In some ways, Soccer Mommy’s latest record Sometimes, Forever feels like a love story told out of order. The first track “Bones,” reads like a dispatch from the crash investigation of a relationship. The literal first words we hear on the record are:
I feel the bones of how we used to be
They crowd the space between us in our sheets
I wanna scream when you don't look at me
Like you did, oh, back then
A few tracks later, lead single “Shotgun” plays out like a crush hitting critical mass, with Allison pleading:
So whenever you want me I'll be around
I'm a bullet in a shotgun waiting to sound
Whenever you want me I'll be around
I'm a bullet in a shotgun waiting to sound
Oh, yeah
Lyrically, Sometimes, Forever makes us feel all the things. Along the course of the record, there are highs and lows. Excitement and world-weariness. Open space and the claustrophobia that comes with such intensity. From the desperate hope of “Shotgun,” to the harrowing “Still,” and everything in between.
