Good morning!
Today we’re listening to “Speeding 72” by Momma
One of the downsides to living in a small(ish) town is a total lack of radio stations. Most are automated, and play a lot of the same songs over and over.
If you want to hear Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”and canned commentary, you’re in luck. If you’ve had your fill, you’re S.O.L.
That said, one of the upsides to living here is that it’s also a college town. And that means college radio. Yes, good radio hosted by real people in (more or less) real time.
“Red Planet” is one such show. Running on Sundays afternoons, the host touts it as an “indie nouvelle variety show.”
And it is.
I listen to it on the way home from work, and always manage to find something good on the playlist. It’s music discovery the old fashioned way.
And that’s how I found this track.

“…this is a summer record, and it’s a road trip record. It’s a record to listen to in the car with your friends; it just felt really warm and inviting and fun,”
~Allegra Weingarten
Listening to this in 2022, you’d be excused for thinking it was a new Breeders’ single or even Veruca Salt—the band is a fan of both. If you listen close, you’ll even hear a nod to Pavement.
More:
Embedded in the texture of these songs is a nostalgia for a cooler time in music — when social media didn’t exist, vinyl records were the main way of listening to albums, and rockstars were… an actual thing. “This is a world that doesn’t exist anymore,” Weingarten says. “It’s not in our reality as a band, but also as listeners of music, it’s just not something we’re probably ever going to experience. But there’s a little glimmer of… but what if? What if this record could do that? What if it did go #1?”

Was not expecting to like this much, as it's not a genre a typically enjoy, but what a great and fun song! I'll be on the lookout for the album in July, thanks for introducing me to them!
This is right up my street, thanks for sharing.
