Happy Monday, and hello to all who joined us over the weekend! It’s great to have you here with us. Thanks also to everyone who commented, emailed, or had a kind word to say about On Repeat turning 2. It truly means a lot to me!
The playlist below is some of what I’ve been playing this week. I dunno what happened this past month, but there were a TON of killer releases, so if you’ve got one (or some), please share ‘em!
Now it’s your turn.
What caught your ear this week? Find anything good while crate digging? Is there an upcoming release or show you’re excited for?
I was kinda wondering that too. I've listened to the record a bazillion times, so I thought I knew every note. Clearly, I did not. Some of them were what I've always "known," but some of them really came alive on the screen.
haha thanks, kevin! i checked it out yesterday and it was sold out too! which i think is a good thing since morally, i really try not to buy vinyl from amazon and try to support a record vendor instead. helps me sleep at night lol
I was having a discussion with someone over the weekend about the darkest song to be a hit single. I love 90s country and there were a lot of surprisingly deep hits over the decade. But Martina McBride's "Concrete Angel" wins hands down.
"Bearing the burden of a secret storm/sometimes she wishes she was never born"
The amazing thing is the song was a massive country hit. It topped out at #4, which is pretty amazing for such a brutal story. And yeah, the video is hard to watch.
I'm going to dive in to my review of the documentary "Kelce" on Prime -1/2 of the famous football duo known as the Kelce bros and "New Heights" podcast stars. With all the TS-TK relationship buzz, all eyes are on the Kelces.
A lot of people on my TLs are losing their minds over TS/TK, and all the footage of her at the games, but I think it's fun. And if it doesn't work out, I'm sure we'll get a great record out of it!
Too true. I was listening to a song from “Guts” this morning by Olivia Rodrigo called “Get Him Back” that has a few lyrics that I think could work in the event of a TS-TK breakup.
I have also been enjoying the new Slaughter Beach, Dog 🤘🤘
Fall on the banks of the Ohio River means two things for me - foggy mornings and folk music. I've been listening to a lot of Gillian Welch & David Rawlings this week. It still amazes me how I can listen to I Dream A Highway on repeat for hours and not get tired of it. 11 verses and 14 minutes of pure 🤯
Here is one for all the fans of Slowdive, a song I discovered a few years ago that I thought might just be Slowdive using a different band name but it's not. Ozeon only recorded a few songs and played probably even less shows but I wish they had released more. They released 3 songs on an EP whichbis almost impossible to find but thankfully I recently heard that the Numero Group were planning to reissue them -
Anytime I suddenly discover a band that has been around for awhile, I feel like a goof. But this weekend, I discovered an AMAZING rockabilly band from Switzerland called The Hillbilly Moon Explosion. It's a great discography and one album has particularly entranced me: it's a collaboration with Mark "Sparky" Phillips (from Demented Are Go!) called "The Sparky Sessions" and it is amazing.
Happy Monday, Kevin and fellow On Repeaters! Lots of early/mid nineties pop and R&B. Bedtime Stories and Erotica by Madonna were on heavy rotation on the turntable this weekend. This morning, a lesser known title, from this side of the pond: What Silence Knows by Shara Nelson.
On the way to Milwaukee last night, we found a station playing early 90s R & B, and my wife learned that I know the words to a lot of songs from that era. Not sure she was too thrilled to hear me "prove" that, but...
Shara Nelson's a new one for me; I'll check that out later today!
Still working my way through The Replacements' Tim box and am digging into Jason Isbell's 10th anniversary release of "Southeastern." Two of my favorite albums with a refresh is a great thing. Alternating those with "Stop Making Sense" and several of the bands I've seen/photographed live this month. September was truly intense for music.
Good point! I hadn't thought of that. The theater around a possible shutdown is always stop of mind for me, since it could (possibly) have an outsized impact on my job.
I could've written that same sentence about Wilco. The end of the first song annoys me for no real reason, but the back half of the record is solid-the closing track in particular.
I'm relatively confident that "Lemon Lights" is going to be on my AOTY short list come December. It's just gets better & better.
Thanks for the Ngoda rec! That's a new one for me, and if you and Mark are both endorsing it, it's gotta be good.
Just discovered (courtesy of our great alternative radio station '6 Music') a really good new Irish (London based) indie band called The Clockworks, debut album out in November produced by Bernard Butler. I'd recommend checking them out on Spotify
A lot of my listening last week was driven by the podcast I published earlier today (https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/SmT3utrSzDb), just working my way through the playlist and gaming out how to edit each piece/song. But I did find time to listen to new releases from Pachyman (great), Wilco (very good), Olivia Chaney (gorgeous), with perhaps the most exciting being the new single from Katie Dey (https://open.spotify.com/track/5i2P2HKxQWnW0Fs9RHROJb?si=e4eccf133b5748f6), which manages to combine a big pop feel with some rather outre production techniques. She's just great!
And I did some crate digging over the weekend at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair, scoring first pressings of Let It Bleed, Live Peace In Toronto, Gaucho, and Planet Waves!
King Crimson on one end of the week and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on the other end of the week with this in-between if you have the time or inclination to read more: https://weatheredmusic.ca
Oh yeah, that McSweeney’s article hit VERY close to home. I’ve actually been toying with the idea of starting a Sad Dad Rock Substack. Even if I can’t get it off the ground, Wilco will love me, baby!
I’m really enjoying the new Wilco album Cousin. This band in my opinion truly can do no harm. With songs as beautiful as Ten Dead Jeff Tweedy keeps raising the bar on just how beautiful lyrics can get in a Pop song. I know it sounds cliche but my heart does break listening to him sing. He owns every part of the beauty that’s created when he reaches deep down and that sound flows out.
It also amazes me how Jeff inspires the rest of the band to do their absolute best work, as always Nels is just stellar but what really got me was how I felt Glen was so invested. The Drums on Cousin are so good and seem to take the hand of the song and lead it where to go. It’s beautiful. That’s my rant and thanks for listening to me (or not) I do not post on here a bunch but there is A LOT of what I consider to be good music heading our way (new Mountain Goats - Jason Isbell 10th Anniversary Southeastern - new Big Theif - Superchunk Misfits & Mistakes singles b sides strays and others) so I figured I would spew my opinions not to hurt anyone one else’s feelings that may differ from mine but please feel free to share any and all opinions but can we please not be hurtful about it ? Isn’t music supposed to spread joy ?
Rants about music are always welcome. And really, this was more of a rave. :)
Opinions and hot takes are always welcome.
As for Cousin, the first half of the record hasn't quite landed with me yet, but IMO, the closing track makes a good case for why so many people feel as strongly about the band as they do.
The last couple of weeks I've been very into Seablite's "Lemon Lights" record. If you liked Lush, or are a fan of jangle pop, you'll like this. Also, the new remix of The Replacement's Tim. It's fantastic. The Chemical Brother's "For That Beautiful Feeling" will definitely get you moving. Not new by any stretch, but I've been listening to The Church's "The Blurred Crusade" quite a bit as well.
I enjoyed Lush very much so I will look into Seablite . The Replacements Tim . I have been waiting so long for a proper mix of this record and I’m so happy it’s finally here.
My hot take on Cousin, after 1.5 listens, is that Cate Le Bon reminded the band why they are musicians and brought some inspiration that’s been lacking on Wilco’s last few albums. I need to give it some more spins, but as of now I think this is their best album since Star Wars.
Oh yes yes well said Marcus - I do believe Cate has brought Wilco together and recorded them in a unique way that has breathed some new life into some of the arrangements of Wilco’s songs. Great insight.
Amen!
Cosmic Psychos
I’m taking hours off today to see Stop Making Sense ... can’t wait!
Saw it last week and was wondering how it would hold up, despite the great reviews. It's really terrific.
I was kinda wondering that too. I've listened to the record a bazillion times, so I thought I knew every note. Clearly, I did not. Some of them were what I've always "known," but some of them really came alive on the screen.
Got my ticket for Thursday. Been waiting months for this and I'm beyond excited. Glad to been hearing that it lives up to the hype!
IMO, it totally lives up to it. Looking forward to hearing what you think!
Saw it last night and the soundtrack has been on repeat ALL DAY. Who has a hot lead on how I can get the deluxe vinyl? It’s sold out in most places!
Good question! I just went to look, and out of about 10 sites, the only place that *might* have it is Amazon.
haha thanks, kevin! i checked it out yesterday and it was sold out too! which i think is a good thing since morally, i really try not to buy vinyl from amazon and try to support a record vendor instead. helps me sleep at night lol
It was amazing to say the least
Right? I'm happy to hear you liked it!

Oh, this is great! Good vibe for getting some writing done this morning.
Last Friday was like Christmas morning! New albums from Wilco, Seablite, Melenas and Blonde Redhead. It was a busy weekend!
This Seablite record! Whew. It gets better with each listen.
I can’t stop playing Pot of Boiling Water! I just want to keep it on a loop.
And the video is just brutal - if you ignore the Martina McBride appearances https://youtu.be/KtNYA4pAGjI?si=k1dq63qrsNsngziE
Damn. That was a gut punch. McBride's voice is beautiful (as always), but I'm pretty sure I'd be good never seeing the video again.
The amazing thing is the song was a massive country hit. It topped out at #4, which is pretty amazing for such a brutal story. And yeah, the video is hard to watch.

More Squeeze. Squeeze is officially my fall obsession this year I guess. Last year, it was The Band!
Lol. Nothing wrong with that! Any particular record of theirs this week, or just a bit of everything?
I have also been enjoying the new Slaughter Beach, Dog 🤘🤘
Fall on the banks of the Ohio River means two things for me - foggy mornings and folk music. I've been listening to a lot of Gillian Welch & David Rawlings this week. It still amazes me how I can listen to I Dream A Highway on repeat for hours and not get tired of it. 11 verses and 14 minutes of pure 🤯
I love it! I'm not sure I'm ready for fall (and winter right behind it), but foggy mornings are good.
How about some psych pop by The Crystal Teardrop, a band I just discovered recently - https://thecrystalteardrop.bandcamp.com/track/by-the-river
I'll take it!
Here is one for all the fans of Slowdive, a song I discovered a few years ago that I thought might just be Slowdive using a different band name but it's not. Another new one for me. Thank you Wally!

Lol. Nothing like singing to the radio while driving!
If you know “Blue Lines” by Massive Attack, you will have heard Shara sing lead vocals on a couple of tracks.
Oh, and "King of America" was a great choice for this week's playlist, especially given all of the will we/won't we around the possible shutdown.
Good point! I hadn't thought of that. The theater around a possible shutdown is always stop of mind for me, since it could (possibly) have an outsized impact on my job.
Intense and overwhelming, but in all the best ways! Tbh, I haven't played the Tim CDs yet; I can't get past the album tracks.
I saw Assaisans last weekend and now Gun Song is in my most played playlist.
https://open.spotify.com/track/575QeCEV2ms1F8fJKyyk67?si=91caf39c065541ca
Oh, this is good!
Right? I was peripherally aware of Assasians but hadn't seen it. Quite glad I did, for this song alone.
Faith No More: Everything's Ruined at the moment!
Hell yeah. "Angel Dust" is one of those records, I forget about for awhile, find it again, and then immediately wonder why I stopped listening to it.
and, this gem: https://www.pandora.com/artist/venom-metal/in-nomine-satanas-deluxe-edition-2019-remaster/AL6qVxJlb3ff2wZ
Definitely U2's new single "Atomic City!"
I haven't heard it yet! Sure read a lot about it, though.
I'm bouncing around today. Started with some Glenn Gould and then some indie radio.
Perfect! Indie radio's where it's at!
Greetings All. Wonderful playlist & great recs all around - thanks!
Spent some time this week listening to:
Jalen Ngoda's 'Come Around and Love Me'. If you enjoy Marvin Gaye don't miss it.
Wilco's 'Cousin'... jury still out though I preferred side 2.
Jim Jones All Stars 'Ain't No Peril' - get up and shake it! Think Black Keys & Dr John but... smokier?
Seablite's 'Lemon Lights'. Sparkly, pop goodness.
That Jalen Ngoda album is fantastic isn’t it?!
Gorgeous and what a voice - so sweet. Plus it will more than tide me over until next Kiwanuku album as well.
I could've written that same sentence about Wilco. The end of the first song annoys me for no real reason, but the back half of the record is solid-the closing track in particular.

Thanks for the Ngoda rec! That's a new one for me, and if you and Mark are both endorsing it, it's gotta be good.
Had new Wilco out this past Friday. Sampled a couple of songs last night and I'm excited to hear more.
I mentioned above, but overall, I liked it- definitely prefer the back half of the record.
Just discovered (courtesy of our great alternative radio station '6 Music') a really good new Irish (London based) indie band called The Clockworks, debut album out in November produced by Bernard Butler. I'd recommend checking them out on Spotify
Will do! Great to see you here, btw. What's next for you project-wise?
Willie NElson's Bluegrass, and more Tyler Childers
Nice!
This Moment - Shakti
XMAS EVET10 - Aphex Twin
Love Song- Freda Wood
That's my kinda mix!

And I did some crate digging over the weekend at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair, scoring first pressings of Let It Bleed, Live Peace In Toronto, Gaucho, and Planet Waves!
Whoa. Looks like I've been going to the wrong record fairs. Nice pickups!
Really liked the Katie Dey; thanks for getting it on my radar! I have the podcast in my queue, planning to listen to it tomorrow at work.
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins HITS & RARITIES, COW PIES &, AT LAST
The Velvet Underground Live at the Matrix box
Always a good choice.
King Crimson on one end of the week and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on the other end of the week with this in-between if you have the time or inclination to read more: https://weatheredmusic.ca
Great read! I play everything I come across at least once as well, even if it's bound for the donation pile.
It’s a Sad Dad bonanza right now! The National’s Laugh Track last week and Wilco’s Cousin this week.
Lol. Still one of the best articles ever: https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/what-your-favorite-sad-dad-band-says-about-you
Oh yeah, that McSweeney’s article hit VERY close to home. I’ve actually been toying with the idea of starting a Sad Dad Rock Substack. Even if I can’t get it off the ground, Wilco will love me, baby!
Haha. That would be awesome!
Charles Wesley Godwin's new album. Heavy AOTY contender
Been enjoying the new releases from Blonde Redhead and Cherry Glazerr but spent much of the weekend listening to Roosevelt’s Embrace
I'll have to check these out!
Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts...
Last night was the first time I've listened to more than a snippet of one of her new songs, and I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised!
The new Romy album (from The XX)!
hey bailey! thanks for tuning me in on the new Romy Release!! loving it now!
YES!
this is what Ive been listening to!
https://spotify.link/TplFliZKADb
I dont listen to so much music, these are what piqued my earholes last month 😊
Thanks for the link! There's some great stuff on there.
Thank you sir!! It makes me want to discover more tunes!
I watched "Baby Driver" with the gf on Sunday, and while it was a great heist movie, it's soundtrack was fantastic.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7K6fXVLjVW8APEysOnTVbw?si=320141321e8c4988
Holy shit. How...how have I never seen this before?!
It was my first time too. It's on Netflix. Definitely give it a watch.
I had that soundtrack on repeat for six months after seeing the movie. Need to revisit it.
Great flick! And as an old-school photographer, I thought it was a hoot that Arthur Elgort's son had become an actor.
On my yearly ritual listening to the radio plays of "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy". What a treat!
I love it!
