I can vouch for how soulless the VC crowd is. Before I went back to grad school, I programmed and designed educational software for small companies, two of which were startups that sought VC funding. But here's a fun story from those days.

Around 2000, I worked at a small startup that produced an early challenger to Blackboard for high schools. A VC group with educational expertise visited our office as they considered investing in us. Our CEO brought Ernie, the lead guy, around to meet everyone. I was also introduced as our token long-haired musician -- I guess that was supposed to give us some cool points.

Ernie was thrilled to hear that I am a musician and mentioned that his son Trey plays guitar and has a band. And then I remembered Ernie's last name....Anastasio. "Wait, you're Trey Anastasio's dad?!"

"Oh, you've heard of him!" He was genuinely delighted as if Trey were in some unknown local band. He was a lovely guy and seemed to be in the business for the right reasons. Ernie and his wife were part of the early Sesame Street scene and Ernie of Bert & Ernie was rumored to be named for him.

Great read as always. My husband and I have a property development and investment business. Labour of love, nothing like VC level, but we're proud of it. When we check out a potential property to buy, we always, without fail, make sure the area has soul. A quirky little cafe where locals congregate. A run down pub where you know the beer tastes better and the hugs are warmer. A tiny little bookshop with more books than walls. Tenants love living in areas that have soul. It's good for our business, good for our tenants, good for the community... it's a win-win all around. Far from me to lecture investors more experienced and with deeper pockets than me. But I only wish they could see beyond the spreadsheet because honestly, we've had better returns and happier tenants in areas that live and breathe a life of their own. Happy weekend!
