The ways we discover and create music continue to evolve. Matthew Vanderkwaak's new project is shining a light on both his own music and other emergent Canadian artists.
This is wonderful. For decades I and my husband enjoyed folk (ish) Canadian music each summer over a range of small festivals, almost all of which (in Ontario) seem to have disappeared or morphed into showcasing different musical styles which don't appeal. I have racks of CDs bought at those festivals. Some of these artists I know (Fred Eaglesmith!) and some are new.
Okay. We've got to talk. Pulling this playlist together was a lesson in how much I do NOT know about Canadian folk music. This one focuses on music from the past few years, but I want to start working another that gathers up the great Canadian songs from the 60s-90s. Send me some names!
I’ll go peruse my CD collection. If I don't get back to you in a day or two, please remind me. Off the top of my head: Stan Rogers, Garnet Rogers, tanglefoot, kate and Anna McGarrigle, Sylvia Tyson, Ian Tyson, but those are the big names. I'll take a look for some lesser known acts.
Thank you! I was really happy to cross paths with Matthew and get a chance to share his work.
As for the sticker, I got it from someone on here. Wish I could remember who, so I could give them credit. But they did tell us all to feel free to use it, so please feel free to grab it for LP if you’d like!
It's an honour to be featured at "the nicest place on the internet". Thanks for being such a gracious host, Kevin! It's lovely to meet you all.
It’s an honor to have you!
Fascinating stuff (as a Canadian, I naturally approve of this).
Thanks, David! Gotta love that special home grown Canadian approval.

Wonderful!
I've made a real effort to share music I love this week. Thanks, Kevin.
I know very little about Canadian music outside the main hits we all know, but such a cool initiative!
Thanks for reading, Andres. Gotta love the hits too! Sometimes I forget that Avril Lavigne is Canadian, and when I remember, I always smile. :)
Yes indeed! And Alanis, and Bryan, and Sarah, and Shania, and so many others!
This is a terrific initiative. Plus the ‘human intelligence’ sticker is great. All of us actual human writers should use something similar.

I looked it up. Seems the idea is to design your own (makes sense!) so here’s mine:
