I keep revisiting hip-hop instrumentals, mainly because I need to read and write a lot in the mornings, and other instrumental stuff isn't quite as upbeat (except stuff like metal). MF Doom has a couple of albums (Special Herbs, I think), and Kutmaster Kurt/Kook Keith collaborated on a really good instrumental album.
Like I wrote for The Riff yesterday, I've had Buffalo Springfield on consistently. Listen to Last Time Around for a view of just how diverse the sounds of this great band are!
Just something extra about this album that only an engineer someone sitting behind the knobs in the booth with the only fully understand the guitars are turned to 11! If you didn't know what was going on it almost gets overbearingly noisy like my buddy Valentine's but before it gets monotonous a hook comes through the noise and after 3 days and now jamming this non-stop since I found it I'm looking to put the link in here for you asking about what are we listening to lo and behold guess who produced it J Robbins of jawbreaker Fame makes a lot of sense now because it's a wouldn't have been him I would have guessed Steve Albini lol enjoy as am I ::
For the latest chapter of my 'musical maverick' novel https://challenge69.substack.com/ I needed to compile a list of my (transparently autobiographical) character's 'top twenty' albums of all-time.
Hi Kevin and fellow readers/witers! I went crate digging to Sister Ray (a well-known store here in London) and came back with some Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, BB King and Fatback. Because jazzy soulful bluesy funky tunes till I die 😅
There's some cool things coming out....September 29 is The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project - on that, I like Nick Cave and Debbie Harry singing "On the Other Side." Sarah Fimm, out of Woodstock, NY is a phenomenal singer/songwriter and keyboard player...I re-visited her album Red Yellow Sun - check out Crumbs and Broken Shells (w/Peter Murphy)
Holy crap - you having J Church in your playlist brought back some old memories....I moved to San Francisco in 1991, when the band began and lived on the J Church streetcar line. They were one of the bands that made me feel at home in a new city where I knew exactly one person. I know what I'll say I've been listening to for next weeks discussion....
For this week, not a lot of new stuff, but plenty of revisits. Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood album. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. East Forest to chill out my anxiety.
You're taking me back to church again Kevin with The Dead Milkmen! Punk Rock Girl was anthemic. Just added to my Spotify as well as Social D thanks to you. Also got the new Nicky Wire solo album this weekend, it's amazing. Very jazzy and beautiful. Finally, watching Go again after 24 years made me manually add a bunch of No Doubt and Lenny Kravitz (the OST they have on Spotify actually has neither of them included even though their songs were in the movie)
I follow Manics on IG so first heard of it there, and signed up for Bandcamp just for Nicky! But while I was there, also bought Heavenly Records' Spectators of Suicide charity rerelease. Don't know if you ever liked Manics but I daresay its even better than the original. There's two versions, one with vocals in Welsh which is a real treat!
learned that "Imma Be" samples Ride or Die by the Budos Band, which I would not have guessed, but more importantly reminded me that I haven't checked in on the Budos Band since like 2009. they have several newer albums and i'm listening to them. still very good!
Some random synapse fired in my brain last Thursday, + sent me hunting for the '80s British hard rock/heavy metal band Chrome Molly. They were ok, about how I remember them; but the period of time (1979-82) they emerged in with other great Brit bands like the early Def Leppard (before they became huge) and Saxon seem to be resonating with me right now. There was something there I need to take in right now, I guess.
Been enjoying the Nick Drake tribute compilation The Endless Coloured Ways; particularly the Fontaines D.C. and Aldous Harding covers.
Really enjoyed Kirstin Hersh’s new single, nice to hear new music from her.
And spent some time over the last week with the latest albums from bdrmm, Grian Chatten, Lael Neale and This is The Kit. And really digging “Freak Me Out” by A Very Special Episode.
CMON CMON/The Crack and the Light - This is power pop from Belgium and it's quite good.
The Small Square/The Small Square - This is a 2023 remaster of an album that came out in 2016, though I had no idea. The band is led by Paul Chastain of Velvet Crush fame and it full of "bittersweet pop" (his words).
Wye Oak/Every Day Like the Last - I know this is more a collection of singles than an album, but it holds together beautifully. "Fortune" hits a little harder and the closer "Repeat (If You Remind Me)" makes me want to press play again and repeat the whole experience.
I’ve rediscovered the Buena Vista Social Club. This music was a gift to the world. https://music.apple.com/us/album/buena-vista-social-club/1467829048

This past week was filled with the new ones by Sweeping Promises and TH Da Freak!
Huge +1 for Sweeping Promises!
Like I wrote for The Riff yesterday, I've had Buffalo Springfield on consistently. Listen to Last Time Around for a view of just how diverse the sounds of this great band are!
It's a great read!
If anyone else would like to check it out, it's here: https://medium.com/the-riff/buffalo-springfield-country-72a0da6a279a
Thanks Kevin!!!

New music: 'Hi, I'm Waiting' by *repeat repeat (duo from Nashville). Good stuff!
Just played this not too long ago, and really dug it!
Another feel-good pop song just waiting to explode. Agreed.
For the latest chapter of my 'musical maverick' novel https://challenge69.substack.com/ I needed to compile a list of my (transparently autobiographical) character's 'top twenty' albums of all-time.
Given how much love these 20 songs I felt compelled to share! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1CWBNvYv3f7ZH3PmLMFQT2?si=2df09e5b28594a7d

Can't go wrong with those names.
(and what a great name for a record store!)
Absolutely! And they’ve got tons of stuff, all genres. Crate digger paradise.

I'm on it!
I'm really enjoying the brand new release by Nicky Wire (from the Manic Street Preachers) and it was very cheap when I bought it - https://nickywire.bandcamp.com/album/nicky-wire
Love me some Manics!
And the brand new single by Spencer Segelov is also really good (RIYL early to mid period XTC) - https://spencersegelovgreatpaintings.bandcamp.com/album/and-we-get-burned
Loving this one!

That whole era was just so good. J Church, Jawbreaker, all of 'em.

That's 2 recs for Nicky Wire in one thread. I'm clearly late to the party!

Great playlist!! Skillful order (if it’s random don’t tell me!) cuz it flows just right!!
Thank you! I have a tendency to overthink them, so this is nice to hear!

also went to a show and the opener Mollyotto was delightful
Nice! Who were they opening for?
Lamorn
Dungeon of Skeletons... it’s not what you think. At all. Episode drops on Wednesday. 🤘
I'm in!

I really liked her new single as well. It'd been a little bit!

Dredd Foole and the Din
A “free rock” project with Mission of Burma from 1982. Just released collection of live recordings.
Also listening to a LOT of Karp
Whoa. This looks pretty cool. I'll check it out later today!
I promise you’ll be happy you did.

Jazzy piano vibes in this one
Phosphene and Ratboys are new to me, but I dig them. Thanks for the intro!
Been playing a lot of Tracy Chapman lately (old and new), partly for nostalgia and partly for inspiration because she’s such a great storyteller.
She really is!
I've got 3 albums this week:
CMON CMON/The Crack and the Light - This is power pop from Belgium and it's quite good.
The Small Square/The Small Square - This is a 2023 remaster of an album that came out in 2016, though I had no idea. The band is led by Paul Chastain of Velvet Crush fame and it full of "bittersweet pop" (his words).

All are new to me. Thanks for getting them on my radar!
Yay!
