So funny to think of Squeeze as an acquired taste, as I’ve always found those strangers to be exceptionally sweet. The sort of dessert only a Grinch could pinch their nose at. Argybargy and East Side Story are masterclasses in pop-song smarts and stellar musicianship, and Cool For Cats just a neck behind those two. Sweets From a Stranger, I agree, doesn’t match up to those three, but I do have a soft-spot for it (and didn’t know the band in-fighting at the time) as well as for Cosi Fan Fruiti Tutti. One of the worst album titles ever. Their “reunion” albums of the mid 2010s are a lot better than they had any right to be.
This gives me the perfect opportunity to trot out my usual Squeeze story!
We had tickets to see the band at the (sadly lamented) Limit Club in Sheffield in November '79, but their tour bus (prob just a van at that stage) got massively delayed by fog on the motorway. Squeeze agreed, if the club could stay open, they would still play whatever time they arrived. With the prospect of a continually open bar nobody seemed to leave, so by the time the band took to the stage (around 1am from memory) they were enthusiastically greeted by a 'well oiled' audience. Squeeze were brilliant that night, at least I think they were!!
This is probably the latest I've ever seen a band, although that might be challenged by New Order, although on that occasion it was due to overindulgence by a band member who shall remain nameless (OK, it was Bernard!) ... but that's another story.

Nice to "meet" in the chat today, BTW. Nothing like finally getting to speak about something you're excited about and totally tripping over your own words. Oof.
I’m definitely partial to the more new wave-y stuff (specifically “Goodbye Girl”) but “Black Coffee in Bed” is an ace track.
When I realized it'd been in my head for over a day, I took it as a sign to include it here.
Black Coffee In Bed definitely a favorite song when I was in college, like — the year it came it out LOL...Thanks for this!
That's why I'm here! :)
Bringing back memories of my high school days!
Always happy to take a trip down memory lane! It may or may not sound really good on the speakers at my desk. :)
I’ll have to hang out more often, especially when the groovy tunes are playing! 😀

The song sounds so familiar, but I think this was actually completely new to me!
Nice! I'm glad I could add something good here. :)

I love it!
"No milk and sugar!" was Mr. C's greatest contribution to this song, I believe.
Haha. Yes!
