Good morning and welcome to everyone that joined us over the weekend! It’s great to have you with us. We kick each week off with some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation.
Many of these come from reader recommendations; please keep ‘em coming!
Now it’s your turn.
What song/record/band should we have on our radar? Find something killer while out crate digging? Maybe a show you caught this week? Share it below!
After watching an interview with Pink the other day, I decided to give her new album a listen. So glad I did! For a long time I didn’t appreciate her as an artist, but I’ve come around. Great collars with The Lumineers, First Aid Kit (digging in more this week there), and Chris Stapleton.
Saw Yo La Tengo at the Metro in Chicago on Friday night. Highly recommend their new album “This Stupid World.” Also saw Chicago metal duo Djunah on Friday at the Empty Bottle after the YLT show. Listen to “Femina Furens” for some therapeutic riffing and rage.
Was lucky enough to see YLT the next night in Milwaukee. Killer show, as I'm guessing yours was. I'd definitely second that recommendation of This Stupid World!
Yes, YLT was great and brought out Wilco to play a set of songs including the Beatles, Motörhead, and Dylan. So great! Love Milwaukee for its venues and record stores! Where did YLT play?
Hi Kevin and fellow readers! “Delicious” by Fatback on streaming whilst working out at the weekend, and “When I’m Alone I Cry” by Marvin Gaye on vinyl this afternoon at home while I recover from some nasty cold/covid. How about you?
Love that Old 97s track. I've been on a Talking Heads run this week. Also enjoying a new album by the group Say Zuzu, a mid 1990s alt-country band from New Hampshire that recently reformed; and the Darlingside catalogue after catching them last week on Mountain Stage.
Today would have been Billy Mackenzie's 66th Birthday so, to celebrate the life of a much missed genius, I've gone beyond The Associates to listen to his great solo album 'Beyond the Sun'.
(PS If anybody wants a bit more Billy, they should try the latest chapter of my serialised novel at challenge69.substack.com where he is this instalment's 'musical maverick' theme.
i hate that i can't say "trump" anymore! the association is enough to ruin a perfectly good conversation. i haven't heard it in a song yet, but that will be a sad day.
We can totally say it in the context of one card beating another. On a related note, I might be the only person in WI that has no clue how to play Euchre.
Friday was a big release day and I had a long drive ahead so I dumped a bunch of albums, EPs, and singles into a playlist. Definitely had a few of these on repeat! New albums from Arooz Aftab and Ben Sloan, new EPs from Yaya Bey, Molly Joyce, and Them Airs, new singles from Summer Like The Season, Charlotte Dos Santos, Foyer Red, and an intriguing rescue project of Sean Lennon's, Zack Rosen. Find them all here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5qIt6R93A5jM63ub497aGr?si=9d8545db26aa46c7
I'm not sure I recognize a single name here (aside from Sean Lennon, of course). Got the list on tap for later this morning, and am looking forward to finding some new stuff!
Hey, Kevin: These things plan themselves. We had started a punk rock section in my Writing About Music: Rock, Pop, Rap. . . or Pop, Rap, Rock. Whatever, the class had been so enthused about the Native Tongues movement late 1980s/early 1990s hip-hop that swings, and De La Soul were interviewed at length by Ari Melber the other day. So we're going today for anything from the now-available streaming "3 Feet High and Rising," the DeLa debut.
The record, the event, or both? :)
People really seem to like this record. I'm on it!
X-Ray Spex ‘Germ Free Adolescents’ and the Poly Styrene doc ‘I Am A Cliche.’
I gotta add that doc to my list!

I'm in that same boat. After seeing this, I'll give her new one a spin!

Turner Hall, right by the Fiserv Forum. Perfect-sized venue for them.
Natalie Merchant’s new song is everything you’d want, beautiful and smart and catchy as all get-out.
Oh man, I didn't know she was even recording anymore! For some reason, I had it in my head that she was done with the biz and was teaching somewhere.
EVERYTHING on Mammoth WVH...even have my husband hooked!
I love how "all in" on this record you are. Always great top find a record/band like that. :)
He already released the first single from his second album, Another Celebration at the End of the World, and it is fantastic!
Fontaines D.C. - “In ár gCroíthe go deo"
Mr Gnome - “Watch the City Sail Away”
Squid - "G.S.K."

Smooth sounds. I hope you're feeling better!
Thanks!
Sarah Shook and the Disarmers!!!

Just cued up "No Time To Lose." So far, so good!
After seeing them last week Thunderbird by Hermanos Gutierrez
Really liked the vibe on this one. I thought I knew this group, but after looking, they were new to me.
Love Old 97s!

I can't say enough about Amelia Curran and Phosphorescent right now. Wonderful stuff. Listening to lots of Nick Lowe, too!

Always a good time for Nick Lowe!
OH! And don't sleep on Cherubs if you like it noisy. :)
Noise= good.
Nothing gets a day going like LCD Soundsystem's 'Sound of Silver."
There we go!

Nice! My long term goal is to get my oldest to appreciate that era of hip hop. More swing, more bounce, more 808. It's a work in progress.
And I still gotta come audit that class!
Re the Playlist #186, any list which includes The Cars and Old 97's works for me!
Typo. Playlist #187.
I'm glad you liked it! #186 is pretty good too. :)
That is a solid mixtape Kevin. It would be interesting if you gave one sentence on how you came to listen to each track and/or why you liked it.
My listening was dominated by Dave Edmunds, working my way through my vinyl collection.
Miles Davis, I'm working on the CD collection.
The Loud Apartment album, New Future, dominated streaming.
I liked Dave Edmunds a lot. I have twelve of his solo album and numerous appearances elsewhere.
Miles Davis is similar, with lots of collaborations.
Loud Apartment are new to me, but I like what they have.
I love Dave Edmunds! I just picked up his '81 "Best of" record. Including a sentence or two is a great idea! I may have to start doing that.
Thanks for the reminder of Morphine’s delicious saxophone sound. No new or interesting music for me this weekend -- just my same old writing mix.
Sometimes the "same old" is exactly what we need!
Okay, now you’ve done it!!!! I downloaded That Sweet Breath by Lowmello...LOVE IT!!!!!
It’s great, isn’t it?
Love it!! I’m following him now on Instagram!!! Thanks, thanks a lot, Kevin!!!!!😊
