Sometimes we hear the cover version of a song, and then go years before hearing — or even knowing about — the original. So it was with this track.
I first heard this when the Goo Goo Dolls covered the song for their Hold Me Up album. They also remade a Prince hit on the album, but that’s a post for another day.
The Plimsouls were a southern California band that first formed in 1978. The group quickly became a favorite around Los Angeles and released an EP in 1980.
I started drifting to a different place
I realized I was falling off the face of the world
And there was nothing left to bring me back
First released in 1982 on the band’s own Shaky City record label, it was featured in the movie Valley Girl (with the band even making a brief appearance in the film).
The song was included on their LP Everywhere at Once, re-released as a single, and peaked at #82 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
I was a million miles away
A million miles away
I’m just a million miles away
And there’s nothing to bring me back today
Bring me back today, bring me back today
