For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing. New year, new us? Not a chance. lol.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation.
Now it’s your turn.
What caught your ear this week? Any 2025 releases or shows you’re excited about?
Thanks to your playlist last week, still loving/binging Brief Candles, echodrone, and Exploding Flowers. But mainly what's on repeat here is on your playlist this week - Horsegirl. That album is just phenomenal. Can't wait to see them in March.
Nice! Thanks for the link. I've been thinking a lot about Fishbone and Faith No More's early 90s appearances and what I might want to write about them.
-- Oddly -- https://oddlyband.bandcamp.com/album/swerve. I mentioned this last week but the full record came out Friday, and this band from Kyoto really delivers a punch hovering between punk and shoegaze.
Only 'found' it yesterday - James McMurtry's 'The Horses and the Hounds' (released 2021). OMG - what a brilliant album (been on permanent loop since)- superb melody and arrangements with lyrics to die for (though I guess if your dad was/is Larry McMurtry you'd hope for some apples to fall there). E.g. (from 'Canola Fields')
I heard you switched coasts, moved in with your sister
I doubt you'd have called it familial bliss
We met up in Brooklyn before it went hipster
You carried your keys in your fist
In a way back corner of a cross-town bus
New works just (re)released:
- House of All - 'House of All Souls' - Mark E. Smith's denizens find solace in community
- The Delines - 'Mr Luck and Ms Doom' - the usual melancholia from Willy and co.
- The Black Dog - 'Further Vexations' (originally from 2009 but just been remastered at Abbey Road - and boy, does it show)
LOVE the Mollusk and it actually ended up having an effect on the music of SpongeBob; there was actually a great video essay on it if you're curious: https://youtu.be/p9w-VTOvPjI?si=1q6yPPJLl_w-VzT1
I know the album. Red Joystick and I Love You Suzanne are good songs . . .though the image of Lou "dancing" in the video is kinda an "ick" moment for me :)
*** Solas 'Adwaith' - Eclectic in the best possible ways! Electro... rock... pop... Turkish style influences... w/ old Celtic lyrics!? It's cool as f#@k and on the AOTY shortlist.
*** John Glacier 'Like A Ribbon' - Swampy, glitchy, lo-fi production w/ booming bass. The sort of dense, hypnotic experimental hip-hop I adore. Heavy rotation!
*** Sharon Van Etten and the Attachment Theory 'S/T' - Fabulous record with eighties synth influence. Can't stop playing this one either. AOTY list taking shape.
* Horsegirl 'Phonetics On And On' - Amazing production by Cate LeBon reminds me of The Modern Lovers, though I'm no expert. The 1st trk is reminiscent of Roadrunner.
* Cymande 'Renascence' - After 31 yrs they're back, delivering the same amazing soulful funk.
Heartworms is fabulous. I need to get on that album. Thank you. Not totally sold on the Horsegirl album yet. At the moment it’s half fantastic, half meh. Needs a bit more listening, I think. I saw The Wombats play last night. It was a great performance showcasing lots from the new album. I like it a lot more than I expected to tbh.
I hope folks give the Solas album a listen and sample through; it's do much more than the first few tracks represent though I know the Celtic lyrics make it a challenge... anywho.
Digging this Heartworms record so far (and it gets the all-important Lou Tilsley thumbs up as well!). Also, thanks for the heads up on the Solas record. I lost track of them because a little Celtic trad goes a long way with me, so I'm interested to hear their updated sound.
I like the Adwaith record. I was totally confused as I saw Solas and assumed it was the Irish group, and I thought it was quite the departure. ;-) I just realized Solas is the name of the record!
No worries! I'm glad to have found the record and the mixup made me laugh once I realized it. I forgot to mention in my previous reply that Solas was just here two days ago, which made them even more front of mind.
This has been such a good week for new releases. Firstly, I am shouting very loudly about this brilliant debut release from my friends Woman Wept. The single, Short Change, really is excellent.
I went to see their launch show on Saturday and it was such a great night. Please have a listen.
Elsewhere, I’m really enjoying the new singles from Luvcat and Japanese Breakfast and I love the album Late For An Early Grave by Bashful Billy. It’s hard to ignore how derivative it is of The Smiths but I love it nonetheless!
• Wilco - A Ghost Is Born reissue. I enjoy the alternate versions of Spotify and would love to hear everything in the Super Deluxe Version, but that is a hefty price tag!
• City & Colour's last two records. They are my co-producer's favorite band and I've never quite gotten into them. I played the last two records on a quiet winter's night and they clicked. Looking forward to spending more time with them.
• Miles Davis - Kind of Blue. I listened on repeat while watching 8" of snow fall through our living room picture window, the most peaceful moment I've had in months.
I dug The Jellybricks song on last week's playlist and discovered a small world connection. Geoff Sanoff is a close friend of a close friend that I've hung out with a few times. He was in the DC-based band Edsel (and is on the Fugazi documentary trailer) and now runs Little Steven's studio in Greenwich Village. He produced The Jellybricks' last record!
Looking forward to the playlist. Have a great week, everyone.
I'm still debating on A Ghost is Born as well. I have the "Yankee" deluxe, which is great, and the liner notes are almost worth the price of admission. Unfortunately, the price probably will not come down much.
Totally agree on the YHF box and liner notes. I'm a little less interested in the story of AGIB since Jeff's struggles during it have been written about extensively, but I'd love to hear all of the experimental stuff leading up to the final product.
Dave, funny you mention Geoff Sanoff as he produced the last Dot Dash album and played keyboard on some of the songs. I must check out the Jellybricks as well.
Kevin, I've jumped over to 1989. There's Bad English, Taylor Dayne, Bobby Brown, and then stuff like Will to Power (Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird medley) and When in Rome sprinkled in. I am reliving my trauma, one song at a time!
One day last year, my youngest son started playing When in Rome “The Promise” - he’s 13. I was like “where did you hear this song?? This is my music from high school!” Apparently it was on a Fortnite soundtrack 😂
Creepy Nuts, a hip-hop duo from Japan with a goofy name, came out with their new album LEGION that I've been listening to endlessly this past week: https://tidal.com/album/414689004?u
Otherwise, a loooooot of Dave Brubeck; I recently found an album of his that is his impressions of Japan and I love it! https://tidal.com/album/1867681?u
I’m researching the influence of Pino Palladino’s fretless bass in the 80s and I think I’ve inadvertently found a new mini genre: new jack adult contemporary. So trying to track all the down examples of people like Peabo Bryson, Celine Dion, Al Jarreau, etc doing songs that have new Jack swing production
I was in Southern California and Mexico last week for work, so I was in the mood for some Herb Albert and the Tijuana brass, Santana, and Tribe of Gypsies.
Great playlist with some favorites in there like Yo LA Tengo, Pere Ubu and Armoires and even seen Pere Ubu around the time of that album.
Just received a copy of the reissue of The Mighty Wah! "Songs of Strength & Heartbreak" an album that was overlooked by many at the time but had many excellent songs on it - here is one of them -
I’ve been loving “Raymon Ayala” by Giovannie and the Hired guns, who will be playing at a super cool place in Iowa City next month - trying to find another friend to go with! Same with Dexter & The Moonrocks - they are playing at a bar in Iowa City the week before. I wish I had an expendable income! I wouldn’t hesitate to go to both!
Really, I’m having trouble not obsessively listening to Not Like Us and TV Off since the superbowl halftime show 🤣
I’ve been listening to a bunch of reggae from the late 60s and early 70s. I just started reading “Pressure Drop: Reggae in the 70s” by John Masouri (highly recommended!!) which is turning me on to some fantastic tunes.
I’ve started a playlist of artists/songs discussed in the book. After reading the Introduction and Chapter 1 (of 10) I’m already at close to 50 tracks totaling 2 1/2 hours. It’s shaping up to be an excellent playlist.
Genesis - Foxtrot. Prior to listening to this, my exposure with Genesis was limited to the Phil Collins era, which, while good, straddles out of the realm of prog rock, especially with their self-titled album and their subsequent albums. Foxtrot is solidly in the other era, where the band was led by Peter Gabriel. The vocals seem strikingly similar, and with interesting lyrical themes (particularly with the song "Get 'Em Out By Friday" which seems very relevant today) it's a must listen.
Shaboozey - Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going. This was quite catchy - although there are a few missteps. The most notable one being track 10 - it didn't fit so well with the rest of the album. But the rest of the album makes up for it, for the most part.
Just got home from brunch at Easy Street Records in West Seattle where I bought the Free to Be You and Me record! So excited to listen to it! I had the record as a kid.
Been spinning Fever 333's Darker White. Dropped months ago but only realised the whole record was out last week. Politically charged rap punk side project from the Letlive frontman!
Have been doing a deep dive into Rammstein's music and came across another good one called "Zwitter" nice fast and heavy sound. Controversial as per usual with this band lol.
Bob Marley dominated the playlist this week. However, there were a few other choice bits. The long read is here if you are interested. https://weatheredmusic.ca
Thank you! I really appreciate that. :)
As noted this morning in The Riff (!), I'm listening to Rafael Berrío and Amor A Traición.
If you don't know about Kevin's Medium publication, you should check it out.

For anyone scrolling the comments, this is/was a great read!
Thank you, Kevin. I appreciate it!
Kneecap.
That's a new one for me. I'm on it!
There’s a movie on Netflix for the full context. Highly recommended.

Thanks to your playlist last week, still loving/binging Brief Candles, echodrone, and Exploding Flowers. But mainly what's on repeat here is on your playlist this week - Horsegirl. That album is just phenomenal. Can't wait to see them in March.
Right on! I'm glad you liked those tracks. I've been obsessed with Horsegirl too; I like how economical it all sounds compared to their last one.
One of the 6OGs posted a Top 16 SNL performances - https://3albums6oldguys.substack.com/p/6ogs-special-our-sweet-16-of-snl - so I've been enjoying those, esp The 'Mats, the Pogues, and the Elvis Costello
Nice! Thanks for the link. I've been thinking a lot about Fishbone and Faith No More's early 90s appearances and what I might want to write about them.
Other new stuff I'm enjoying:
-- Pale Lips - https://palelips.bandcamp.com/album/after-dark. New to me but from 2019, which I found thanks to this phenomenal Bandcamp feature on Montreal garage rock that has a ton of great stuff in it- https://daily.bandcamp.com/scene-report/montreal-garage-rock-scene-report
-- Caroline Rose - https://carolinerosemusic.bandcamp.com/album/year-of-the-slug. Album covers so much ground and has some just stunningly great songs.
-- Oddly -- https://oddlyband.bandcamp.com/album/swerve. I mentioned this last week but the full record came out Friday, and this band from Kyoto really delivers a punch hovering between punk and shoegaze.
-- Dead Gowns -- https://deadgowns.bandcamp.com/album/its-summer-i-love-you-and-im-surrounded-by-snow. Thanks to @JeremyShatan/AnEarful, enjoying this singer from Portland, ME. As Jeremy put it in his post, "High lonesome ballads and high-powered guitar epics fuel a scorching debut." https://anearful.substack.com/p/a-song-for-friday-dead-gowns
The Caroline Rose album is great. It's been on my playlist since Day 1.
Enjoying the sound of Oddly
Ain't no Sunshine - Bill Withers
Down on the Street, The Stooges. That driving bass line. I have to believe that Deep Purple borrowed some stuff from this for Space Truckin'.

- The Delines - 'Mr Luck and Ms Doom' - the usual melancholia from Willy and co.
- The Black Dog - 'Further Vexations' (originally from 2009 but just been remastered at Abbey Road - and boy, does it show)
Add everything you can to your playlist by McMurtry. When it comes to fine writing, the apple didn't fall far at all.
Done - can’t believe I’ve lived this long without him in my life!!
(takes down both names to add to playlists after work)
I’ve seen him 10-12 times. Full band and solo. Some of the best solo shows I’ve witnessed.
AMAZING. I’ll just hope he ventures eastwards to Europe or the UK - otherwise I’ll have to come stateside for another vac!!
Here's the link to his live shows. This is reliable going forward as well: https://www.highroadtouring.com/artists/james-mcmurtry/itinerary/
I was stuck in the 90's all week:
Ween - The Mollusk
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Fishbone - Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe
LOVE the Mollusk and it actually ended up having an effect on the music of SpongeBob; there was actually a great video essay on it if you're curious: https://youtu.be/p9w-VTOvPjI?si=1q6yPPJLl_w-VzT1
Thanks, Ryan! Will definitely check this out later!
Sugar Kane might be one of SY's most underrated songs.
Totally agree. It’s right up there with my favorite Sonic Youth songs.
Dirty is full of great underrated gems. Chapel Hill is bonkers good…Purr and Wish Fulfillment too
Exploring Lou Reed a bit last week.
Lou Reed, “Underneath the Bottle” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZRmKn7c42U
Lou Reed, “The Blue Mask” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQu1M3iGj-Y
Liz Phair, “Hey Lou” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4LcFHMjH9k
Matthew Sweet & Suzanna Hoffs, “Sunday Morning” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6nRQbqGxms
Saul Williams and John Cale, “Heroin” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCVof_DihgE
Honorable mention to "Magic and Loss" and "Viscious"
I know you didn't ask, but New Sensations is worth checking out. Might be a hot take, but IMO, it's one of his best records.
I know the album. Red Joystick and I Love You Suzanne are good songs . . .though the image of Lou "dancing" in the video is kinda an "ick" moment for me :)
here a little ditty for your monday mornin

NEW & SHINY:
*** Solas 'Adwaith' - Eclectic in the best possible ways! Electro... rock... pop... Turkish style influences... w/ old Celtic lyrics!? It's cool as f#@k and on the AOTY shortlist.
*** John Glacier 'Like A Ribbon' - Swampy, glitchy, lo-fi production w/ booming bass. The sort of dense, hypnotic experimental hip-hop I adore. Heavy rotation!

* Cymande 'Renascence' - After 31 yrs they're back, delivering the same amazing soulful funk.
* Heartworms 'Glutton For Punishment' - Gothic punk? Siouxsie / Berlin.
* The Wombats 'Oh! The Ocean' - Slick production, genre jumping, HQ pop rock.
I like it a lot more than I expected to tbh.
really enjoying that heartworms album
The Sharon Van Etten and Heartworms albums will almost certainly be AOTY worthy, just a matter of how high.
This is true!
I hope folks give the Solas album a listen and sample through; it's do much more than the first few tracks represent though I know the Celtic lyrics make it a challenge... anywho.
Solas and John Glacier both new to me and, shit, they are both awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Huge +1 for Horsegirl. Stay tuned for a few words on that sound coming this week.
Oops, apologies for flipping the band name & album. Adwaith are a new discovery for me that I was lead to by Ynys.

Loved the track by Woman Wept! Will be checking out the rest of the album.
When it’s available! Just followed them on Spotify
Amazing! Thank you ❤️
Loved the Woman Wept track and REALLY enjoying the Billy Bashful album (you had me at “derivative of The Smiths).
Thanks for sharing Woman Wept. I'm on it!
Another thumbs up for Women Wept -- thanks for the tip!
Thanks, Dave. Massively appreciate people taking the time to listen.
My week was about:
Listening to Kind of Blue during the snowstorm sounds sooooo relaxing 😌 I would have probably done something if I wasn't at work during most of it
I'm still debating on A Ghost is Born as well.
Calling for snow/ice in my neck of the woods this week so I've now added Kind of Blue to the "snow day play list".
Perfect! Hopefully, you all don't get hit too hard.
Dave, funny you mention Geoff Sanoff as he produced the last Dot Dash album and played keyboard on some of the songs. I must check out the Jellybricks as well.
And I'll check out Dot Dash -- I'm not familiar with them. Thanks for the heads up.
Geoff's a great guy. He has a newish Krautrock band with Eli Janney of Girls v. Boys and James Canty of many DC bands including Nation of Ulysses.
https://zweinullzwei.bandcamp.com/
Thanks for that suggestion, I'm quite enjoying Zwei Null Zwei and added to my wish list for my next purchase.
I can send you some links to free Bandcamp downloads of some Dot Dash stuff, just message me at admin@thebeautifulmusic.com if you are interested
Only interrupting to say that Dot Dash is awesome (and are really nice guys as well!).
Some reading if you're looking to put off doing any shoveling:

Thanks!
Small world indeed! This is my favorite version of "Seven Degrees of..."
Very relaxing (and a relief!) to not have to work on Fri./Sat. Sometimes you just get lucky.
Great song! This gives me hope.
Nice! New Jack Swing wasn't something I'd normally listen to, but Bobby brown was a big exception.
I'll check out the Brubeck record, thanks for the heads up!
Nice! Thanks for this. Got some work to do this afternoon, and will play it then.
Last couple of weeks I’m hooked on mermaid avenue by billy bragg and wilco. It’s on repeat day and night and I love it just like that. For time being.
Sounds like an incredibly fun rabbit hole to be going down!
Temple Bar - Will Stratton
I was in Southern California and Mexico last week for work, so I was in the mood for some Herb Albert and the Tijuana brass, Santana, and Tribe of Gypsies.
When in Rome, er, SoCal...
This morning....a band called "You'll Never Get to Heaven" and the newest Slowdive.
Just trying now Irreversible Entanglements...

Here's another song from the album -

Thank you for these, Wally!
The physical copy of Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee arrived in the mail Saturday. The 3 LP set is a smorgasbord of fantastic tunes.
Oh wow! That's awesome. What an incredible record.
I enjoyed a mix 'Seventeen' by Coccolino Deep (it is deep house at heart but eclectic and quite epic). And I have been listening to some John Lennon.
I'll take all the deep house I can get!
I really like the Lambrini Girls album. Also, just received a couple of Shonen Knife albums. Gonna be a great week!
Can't go wrong with Shonen Knife, I have many of their albums and even saw them live many years ago, great band 👌
Shonen Knife forever!
Between episodes of the now defunct podcast DrumTok I've been playing Guy Clark's 2017 release The Best of the Dualtone Years
Read a NYT article on Jesse Welles so I've been doing a deep dive on his discography.
Really, I’m having trouble not obsessively listening to Not Like Us and TV Off since the superbowl halftime show 🤣
While I wait for some (mostly R&B, blues and soul) records to arrive, I've been spinning Donny Hathaway's three main studio albums on repeat.
What a talent! What a loss for us all.

Thanks for this, Mark! You had me at Prince Buster.
Nothing new due to weather.

The Coup ~ The Guillotine
Current retail play
Absolute 80s from So Hip It Hurts Productions for Entertainment Weekly Online 1999
2 cds 24 tracks no culls
My retail audience is mostly tourist, mostly over 50, mostly female.
The Coup is incredibly underrated! I feel like Boots Riley is about to get very very busy.
New listens this past week:
Genesis - Foxtrot. Prior to listening to this, my exposure with Genesis was limited to the Phil Collins era, which, while good, straddles out of the realm of prog rock, especially with their self-titled album and their subsequent albums. Foxtrot is solidly in the other era, where the band was led by Peter Gabriel. No re-listens this week.
Just got home from brunch at Easy Street Records in West Seattle where I bought the Free to Be You and Me record! So excited to listen to it! I had the record as a kid.
...and I'm excited for you! That's an awesome find. I can still hear the title track and "It's Alright to Cry" in my head as I type this.
Been spinning Fever 333's Darker White. Dropped months ago but only realised the whole record was out last week. Politically charged rap punk side project from the Letlive frontman!
Sade was my "new" artist for the weekend. Not that she's remotely new, but I hadn't really listened to her until the past few days
Oh man, you are in for a really good time! Any early favorites?
Have been doing a deep dive into Rammstein's music and came across another good one called "Zwitter" nice fast and heavy sound. Controversial as per usual with this band lol.
Lol. true, but I think that's to be expected with them.
Glad you're digging the new track! <3
-D
It's fantastic! IIRC, I found it through the Cycles Per Second show.
Bob Marley dominated the playlist this week. However, there were a few other choice bits. The long read is here if you are interested. https://weatheredmusic.ca
