Once again, we’re kicking the week off with some of what I’ve been spinning lately.
A couple of the bands featured here will be showing up soon in longer form posts, so stay tuned for that. Some of these were suggestions from the community, and as always, I’m grateful for the picks. Keep ‘em coming!
What’s everyone been listening to? Got something we should all be checking out? Want to share a win from crate digging this weekend? A band we have to hear? Share it below!
Definitely "Lynch-ian." New ground for me. This whole record pushed up on the corners of what it means to cover someone's music, and forced me to pay attention."
Dang that Young Gun Silver Fox! They are so maddeningly evocative! My mind aches trying to find a square musical hole in which to squeeze their round era- and genre-hinting sound! Kinda like a visit to the chiropractor's.....it hurts so good!! It's hard to come up with a suitable artist comp, but I think I've narrowed down their comp year to around 1978! Further evidence is required!!!😁
So many of their songs sound like they'd fit neatly on late-'70s AM radio (with the England Dans, Exiles, Paul Davis's, even Gerry Rafferty and the likes' innocuously catchy tunes) but pushing those acts' stylistic envelope just shy of Steely Dan's jazzy "sophistication" (and certainly their college-senior snob appeal). Things to do this week for moi: Listen to an entire side or album of YGSF!🎼🎵🎶👍
You're in for a treat! YGSF is one West Coast Golden Radio track after another. As you listen to their albums, you can almost pick out the influences (Ambrosia here...Paul Davis there...etc.).
Where Do We All Go by Tank and The Bangas has been on repeat for me recently. Specifically the second half/last two minutes of it. Idk if it there's a scientific explanation but it gives me the same feeling as the hook of "As" by Stevie Wonder. I don't think they sound exactly alike but there's just something similar about them. I hope I'm making sense lol
Cloud Cult came out with a new album this year that I heard them play live on tour before I paid much attention to it as a recording. Been listening to it this weekend, and it’s much more subdued compared to the band’s live performance!
I am almost at the end of my initial 100 albums from The Acclaimed Music website. So now my playlist of closing tracks has gone from almost 9 hours to about 45 mins. I will and won't miss this playlist after 18 months of it.
Seven more 'classics', data analysis wash up of those 100 albums, what have we learnt from them, a Christmas record, a brief look at 2022 and then a look to 2023 as January starts.
This project/label were totally new to me. Really dig what they're doing (and being from Portland only helps!), and the music.
This wild album of experimental Elvis covers. Very David Lynch. https://improvedsequence.bandcamp.com/album/suspicious-moon-imp078

I'm listening to this super duper bopper

A banger- especially once that beat kicks in!

Wait a sec. Blondie's Hanging on the Telephone is a *cover*? 🤯
Indeed!

Tank and the Bangas! I got onto them after watching their "Tiny Desks" performance. Worth the YouTube search!
It 100% makes sense- I can definitely hear the similarities in both songs!
Little Walter. Chess.
It's always a good time for the Blues!

I really liked this. "One way Out Of A Hole" is fantastic!

I hear you! What's next for The Runout Grooves?

A little self-indulgent playlist for me this week Kevin to celebrate our upcoming trip to (hopefully!) see the Northern Lights. It's good though.

Just seen the bit about David Lynch like Elvis covers though, now I'm going to have to check that out!
All 3 of those are fantastic. Meat Puppets' "II" is criminally underrated.
I think I've brought up Tim Baker here before, but we went to his show in Calgary last night and I feel the need to do it again. Go listen to his new album! https://open.spotify.com/album/6FB8Z2KMnKTKUbsZp6Qc5K?si=HJJPBKcjR5mQHv86sI2dIA
I'm on it! It's up next in the queue.
