gorillaz
I think I never 'got' the Gorillaz. But now that you are sharing them (again, I think?) I looked a bit at what they were about. Of course I listened to this song, and that left me with two thoughts:
1) it's a fun tune, and completely different than the other song I knew of them;
2) you are right: we have to power to make our communities kinder and better.
Thanks for reminding us with this lovely song.
