Good Morning!
Today we’re listening to “Night Moves” by Lissie
Lissie Maurus is a singer/songwriter from Iowa perfomring as Lissie. Her style has been described as everything from pop to rock to folk.
And they all fit.
The best descriptor I’ve heard for her “Night Moves” track is that it’s the best Stevie Nicks song not by Stevie Nicks. Press play, and you won’t be able to unhear it.
Speaking of pop, Maurus also makes “indie pop”… as in popcorn. The project was born out of an idea she and friend Diane Ott Whealy had during the pandemic1.
“I always had this kind of cheeky idea, like, I want to have like a pop music-themed popcorn and call it indie pop, because I kind of do indie pop. There’d be cheesy pop and folk pop and synth pop and dream pop. Every flavor would be a kind of pop music.
“And she (Ott) said she always wanted to sell her caramel corn. And we had all this time on our hands because of the pandemic.”
Another pandemic project was her Carving Canyons album. Recorded in the fallout of a breakup in early 2020, you’d think some of the themes (loneliness, isolation, etc.) might seem a little dated. They’re not.
Nor is “Night Moves” derivative, no matter how much it feels like it could be on the A-side of Bella Donna.
Grab some popcorn, and give it a spin.

More:
Night moves is, again, clearly influenced by Fleetwood Mac’s nocturnal pop… Will we ever be tired of their sound? Not now, not ever. Perhaps the best chorus out of the twelve, it’s impossible not to feel like screaming this song on the top of one’s lungs. While Chasing the Sun gave the idea of trying to see the light in life, looking for it even during the worst times, Night moves is more about being peacefully in the dark.

I'm sure she's her own artist, but golly, she sounds so much like Stevie, I'm stunned she even THOUGHT about attempting a cover of "Go Your Own Way" (completely devoid of irony, as it turns out!!!).
In fact, so disinterested Lissie (apparently) seems in shedding any pretenses or people's perceptions of the comparison, I hear she's recently begun cheating on Lindsey! Can an album titled "Rumourz" or "Task" be far behind?😉
Loved it! Yes so Stevie Nick's but also Lissie is herself, her own style too, Great find!
