Most people will remember March 24th, 1989 as the date the Exxon Valdez ran aground. I remember walking to the closest shopping mall to get tickets to see New Order.
That was the closest Ticketmaster outlet, and I was probably halfway down the street before my mom had even finished giving me permission. With the benefit of hindsight — and now being a parent myself — I now know what a huge leap of faith this must’ve been for her. We lived in the suburbs, and she was giving the green light to an (almost) 14 yr. old to ride the bus across the metro area to see a band she heard nonstop but didn’t know.
I suppose on some level you just know when to let your kids leap.
New Order is one of my all-time favorite bands, and The Perfect Kiss is my favorite song of theirs. I’ve written about them before, and likely will again.
If I’m honest, there is a greater-than-zero chance that this newsletter will someday devolve into a fan page for the band.
I have no idea how many times I’ve listened to this song, but it honestly has to be in the 1000’s at this point. I burned through at least 2–3 copies of Substance, the compilation album it appeared on (it originally appeared on 1985’s Low Life). Later, copies of the CD stayed in my player for weeks at a time. Now it lives on multiple playlists of mine.

What do you think about this record? Are you as big of New Order fan as I am? Is that even possible? When/where’d you first hear it? I’d love to find out!
Thanks for being here,

i love how short these pieces are! just enough to make me really want to look into their discography myself. i do longer-form music writing over at record store if you want to check it out!
Great song 👏 I should definitely take a look to New Order's discography. Don't know why I know and admire only their iconic "Blue Monday", and "Age of Consent" 🧐. There's so much for me to catch up and I'm turbo excited for it. Thanks Kevin!
