Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great T-day weekend, and didn’t have their football team totally implode like my beloved Ducks did Saturday. At any rate, there’s few problems music can’t cure, and here’s a bit of what I had spinning over the last week.
More importantly, I want to hear from you. What have you had on? Any good pickups from Record Store Day this past Friday? Got something we all need to hear? Share it below!
Love the Flamin' Groovies shout-out! Their "Shake Some Action" is a great wake-up song for a Monday morning! The rest, to these ears, not so much....but, hey, 1 out of 10 ain't bad!! I happened onto a Spotify thread of imminently listenable artists (fairly new ones, apparently....I know, right? New AND listenable?!? Stunned me, too!)
A new-ish gal (funny, she doesn't look new-ish---there's a hint) I was researching for a new "Inside Tracks" (she did a cover of the song I'm featuring) which drops tomorrow morning, apparently has gathered several rock star fans in the dozen or so years she's been recording! Names like Elton John, Jools Holland, Carly Simon, and even Burt Bacharach (with whom she's worked on one album) are now die-hard fans of hers!
Anyway, letting the Spotify bots do their thing, I stumbled upon nifty tunes by Vacation Manor (which I believe you've featured before on a Playlist), Dayglow (them, too), and Kid Bloom, my real true new fave!! Have you "done" him, yet? "Does it Make Me Wrong?" is fab: https://open.spotify.com/track/1fVJXgO2AVjdzr6ie1qeNp?si=0a77dd1df56b433b
I don't know what young Master Bloom did to deserve being plopped into the 21st century record biz, but he, by rights, belongs in the '70s or '80s, and I mean that with all adoration and respect! I'm on you, Kid B! And, I've got a typewriter, and I'm not afraid to use it!
Sounding for all the world like a Mike Batt/Wombles Christmas joint, apparently it's a one-off band of sorts, but any song that name-checks L.A. landmarks (having lived there for 14 years) is cool to hear!
This is beautiful. One thing about artists like him is you can have something as beautiful as this simply be an INTRO for a song with a completely different type of auditory art following it. This is still one of the greatest contrasts between an intro and the track itself and I think we'll all never forget our first listen of this song lol
Yo, Paul. I agree wholeheartedly. The intro is sampled from "June" by Florence + The Machine. The sample has a reverb effect that elevates Welch's voice to an almost angelic likeness. The serenity and the calmness is imaginary. The illusion is shattered with Paige's remonstrance : "This is what the world sounds like".
There was a time when I listened to "New Kind of Ego" by The Ninth Wave every day several times a day and then I moved on. I went back to it last week for the first time in a few months and it's still just as infectious. Wonderful display of energy and one those longer songs that completely justifies its length.
One of my good music lover friends sent me a song by them called "Sometimes the Silence is Sweeter" a few years ago and I was hooked immediately. They released an album at the top of this year but also announced they were going on an indefinite hiatus too.
A couple in our neighborhood hosts a Beatles party every year. When you show up, you get to pick a sticker with the silhouette of the Beatle you want. I always pick George. Always.
(I feel like I've mentioned this before. I'm sorry if it's old news!)
I don't remember you bringing it up. I love it! I have a birthday coming up. Might steal the idea. Also: have you watched Get Back yet? It really shifted my perspective on the band, George especially.
I discovered Joy Oladokun this summer and added a couple of her songs to my eclectic mix that I listen to while working. One of them is a collaboration with Brandi Carlile, called “We Don’t Know We’re Livin.”
I should probably take it off my working mix because I always stop to absorb it. 😂

Also heard last week on the new Panera Holiday loudspeaker run was "Holiday in L.A." by Band of Merrymakers! https://open.spotify.com/track/2j468bj63lPa5tv8NI9n8B?si=a5633cf9a4834058

And, there's this other song by BOMs, "And to All a Good Night," the one actuallly played over the loudspeaker, and my intro to them: https://open.spotify.com/track/5zBsk5F5xyYOIIV2QkPJVq?si=b90bd04615a04bcc Thanks for your List, Kevin, and enjoy my new finds!😁
Thanks for all the playlists! I 'm a little short on Christmas music, so "Holiday In L.A." is a great add!

That was not what I was expecting at all!
It's one where NOT knowing what to expect gives you the best experience for sure!

Playing this as I type. Great song. How have I missed this band?!

Saw the Rheostatics on Saturday at Toronto's Legendary Horseshoe - so I've got Whale Music on repeat.
Getting ready to cue this one up shortly!
I've got All Things Must Pass on the turntable today. "French Press" will always put you in a good mood, though!

Not yet! I keep saying I'm going to sit down an barrel through it, but something always comes up.
It's worth prioritizing, for sure.
'Sco Ducks always. Listening to 'this is what i get' - vaultboy
**YES!!**
Gonna take me a bit to recover from Saturday though.

Very smooth and a nice little groove!
