Happy Monday and welcome to those of you joining us over the weekend. It’s great to have you here! Below is a bit of what I’ve been listening to over the past week, but I’d like to hear from you too.
What’s on heavy rotation in your world? Anything we should all be checking out?
I saw Orville Peck at the Palomino Festival in Pasadena on Saturday. Awesome. I'm fascinated by masked singers. I created a playlist of just Peck and Ghost. The interplay of the contrasting sound and style is mind-blowing. I also rediscovered Badfinger
I'm listening to the 2001 album Diamond Mine by the Scottish singer/songwriter King Creosote and the English electronic artist Jon Hopkins. It has been one of my go to morning time albums pretty much since it came out. King Creosote, whose real name is Kenny Anderson, has this ethereal voice that could have floated in with the North Sea's morning fog. The music drifts in and out at almost an ambient level. The reverb soaked drones are subtle and the drums are minimal or non-existent. Anderson adds a a light strumming guitar to most of the tracks but it is his lovely Scottish tenor that really blows me away. The album never fails to send me out in a calm and peaceful way. The funny thing about this album is that neither of the two artists have any music that sounds anything like this.
I'm an old dude, so I generally listen to Old Dude Music. :D But every now and then something newer comes along that catches my ear.
Recently, I checked out a solo album from the amazing John Frusciante of the Chili Peppers. It's a dark EDM record, and it's an interesting listen. It's called "Maya".
I also discovered a power pop band called The Legal Matters a little while ago, and have been listening to their album Conrad, from 2016. They have a new one as well entitled Chapter Three but haven't gotten that new record yet.
As for Old Dude Music, I had a chance to crank up my stereo yesterday and listen to some older stuff I dig. I dipped back into King Crimson's album, Discipline. I love that album. It's beautifully weird, very cool, yet accessible, and the performances remain jaw-dropping all these years later. The production has some 80's sheen on it, but it has held up very well and still sounds vibrant and modern.
Listened to Automatic's new album, thanks to you. Loved it! It'll be a recommended listen in the next Ponytail Press post.
Also: reorganized the record collection autobiographically from when the music entered my life (rather than when I bought them) and started brainstorming a short story idea for the first album, Beethoven's 5th and 7th Symphonies. Wish me luck!
I never tire of Sturgill Simpson and force my way through the garbage playlists at 175 bpm running cadence. Lol any chance you make running playlists that are actually good and are set to certain cadences?
I don't normally do that (my running cadence is more of a plodding/gasping for breath/questioning life decisions pace), but I'm happy to put something together!
Old albums by Fall Out Boy. 😂

That's quite the combo!
Leikeli47's new album Shape Up!

Listening to this right now at work. It's a nice counterbalance for the (barely) controlled chaos of our early morning operation.

Nothing wrong with "old dude" music! :)

Right on! I'm glad you like it. I'm looking forward to checking out the short story. Good luck!
