For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation:
Now it’s your turn.
What caught your ear this week? Any luck crate digging? How ‘bout at yard sales? Any upcoming releases or shows you’re excited about?
What a playlist. Missed the fact that Wussy released more tracks - beyond excited for that. Wishy coming to DC soon, and I have that one on repeat. And always great to have Superchunk in the rotation.
This week I received Fininish psychedelic metal band Oranssi Pazuzu's new album Muuntautuja . We'll see how it wears, but initial reaction was that it really didn't sound that much like metal, it reminded me more of something like Skinny Puppy or early Ministry. If a band in a genre sometimes known for being doctrinaire tries to expand their sound, but they expanded into a genre that's not as good, is that a step forward? We'll find out.
Also received the 16th album from Norwegian progressive metal band Enslaved, Heimdal. I'm not sure they've ever made a bad album, , but also not sure they've ever made a truly great one. Heimdal continues that, liked it just fine and in the coming weeks I hope to find what the story they're telling is about.
Right this minute listening to my newest Mojo compilation called Future Legends, supposedly ' 15 tracks of dystopian sci-fi Rock'
The Hawkwind track is kind of silly, but I like the Iggy Pop and James Williamson track and the King Gzzard and the Lizard Wizard too.
I'm going off memory here, but this might be the first time Skinny Puppy has been mentioned on this page, and I'm here for it. I'm a fan of them and early Ministry both!
* Meryl Streek 'Songs For The Deceased' - Easily my favorite punk album of the past few years. On a crazy sidenote, I was watching Bob's Burgers last night, the episode called "The Kids Run the Restaurant" (Season 3, Episode 20), and near the end Gene inexplicably calls his dad "Meryl Streek"... is this where Meryl Streek got the name for the band?! I read a few interviews and could find no corroboration.
* Wussy 'Cincinnati, OH' - So much to love about Wussy.
* Haley Heynderickx 'Seed of a Seed' - Shades of Vile + Newsom ÷ Fleet Foxes. Lush & complex yet accessable.
NEW & SHINY
* Peter Perrett 'The Cleaning' - Peter's work still reminds me of VU & Cohen, given his dark, poetic lyrics and complex, personal themes. Not a bad thing at all.
* Illiterate Light 'Arches' - Described as eclectic in their genre bouncing & indeed, there's something for everyone.
* Courteeners 'Pink Cactus Café' - Another band that is difficult to pin down; a bit indie-pop, dash of synth-pop and at times anthemic rock.
UNDECIDED
* The Cure 'Songs of a Lost World' - There's perhaps too much... overture for me and not enough dynamic range, especially lacking any sort of hook. Heck, most tracks have 2:30 avg instructions overture.
Wussy: YES! The record came earlier this week, and I can;t stop playing it. It's pretty much already sewn up a spot on my AOTY list.
Illiterate Light: I just saw they have a new record out! Chris Zappa turned me on to them, and I really liked their last one. Hoping this one is the same.
The Cure: Fair points all around-especially on overture, though in my case, I think it's a plus. I went in hoping for something in the same lane as Disintegration.
Great list. Always find some new songs to add to my cue!
My weekend listening included Thee Sacred Soul's new album, Another Side of Bob Dylan, Television's Marquee Moon , Talk Talk's Book of Eden, and Ohio Players' Pleasure All on glorious vinyl!
Quincy Jones was responsible for a staggering number of hits. But not everything he produced worked well. He produced Lesley Gore's 1976 "comeback" album "Love Me By Name," which was primarily ballads. Although it did include this upbeat track, which featured The Brothers Johnson https://youtu.be/Agq8jp1bDjk?si=AkPzVYhQs05UB1Xr
I’m totally biased, as one of my first LPs as a kid was 1984 (and Car’s Heartbeat City). It’s sentimental. It’s funny. It’s not a tell-all. It’s journalistic at times, as he quotes other books, including DLR’s. His commentary on DLR is great. I am really enjoying it. Wish it was 400 pages longer.
I had a wave of nostalgia for high school, so I busted out Cinderella's "Long Cold Winter" for the first time in maybe 25 years.
Still holds up. Underrated record.
Also, been listening to Karmic Juggernaut a lot lately. They're a prog outfit from New Jersey that sounds a lot like King Crimson and Spock's Beard had a baby and Jon Anderson to sing vocals.
This description might tbe the best thing I read all day! lol. And of course, now I gotta play the record. Thanks for the rec.! Hope all is good with you "next door.'
* I had a busy week leading up to the first of two record release shows on Saturday, so I listened a lot to a few favorite instrumental records that calm me:
- John Coltrane - Ballads
- Bill Frisell - Good Dog, Happy Man
- Tom Verlaine - Warm and Cool, Around
* Last night, with the show behind me, I went deep into Elvis Costello's expanded reissue of King of America, reading lyrics and notes for each song as I went along. So far, so good -- the remastered version sounds great. I'm especially looking forward to the live set, "a never heard before 17-song concert recorded on January 27, 1987 at The Royal Albert Hall in London in the company of James Burton, Jim Keltner, Jerry Scheff, Benmont Tench & T-Bone Wolk." What a band! I'm tempted to spring for the box set.
* Like Senor Fix, I also checked out Peter Perrett's The Cleansing and dig it so far.
Looking forward to the playlist and your recommendations. Have a great week!
On a related side note, can we talk about how awesome lyric sheets are, and how rare they are today? I love following along as I listen too, and can't always do that anymore.
I started listening to some older comfort music again as the Seattle days are growing darker and windier and moodier again. This Josh Garrels album always feels like a lit candle and warm blanket.
"We Had Love" by The Scientists. Had to Shazam a YouTube clip of Guy Ritchie's 'RocknRolla' film for an article and thought, "Holy f*ck! This tune is perfect!"
Go West's We Close Our Eyes. I do love good pop music, and this is a nice tune and the geezer has a voice I like, but there's something extra about this one which I can't quite put my finger on.
My recent enamoration with the new Tears For Fears album led me somehow to Tubeway Army (Gary Numan) and Soft-Cell. 🤷♂️. As Amyl and The Sniffers get the punk spotlight of the moment, I quickly drew back to Wendy O. Williams and The Plasmatics, ‘New Hope For The Wretched’. While I appreciate the new Amyl album, it is a far cry from the brutal war machine that The Plasmatics assaulted us with. ✌️
Listened to the sounds of a city over the weekend. Street drums, two really good Blues guitar players, and a host of other street music. Plus fantastic food trucks.
Chicago has so much to offer if you just slow down and give it a moment.
I own rental property and a tenant moved out and left a lot of personal items in the property. I had to clean it out last week but I scored two boxes of records that had almost every Led Zeppelin album, a lot of Hendrix, Dylan, Clapton, Doobie Brothers, Willie Nelson and various albums from lots of other artists. I've been going through the boxes to check for scratches and just playing through many of them. The best thing to me so far has been the Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions box set.
Thanks for the reminder on Led Zepp's BBC Sessions! I haven't played that in years so way past time to give it a spin (well, maybe not a spin, but at least a click!)
I saw Brett Newski at Rough Trade West yesterday and bought a copy of his book It’s Hard To Be A Person along with the accompanying soundtrack on vinyl. This song is the highlight
‘Million Voices Whisper’ has quickly become my favorite Warren Haynes solo album. Out this past Friday. “Real, Real Love,” a song he finished that Gregg Allman started, is one of the many standouts. Derek Trucks guests on several tracks, the first time they’ve recorded together since the Allmans disbanded.
As with several others, have been listening to the new Cure album! I love it.
I took my middle son to the record store because he had a gift certificate. He picked out Tyler the Creator’s Flower Boy vinyl, and I bought the new Cure on vinyl.
Apparently there was an issue with the vinyl distribution or production and not everyplace got the vinyl in. I snagged the last copy at my local store, and nicely it was the white marble ❤️❤️❤️ and like $34
I haven't done this update for a bit, but here is what I've listened to or read this last week -
Blitzen Trapper - 100s of 1000s, Millions of Billions - I'm not real familiar with BT, but I really enjoyed this album
Post YHFT Wilco albums as I have tickets to see them at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa this December. I particularly enjoy Star Wars, Schmilco, and Cousin
Husker Du (see below) - Zen Arcade - Wow! Definitely worth multiple listens.
I've been reading Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Averred and listening to the music as I read each chapter. In doing this I'm catching up on music that I didn't really appreciate back in that day - Black Flag, Minor Threat (really impressive music!), Mission from Burma, and just now Husker Du (Zen Arcade). The book is really enjoyable and gives an interesting history of music I was always aware of, but didn't necessarily listen to.
And after seeing your link, I did watch episode 1 of Salon du Monde. Great concept and great show! I loved the older 90's shows they are basing this on.
Great to see you here! Thank you for watching Salon Du Monde. It's an incredible roster of talent, and was an honor to be a part of.
I haven't heard Blitzen trapper in quite awhile! I'll have to fix that. Every time I listen to Zen Arcade, I find something new- a chord here...some lyircs there...
I’m liking “Habits” by Gary Clark Jr, and Yannis and the Yaw’s “Can’t stop the rain”. Yannis and the Yaw is side project for the lead singer of Foals with drummer Tony Allen - his drumming really unique and good. I’m lucky to have this radio station in my area. We have a military base where I live, so the soldiers from being from all around allows this radio station to exist. The manager for the station tries to keep up with streaming. It’s 95.7 Ft. Johnson.
Jessica Pratt - Here in the Pitch. I have to thank Songletter for sharing this one - I wouldn't have considered listening to it otherwise. I am glad I did listen to it - Pratt's vocals are great, and the music itself is pretty relaxing. Definitely something to listen to if I am stressed after work.
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary. Someone, either here or on Threads (I can't remember which) suggested to listen to some of the smaller Canadian acts. I decided last night to go search up the charts on RateYourMusic and found this to be a pretty highly rated release from Canada. Upon listening, I can see why - it sounds a bit like Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over The Sea. Unfortunately, it doesn't do much for me. At least the second half of this record is a bit better.
The week's highlight is Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Live At Fillmore East, 1969. The long list and reading are to be found here: https://weatheredmusic.ca/2024/11/04/44-52/
Thanks for the link! Hopefully, you got some sleep! You've sold me on Librarians With Hickeys and I'm looking forward to checking out the record when it drops later this week.
I’m all over The Cure’s latest, having listened to it more than a dozen times since its release on Friday in addition to watching the stream of their launch party. The album is brilliant, their best work since Disintegration. It’ll definitely be a top ten album for me this year, possibly top five. Whether it’ll hit the top spot is debatable solely because of how dark it is.
The first few lines of Sure as the Sun hit middle age me *hard*, and I love it.
Game 3 of New York City FC vs FC Cincinnati in the Bailey Saturday afternoon followed by a Wussy show Saturday night is proof that I occasionally live a charmed life. Just like Momma sings! https://open.spotify.com/track/4MZfdXX0OnqH3tGxEsm1nU
I don’t know what it is about Chuck Cleaver & Lisa Walker, but they have a knack for writing songs that resonate deep with me. The new record came a few days ago, and the lyric sheet is some of the best reading I've done all week.
Soccer and a Wussy show? This is the perfect day. An Ohio-all-the-time charmed life for sure! Good luck Saturday!
How many times can I listen to Endsong by The Cure? Never too many times. Just love it and it speaks to an awareness of our own mortality so powerfully. What a thrill to find someone producing some of their very best work more than 40 years since I first enjoyed their music.
Thanks for this! Resiliency is definitely a theme for today.
Without You - Air Supply
The song going through my head, “Pink Pony Club”
From Chappell Roan’s live SNL performance this weekend
Yes!!! That was a great performance!!
That was quite a performance! She should be on Broadway!
What a show!
What a playlist. Missed the fact that Wussy released more tracks - beyond excited for that. Wishy coming to DC soon, and I have that one on repeat. And always great to have Superchunk in the rotation.
Wussy's new record is out on the 15th. I got a preoder copy, and FWIW, I think it's f'ing incredible. Always a good time for Superchunk indeed!
Still buzzing here in DC from a great MJ Lenderman show last week, including a really strong opening set from Ryan Davis and the Roadhouse Band. Brian from our site wrote it up here - https://3albums6oldguys.substack.com/p/60gs-special-mj-lenderman. Ryan Davis' 2023 record is here - https://sophomorelounge.bandcamp.com/album/ryan-davis-the-roadhouse-band-dancing-on-the-edge
I saw this show in Boston a couple weeks ago! MJ and Ryan were both great. Both bands came out at the end to play "Werewolves of London" together.
Thanks for the links!
Bandcamp featured the Smashing Times from Baltimore in its Friday roundup, and I've been enjoying ever since. Fairly chill and entertaining jangle pop with an 80s UK vibe to it - https://thesmashingtimes.bandcamp.com/album/mrs-ladyships-and-the-cleanerhouse-boys. And that took me back to the great Neutrals record, which never disappoints - https://neutrals.bandcamp.com/album/new-town-dream
on my weekend list
Neutrals rule!
Hey Kev. Here's my weekly playlist https://open.substack.com/pub/recentanddecent/p/recent-and-decent-45?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=1z6rnh although I'm doing a fair bit of full albums listens at the moment including Neighbours Burning Neighbours, Goat and toe.
Hey Matt! As always thanks for the list! Another week of not sharing the same tracks. lol. Maybe next week, then? :)
Yep, we'll try again!
This week I received Fininish psychedelic metal band Oranssi Pazuzu's new album Muuntautuja . We'll see how it wears, but initial reaction was that it really didn't sound that much like metal, it reminded me more of something like Skinny Puppy or early Ministry. NEW & EXCEPTIONALLY SHINY:

I love much of Courteeners’ back catalogue but Pink Cactus Cafe hasn’t grabbed me so far. Solitude of the Nightbus is a bit of a grower though.
This was their first album for me. Based on your reply I'm giving St Jude a listen.
Yes! Would also recommend Anna and Concrete Love.
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Some quick takes in (sorta) order:
The Cure
I caught the live stream from London on Friday - they are still a great band!
You & me both!
Great list. Always find some new songs to add to my cue!
My weekend listening included Thee Sacred Soul's new album, Another Side of Bob Dylan, Television's Marquee Moon , Talk Talk's Book of Eden, and Ohio Players' Pleasure All on glorious vinyl!
Thank you, Dusty!
Your sounds like my kinda mix! Love that all of these were on vinyl as well.
Quincy Jones was responsible for a staggering number of hits. But not everything he produced worked well. 100% with you and "staggering" might even be an understatement! Thhanks for sharing this one; I'd never heard it before.
New Cure LP. And reading Alex Van Halen’s book, so lots of VH.
What do you think of the book so far?
I’m totally biased, as one of my first LPs as a kid was 1984 (and Car’s Heartbeat City). It’s sentimental. It’s funny. It’s not a tell-all. It’s journalistic at times, as he quotes other books, including DLR’s. His commentary on DLR is great. I am really enjoying it. Wish it was 400 pages longer.
This absolute banger

A banger indeed! Hope all is good with you, Punit!
The Girl in Red, "I'll Call You Mine"
Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" (Wishing for a speedy recovery for Matthew)
Peter Gabriel, "Playing for Time"
That's a great trio of picks, Jon! Right there with you wishing Sweet a fast/full recovery.
Good Morning from the left coast.

Man, I haven't listened to Long Cold Winter in quite a while. Always loved it.
Worth another play, soon!
Here is a playlist of my heavy-rotation songs at the moment

Thanks for thsi, Gilby! "Magnetic" is soooo good!
* I had a busy week leading up to the first of two record release shows on Saturday, so I listened a lot to a few favorite instrumental records that calm me:

On a related side note, can we talk about how awesome lyric sheets are, and how rare they are today? I love following along as I listen too, and can't always do that anymore.
I started listening to some older comfort music again as the Seattle days are growing darker and windier and moodier again. This Josh Garrels album always feels like a lit candle and warm blanket.
https://open.spotify.com/album/3jrVFS6lW7HvxOKN7QPQC8?si=bPJCFGmhRpCfk2hRKejwgQ
There's so, so much to miss about the PacNW, but the short days aren't one of them for me. Perfect time for comfort music!
MC Lyte: "Cha Cha Cha"
IMO, one of the most underrated MCs from back in the day.
The women of hip hop were scarce because of all the misogyny, but some of them were amazing, and VERY underrated. Completely agree!
The Cure - Songs of a Lost World
The Orb - Metallic Spheres in Colour
Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan - In Session
Nice! Haven't heard the orb in...well, a while. Gonna have to change that ASAP.
I hadn’t either, so I figured I’d throw some on. They still sound so awesome, dude. Better than I even remembered.
"We Had Love" by The Scientists. Had to Shazam a YouTube clip of Guy Ritchie's 'RocknRolla' film for an article and thought, "Holy f*ck! This tune is perfect!"
With an endorsement like that, I gotta hear it!
Bought a 7" single by them many years ago and had no idea it became such a collectible single - this is the one I have - https://www.discogs.com/release/1248597-The-Scientists-Frantic-Romantic-Shake-Together-Tonight
New Damiano
New Gwen Stefani
Bruno and Rose Apt (it’s crack, but happy crack)
Oddly enough, Panic Attack by (forgive me) Halsey had caught my attention.
That’s me, stuck in the bubblegum
We love us some happy crack/bubblegum! The Damiano track is infectious. Thanks for sharing it earlier!
Still the same but I did hear Echo and the Bunnymen - Killing Moon for the first time in many years, very nice song.
Love this!
Yes!
Distracted by L.E.O.
Go West's We Close Our Eyes. I do love good pop music, and this is a nice tune and the geezer has a voice I like, but there's something extra about this one which I can't quite put my finger on.
It's a fantastic track!
From tears for fears to Tubeway Army is my kind of scrambled line! I love it.
Remember when The Plasmatics were in SCTV and then saw them live around that time 👍
Listening to some of my favorite albums of the year and diving into some new tracks:
Your Money, My Summer - Everything Everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkhrOjLD1f0
Stuck in the Middle - Lenny Kravitz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWm448UKEXE
Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come - The Wombats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gwfPY68vUs
Back to You - St. Lucia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPxqqcd3amg
She Flows like H20 - Captial Cities feat. Rzyan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGInskLnAZw
Thank you for htese, Dan! I think we might've talked about it before, but St. Lucia is fantastic! I love their sound.
Good morning Kevin,
Listened to the sounds of a city over the weekend. Street drums, two really good Blues guitar players, and a host of other street music. Plus fantastic food trucks.
Chicago has so much to offer if you just slow down and give it a moment.
Good morning! I love this. Chicago is a whole vibe. I don't get down there nearly enough.
I own rental property and a tenant moved out and left a lot of personal items in the property. A silver lining to having to do a turnover for sure! Sounds like they left you some good records.

I’m going to spend the day listening to Quincy Jones (RIP)
Great idea! What a loss for all of us, but what a legacy! (RIP)
As with several others, have been listening to the new Cure album! I love it.

Agreed. Not for nothing, you might enjoy today's (Tuesday) post.
Planning to make a run to my favoeite store on Friday. Hoping they have it in stock.

My favorite recent listens:
The Waeve - City Lights
Nada Surf - Moon Mirror
Mint Field - Aprend a Ser
Beulah - Before Our Heartstrings Break
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
Do Make Say Think - Goodbye Enemy Airships...
Interpol - Antics
Kelly Lee Owens - Dreamstate
Great list! Moon Mirror seems to get better with every listen.
Johnson.
Sounds like a cool station! I'll see if I can find it on Radio Garden.
New listens this week:
No retreads this week.

You probably already saw this but I’m spinning A Girl Called Eddy again. Can’t go wrong with that one.
I did see it! It’s a new one for me, and given your endorsement of it, one I need to check out ASAP.
I watched “Back to Black” on a flight recently and fell in love again with Amy’s music. Such a talent. Gone too soon!
Gone too soon indeed! If I can ask, was the flight for work or for fun?
Fortunately for fun! 🤩
How many times can I listen to Endsong by The Cure? Never too many times. Just love it and it speaks to an awareness of our own mortality so powerfully. What a thrill to find someone producing some of their very best work more than 40 years since I first enjoyed their music.
It's incredible, isn't it? Not for nothing, you might enjoy today's newsletter! :)
I am absolutely, chronically, ridiculously obsessed with Endsong.
Carsie Blanton - saw her perform live on Saturday night, and have been listening to her music since. The Red Album is amazing!
October Sky by Yebba. Other songs on the album are great too
