Happy Monday, and a warm welcome to those who joined us over the weekend! I’m happy to have you here. We kick off each week with a little bit of what I’ve had in heavy rotation.
Then it’s your turn.
What’ve you been listening to? Got something we should all be checking out? Maybe an upcoming release you’re excited about? Share it below!
I really dug the groove here. And, hey, art is a powerful thing! I'm just glad he was able to hear her over the crowd that's usually in front the picture.
Eclectic list, this! Of the things I'd not heard, I sorta like Old Moon, but it's the Beachheads that make me wanna dig a little more into them. I can't seem to find much on them, bio-wise. They appear to be Swedish/Norse to a degree, if horizontal lines through their "o"s can be any indication!
Otherwise, they seem to be a bit alt-ish, while not averse to melodies and harmonies (like so many of the alt persuasion seem to be, for some reason)! Flake Music was interesting...did I hear "Simon LeBon" being name-checked in their song? I see they're linked somewhat to The Shins. Thanks, Kevin, for a nifty and challenging 'List for a Monday!
Spent the weekend pulling together the soundtrack of all the songs/albums referenced in the latest Track/chapter of my novel. Even though I'm clearly biased, it's a corker (and even has a New Order track thrown in for you Kevin)!
Whoa! Those are 2 records I haven't heard in quite a while. Might need to change that ASAP. "I Want Your (Hands On Me)" off the 1st record, and "Emperor's New Clothes" off the 2nd are my faves.
Got caught in a mid-80s metal binge while researching the history and artists that were part of Hear ‘N Aid and the song “Stars,” the all-star metal response to “We Are the World.” Been playing Dio, Queensryche, Quiet Riot and Judas Priest. I pulled a neck muscle banging my head.
I've been obsessed with Japanese Breakfast lately! Do you like Jubilee? I used to prefer the Soft Sounds record, but I think Jubilee is becoming my favorite JBrekkie album
Slightly longer answer: Jubilee was one of my top 3 records for '21, but "Diving Woman" off Soft Sounds is my favorite song of hers. And Psychopomp is pretty awesome too. :)
Several years ago, I heard "The Time It Takes" by a band I knew nothing about — The Snow Ponies. Extremely catchy piece of pop/Americana that I couldn't get out of my head for weeks. Randomly I thought about it again last week and here we go again.
Also, there's a great documentary — "Red Dog" — by Luke Dick, talking about his childhood with his mom and her friends in an Oklahoma City strip club. Dick has since written a bunch of hits for Miranda Lambert, et al, and she duets with him on the song "Polyester," which is great. Give it a look.
Looking forward to 'Aşk' by Altin Gün after hearing their latest single - Rakıya Su Katamam. An entire album of Turkish psych-folk reinterpretation of traditional folk tunes.
I fell in love with Altin Gun after hearing Yuce Dag Basinda (I'm sure I destroyed that spelling). I didn't know they had a new record coming out. I'm excited to check it out!
Good luck to your Bengals! I'm still in mourning after the Bucs implosion last night...
Lemme know if you find a new favorite!

Sometimes I like to mix it up. :)
Beachheads are Norwegian, and a couple of them were in a metal band before this. Quite the pivot!
Nørwegian, you say? Very cøøl. Yes, quite the pivøt!

Always a good time for New Order!
Sinead O’connor for a week straight, both of the first two records. What a story, what a person, what amazing music.

Heck Yeah!
(for the music, not your neck- I hope that feels better!)
It was a metaphorical pulling of the neck but I appreciate the concern!;)
At our age, one can never be too sure. :)
Just discovered this band called Hammock. Their latest release is *chefs kiss*
That's a new one for me; I'm off to check 'em out!

That documentary sounds right up my alley. Both songs do too. I'm not normally an Americana guy, but I've sure been enjoying a lot of it lately.
this new EP called Eros in the Bunker by this UK group called Double Virgo! A great indie somewhat heavy rock.
Just started listening. I'm about a minute in as I type this. Seems ominous, but in line with the ash grey skies I'm looking out at.

What a delight to have a new song from Tiny Ruins! Her album, Olympic Girls, was on my 2019 Top 25 and my list of the 100 best albums of the 2010s. Beautiful tune, too. https://www.flyingnun.co.nz/blogs/news/tiny-ruins-is-back-with-new-single-the-crab-waterbaby
I made some tea a listened to this (not exactly fast livin', I know). I really liked the vibe here.
