There's another great reference in the lyric quote you pulled. "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is perhaps Neil Young (and Crazy Horse)'s greatest album, containing as it does "Cinnamon Girl", "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Down By The River". Ms. Nelson is clearly a student of the classics.

Thanks CJ! Every time I think I've found all the references, winks, and nods, I learn I missed a bunch.

Excellent review! For me, this is the best of the year, so far (and last year as well, maybe).

Still have to give the album (another) chance but I will say that Nelson is SO GOOD on Twitter that it almost makes me angry. I'm, like, DAMN, how does she do that?? Her full-length reviews are good, too, but she has truly mastered the short form.

Excellent work, Kevin. We posted about the album on the same day.

Thank you! Yours was great as well.

"Last Night in Chickentown” is a rollicking number that you could imagine playing over the opening of a movie about some small-time crooks who are looking to make a big score." is a line I wished I'd have written. Dead on accurate.

Definitely clever songwriting, both lyrically and musically. But is it too clever by half? I might still have this one on rotation in 2-3 months time or I might not, we’ll see. (Though I do love Bad Day for the Group Chat.)

Time'll tell! I wonder about that every time they release a record, only to realize I'm playing them semi-regularly months later.
