For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation. This week, I’ve got an earworm from Rhode Island, a couple of great tracks from the Twin Cities, an old favorite from the East Bay, and a whole lot more!
Now it’s your turn.
What caught your ear this week? Any 2025 releases or shows you’re excited about?
Before you go: As most of you have seen, I am a huge fan of music the streaming platform Qobuz. The sound quality is second to none, and the entire UX is fantastic. Thanks to our friend Kenn Richards, you can now see it for yourself.
I’m thrilled to share this exclusive offer for 2 free months. Not an ad, and there’s no catch. Just hella good sound quality, solid recommendations tailored to your tastes, and editorials well worth your time.
Note: The codes will be sent out by an actual human over the next several days. Please be patient.
Hozier came up on Bluesky, and I mentioned that for the longest, he didn't really land w/me. But one of my coworkers is a massive fan, and made a compelling case. I'm all in now.
Hahahaha!! Yeah, I loved Take Me to Church when it came out, but didn’t seek out more from him. He just really hit me with Too Sweet, so I dug in and got a bit hooked. I picked up a used vinyl of his first album (s/t) and I’m really digging it and have listened to it quite a few times over the past week or two.
I've no way of telling how much, if any, of this is new, but some months now I've been listening to Sleep Frequency Playlists, etc.
These past of couple of years I've had some health issues and these have really helped to chill me the fudge out, especially during bed time.
I have one of those sports wrapped around head bands with a Bluetooth ear piece embedded, that allows me to do any nocturnal twisting and turning without fear of my ear buds dropping out or being uncomfortable.
My broken sleep and anxieties have seen a great improvement.
I understand the business reasons why Garth Brooks has kept his music off of platforms like Spotify. But it means that a couple of generations of people aren't all that familiar with his music. Not just the hits, but the weird experiments. Like his alternative Chris Gaines personality. I mean, the hair is insanely awkward, but this Babyface-produced single "Lost In You" is just great. And Childish Gambino did a really faithful cover of it a few years back https://youtu.be/tCPYt6BYOSI?si=q-fIXMsJkaS4RVrf
** Shapes Like People 'Ticking Haze' - Lush, jangle, dream pop gem from lead singer/guitarist of The Shop Windows.
** Fust 'Big Ugly' - This is one is really growing on me with trust listens.
* Lust For Youth + Croatian Armor 'Friendzone' - Hypnotically cool, electronic soundscapes and loops.
* Vundabar 'Surgery and Pleasure' - Post math psych rock?! Whatever you want to call it, I call it worth a few spins.
* Hamilton Leithauser 'This Side Of The Island' - He's great but I dream of new material from the Walkmen...
* The Tubs 'Cotton Crown' - Nice, though I'll need another few listens to better appreciate progression.
* Jethro Tull 'Curious Ruminant' - Maybe one more listen but desire solid musicianship it still sounds... tired. Think I'll listen to Aqualung instead.
When you figure that out let me know as it may be the same place I found them. I thought it was foraging on Bandcamp feed but not certain. Regardless, that album is tremendous!
I haven't yet heard the Lady Gaga record, but will get after it! Just a quick listen to Isbell's, and now I need to sit down with it for a closer listen.
Memory project has me diving into 1991 this week. This is the year I discovered Nirvana ("discovered" is being very generous here- MTV forced them down my throat, but it was a huge moment). I want to figure out how exactly I went from the Beatles to punk rock, mainly.
Happy Monday! Currently punishing myself on a beach vacation with my funk playlist. “Dance With Me” by Rose Royce currently blasting through my airpods.
My week's listening was about cleaning up my Spotify "check out" playlist which had become a digital version of a hoarder's house. Some new-to-me records I dug from that process:
• Daniel Lanois - Rockets. I have nearly everything Lanois has released or produced, but I missed this one. It's a 2004 collection of unreleased demos, live and rehearsal tracks, and leftovers originally intended to be sold at his shows. There's a casual, homespun quality to it that I like, and anything with Brian Blade on drums is worth listening to.
• Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid. A former bandmate loves Elbow and occasionally reminds me to check them out. I like this record, but don't love it. Going to keep moving through their catalog.
• Woods - City Sun Eater in the River of Light. Anyone know this band's work? There's something I really like about this record that I can't put quite put my finger on. I need to spend more time with it.
Looking forward to the playlist and your recommendations. Cheers!
I just listened to The Seldom Seen Kid too. I'm definitely a fan of the band and will finally see them live in October. Hope you find more to like in their catalog!
Great that you'll see them soon! I'm looking forward to digging in more. I really liked Guy's solo record when it came out. (I just looked -- I can't believe it's been ten years already.)
girl in red - I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! This was nominated in the same category as Aurora's "What Happened to the Heart?" in the 2024 Spellemann awards (Alternative pop). There are some good moments on this record, particularly the opening track (I'm Back) and A Night to Remember, and the lyrics are good. However, there are some filler tracks, and the ending to "Phantom Pain" makes me go "huh?" Her vocal delivery isn't quite as clean as, say, Aurora or her other compatriots, which turns me off a bit.
Some really great albums released on Friday. Perhaps unsurprisingly, my pick of the bunch is Drive to Golden Hammer by Divorce but Mill On The Hill by Melin Melyn is also excellent. I’m enjoying Vundabar and Sofy’s new releases too. Currently undecided about Hot Wax. It feels a bit hit and miss to me.
Here’s my pick of what’s been released so far this month
I picked up a nice looking/playing copy of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Viva Terlingua" at the record store on Saturday. Never understood why it's called "Viva Terlingua" when it was recorded in Luckenbach. Those are two completely different parts of Texas.
I think the new Jason Isbell is going to require sitting down and really listening to it a couple times to form an opinion. I picked it up as well on Saturday and had it on, but it was while I was doing stuff and not really paying attention.
Today it's been Nick Garbett & Mike Majkowski's The Glider, from 2021. It channels the Men with the Horn--i.e. Miles Davis and Herb Alpert--in equal measure, and then Jon Hassell twice as much as that. Fourth World with a boomerang and dub bass. Awesome!
Friday it was Boston post metal act Tides, and their only album, Resurface--had just gotten my physical copy. If you think Isis would have been better without the vocals, Tides--what there is of them--are your band.
Thursday was Tom Waits' Beautiful Maladies. I think it's poor taste for Island to say these are "the Island years," don't you agree? That type of talk is for critics and fans, not for labels, not even somewhat progressive ones.
I have been watching the documentary 'Summer of Soul.' What a great film. Was there a better live band in 1969 than Sly and the Family Stone? And wow, the Fifth Dimension kicked ass.
Thriftskor: Thorr's Hammer. Winter after Kurt's death in Seattle. 17yo Norwegian foreign exchange student w local dudes. 6 weeks 6 gigs 1 recording session 1 album. She goes back to Norway.
Most played. Konono No.1 ~ Congotronics
"Features 3 electric likembes, megaphones, hand-made microphones and percussion built from old car parts." Informed by native trance traditions and amplified for the city.
Thanks for the Horsegirl reccs, ya'all.
Current Retail: Eighteenth Street Lounge Soundtracks ~ Jet Society (compilation)
Most played retail: CSNY ~ So Far. A wartime comfort to us olds.
We sell Kalimbas and often I hear customers plinking. If anyone ever starts playing along with in-store music, I will give them 50% off. Hasn't happened yet.
Er... Scott Mackenzie's (version of) 'If You Are Going To San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in your Hair)' moved me this week. Not much else. Quite liked some Substackers' work. But passion generally absent from my week. I'll maybe listen to some of the recommendations here, thanks 🙂
I was at a convenience store the other day, and they had it tuned to my old college radio station. Out of nowhere, I heard this gem from Phoenix, "Trying To Be Cool," which I hadn't heard in probably 10 years after it was in my regular rotation in the early 2010s:
I've been listening to Joey Valence & Brae's "No Hands"; it's some real fun rap that reminds me of Beastie Boys. The whole album is just a romp of fun (and the word booty for some reason???) It's just two guys being silly and sometimes that's all you need in life: https://listen.tidal.com/album/362603601
The new Jason Isbell and I’ve been going back on Hurray for the Riff Raff after enjoying The Past is Still Alive…I’m going through the back catalogue to catch up on what I’ve missed
I’ve been geeking out about Qobuz and Roon right now. I’ve been getting back into Dovetail Joint’s 001 and checking out their 2024 release Keep the Vultures Fed
This is my kinda rabbit hole!
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! - ABBA
Such a good one!
Today began with Colin Hay, followed by Minor Threat. Then came Fight, Rush, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson and Iron Maiden.
I enjoy his whimsy. He is one of those artists I can’t listen to without feeling happy.
What a ride! I love this kind of mix. IMO, Colin Hay is terribly underated.
Haha. Today so far has been Ramones, Metallica, 2Pac, AC/DC, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Sabbath…
Shoot… I just got the theme song from “Bonanza.” lol
This week I’ve been stuck listening on repeat:
Noah Kahan’s Dial Drunk and Stick Season.
Hozier’s Work Song, Someone New, and Too Sweet.
Lola Young’s Messy.
Gigi Perez’ Sailor Song.
Going to California, Covered – One of my fav. Zep song. I like all the covers, but the Heart and Sly and Robbie versions are the best of the lot.
Heart, “Going’ to California” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwlH9FLK590 (Starts at 1:19)
John Paul Jones and Paul Gilbert, “Going to California” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8WpL5eHFkM
The Brothers Comatose, “Going to California” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zgmlx08HIR4
Black Crow and Slash, “Going to California” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHZiqjgjRAM
Sly and Robbie, “Going to California” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOtZdwWXd0k
Fuel, Going to California” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcQ8IdLnLdY
great list thanks
Missed that Sly & Robbie album - now I’m eager to check it out!
Same!
I've been listening to the new Bob Mould as well!
My top 3 albums in rotation last week:
Bob Mould - Here We Go Crazy
Tom Waits - Bone Machine
Melvins w/ Jello Biafra - Never Breathe What You Can't See
I've no way of telling how much, if any, of this is new, but some months now I've been listening to Sleep Frequency Playlists, etc.

This was one of those experiments where if you tried to explain it, people might just look at like you were speaking Latin.
NEW & SHINY:

* Jethro Tull 'Curious Ruminant' - Maybe one more listen but desire solid musicianship it still sounds... tired. Think I'll listen to Aqualung instead.
Pleasantly surprised by how much I’m enjoying Vundabar. It’s a great album.
I concur - had never heard of them and now feel compelled to listen to their back catalogue.
The Shapes Like People album is quite beautiful
I am ALL IN on Fust, and tbh, did not see it coming. I need to go back and see who/where I first saew this record. I owe them a big thank you.
When you figure that out let me know as it may be the same place I found them. I thought it was foraging on Bandcamp feed but not certain. Regardless, that album is tremendous!
It's been an interesting new music weekend, alternating Gaga and Isbell. Have enjoyed both for very different reasons.
I haven't yet heard the Lady Gaga record, but will get after it! Just a quick listen to Isbell's, and now I need to sit down with it for a closer listen.

Great picks as always Jon! Thanks for these!
Will Stratton - Points of Origin.
I haven't heard that one yet. I'm on it!
It’s fantastic!
Memory project has me diving into 1991 this week. This is the year I discovered Nirvana ("discovered" is being very generous here- MTV forced them down my throat, but it was a huge moment). I want to figure out how exactly I went from the Beatles to punk rock, mainly.
I think one could make the case that 1991 was the best year ever for music.
Strong argument in favor begins with "Groove is in the Heart" and ends with Nirvana's Nevermind.
This was a killer year for me in music. Very, very important stuff.
Cruisin’ by Smokey Robinson
“Before you Go” by Lewis Capaldi
Crusin' is the perfect groove!
Smokey Robinson was on the broken Record podcast not too long ago; it's pretty good if you're interested.

Happy Monday! Currently punishing myself on a beach vacation with my funk playlist. “Dance With Me” by Rose Royce currently blasting through my airpods.
Lol. The beach is always such sweet torture.
Perhaps my favorite Bowie album, 1997's Earthling.
Dwight Yoakam's latest Brighter Days.
Greg Kihn Band's Kihntagious from 84'.
Great call -- Earthling is so underrated! I'm digging Dwight's new one, too. We're seeing him with The Mavericks in a couple weeks.
I'm not sure I've ever heard Earthlings! I'll need to change that ASAP.
My week's listening was about cleaning up my Spotify "check out" playlist which had become a digital version of a hoarder's house. Some new-to-me records I dug from that process:

Great that you'll see them soon! I'm looking forward to digging in more. I really liked Guy's solo record when it came out. (I just looked -- I can't believe it's been ten years already.)
2015 being only 10 years ago definitely feels like time is tricking us, doesn't it?
I too am flabbergasted that is been ten years! I'll possibly be seeing them when they come to NYC.
Listening / watching the Led Zeppelin documentary / art film The Song Remains the Same. Have you seen it? It's fucking nuts.
20 times in the theater in my youts. It was in regular rotation like Rocky Horror, Let There Be Rock, The Wall.
I haven't! Fucking nuts in a good/rock n roll way?
What platform are you watching it on?
Nuts in "these guys were tripping major balls" way. Good concert footage intermixed with weird fictional scenes with no context.
It's on Prime for another few days.
New this week:
girl in red - I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! This was nominated in the same category as Aurora's "What Happened to the Heart?" in the 2024 Spellemann awards (Alternative pop). This version of Labour by Paris Paloma from the Late Show with Stephen Colbert has also been on heavy rotation: https://youtu.be/4hyaYHqUSiY?si=03xnW57EpPTvyhaw
I didn't do any revisits this past week.

Should add, really enjoyed the Field Hospitals track on your playlist. Like very early REM!
Right on! I'm happy to hear it. Early REM sound for sure.
Thanks for this, Lou! Cueing it up as I type this. I really like that Tune Adibimpe track!
It’s a sit and ponder piece, that’s for sure. Some powerful stuff there, as per usual for Isbell.
I mentioned it upthread, but I'm in the same boat as you with the new Isbell record. I've only done a quick pass through so far.
Awesome!

They sure did!
For anyone scrolling the comments, if you haven't seen Summer of Soul, it is 110% worth your time!
Hey Kev. Sorry it's been a while! Here's my playlist this week https://open.substack.com/pub/recentanddecent/p/recent-and-decent-63?r=1z6rnh&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true I don't think I've listened to any of your songs, which is perfect!
Welcome back and thanks for the link! Hopefully, there's something on this week's list you'll enjoy.

Congotronics is a great record! Haven't thought of it in a while, thanks for the reminder.

504 Plan. DC punk from some righteous high schoolers!
Sounds right up my alley!
Hopefully, you'll find something you enjoy! Lots of great stuff to root thtrough this week.
Thank you Kevin. There is. I have found something fun!
I was at a convenience store the other day, and they had it tuned to my old college radio station. Out of nowhere, I heard this gem from Phoenix, "Trying To Be Cool," which I hadn't heard in probably 10 years after it was in my regular rotation in the early 2010s:
https://youtu.be/LXBUnNWeqzc?si=zNCBUBy_HKEu9MFI
It hasn't left my brain since, like being reunited with an old friend.
Times like that (and Phoenix) are a gift. What a great song, too!
It was a big new music bonanza last Friday - Bob Mould, Jason Isbell, Hamilton Leithauser, Fust, Benmont Tench, and The Tubs all got play.
I also spent time listening to the albums in...you guessed it, my latest post: https://shooflypie.substack.com/p/5x5s?r=4iw9
A couple of points, if I may:
First, thanks for the link! Lotta great records hitting milestones. I know I say it a lot, but man, time is screaming by...
Second, I think Fust is gonna be on a lot of AOTY lists come year's end.
Lastly, can we talk about what a great series AV Undercover was?
I'm 2 spins into the Fust and it's pretty darn good. I would not be surprised if your prediction comes true.
And yes to AV Undercover, especially those first few seasons.

I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying Qobuz!!
