I listen to Chris Molanphy’s podcast “Hit Parade” and he recently did an episode on CBGB and some of the early acts that came out of the club’s formative years.
One of the featured bands was Talking Heads, and I found myself diving head-first into their early material. There’s definitely some gems in there.
Just this morning, my echo show started cycling through songs after I played an REM song that was stuck in my head - I recognized the intro to Burning Down the House, but when the singing started it was a cover by Paramore and it’s pretty great. I just read that it’s the first release of a tribute album that is still being put together. Kind of excited!
Interesting! I'll have to check that out. My longtime favorite from Talking Heads is "Psycho Killer," and I'd definitely be curious to hear a modern take on that one.
1.) Returning to Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music...one of the all time best records (imo).
2.) Stanley Road-Paul Weller. This one I’ve always been aware of but only now is it starting to click with songs like ‘Time Passes’ and ‘Wings of Speed.’
All of the discussion around J. Mascis lead to me a realization: I am more of a Pavement and Stephen Malkmus kind of person. I have had Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks on heavy rotation over the last few weeks. Real Emotional Trash, Mirror Traffic, Wig out at Jagbags.
The Smile - Wall of Eyes - and Ty Segall - Three Bells - have been in heavier rotation.
I am loving the new Ty Segall album, ‘Three Bells’. Also took a ride back and listened to Stereo MC’s. Main listen was Kansas. Kansas has been a huge part of my musical timeline throughout life and we saw their 50th anniversary show on Saturday. There are not a huge amount of bands that can do a 2+ hour set with no opener or break. They did, with a very strong setlist spanning ten of their albums.
Stereo MCs! That's one I haven't heard in a while. Glad to hear Kansas can still put on a great show. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like they are always on the road.
I'm only a few minutes in, but really digging this! The bio says they're from Cambridge mass, but also mentions "Oregonian soil," so as a native Oregonian, I'm going with that. :)
Looking further down the Bandcamp page, it seems that refers to the Blimp, a previous project of the lead of the Spatulas that came from Eugene. Think she's in a better place with the Spatulas, but the Oregon roots remain strong. https://mirandaspatula.bandcamp.com/album/i-need-to-go-to-a-hospital
And very excited that this Ethio-jazz/Afrobeat/psych-rock collective based in Belgium announced a new record for April. Been back to this track form thier 2021 release over and over for the past week; even led off our radio show with it yesterday. So infectious. https://kolonel-djafaar.bandcamp.com/track/bactrian-camel
Must be a ripple in the freak wave. I just did a post yesterday on my newsletter for Boredoms-Super Are.
A band you could listen to the entirety of your life snd still find new things to hear in them. What a totally unique band that really don't get talked about enough.
You can't really go wrong with any of their stuff with Frusciante on guitar. Maybe their last two albums are a bit bloated, but there are some gems to be found.
Also, I have quite a few things to catch up on. Now I'm going trough Joy In The Journey's "Alphabet Soup Week 05: Artists Filed Under C", many fire songs in there ❤️🔥
There are several names on your playlist I'm not familiar with so I look forward to digging in. Love that Waits cut. The version on Letterman (I think) with David Hidalgo on guitar was a blast.
Up to Friday, my week was all about Small Town, a live Bill Frisell record with bassist Thomas Morgan that I wasn't familiar with. Meditative and lovely, a nice way to wind down your day.
From Friday on, it was all about The Last Dinner Party's debut, Prelude To Ecstasy. Audacious baroque pop bangers with shades of Bowie and Roxy Music. It's a blast.
I’ve spent a lot of time with Marika Hackman’s Big Sigh after giving it short shrift a few weeks ago. I’m loving it now.
NewDad’s MADRA, and the new Future Islands and TORRES albums have also been on heavy rotation and are all AOTY candidates (along with Big Sigh).
Last night and this morning I’ve been listening to The Last Dinner Party’s Prelude to Ecstasy. Some fantastic songs on here but also some tracks that feel overwrought and a little too self-indulgent for my tastes. Will be interesting to see how this one ages.
Happy Monday(s)! Devon Gilfillian’s latest album, “Love you Anyway”, was spinning on my turntable this morning. The creamy/translucid vinyl looks pretty (until you start battling with the static, that is), but the music is 🔥
Love the Tom Waits' "Chicago," and it's especially appropriate because I'm sitting at the airport waiting to go to the (hopefully not) Windy City right now. I'm seeing my son's show, "Illinoise," that is based on the Sufjan Stevens album, this week at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, so that has been in my heavy rotation.
This won't surprise you a bit, but I'm incredibly excited to hear the DMO take on Dear You. It's a record a lot of people had a lot of strong thoughts about.
Over the past week - I hate to admit that I’m still rather stuck on REM hahahaha! But, I also listened to some Kristin Hersh, Throwing Muses, Lorde, and Daughter.
My daughter discovered (or rediscovered?) Lana del Ray, and I absolutely approve!
My youngest son is now stuck on Pompeii by Bastille, with a little Weezer mixed in.
1) Lots of Sonic Youth, as I'm reading Thurston Moore's book.
2) J Mascis new release. Many, many times.
3) Wild card: Saw the early Nic Cage movie "Birdy" for the first time this past week, then randomly saw a vinyl copy of the soundtrack for sale at a local book/music shop. Coincidences clearly need to lead to purchases. It's full of instrumentals by Peter Gabriel.
4) One more: Having fun with Austin Lucas' "Reinventing Against Me!"
Oooh!! So down for Peter Gabriel instrumentals! One CD my first husband and I fought over in our separation was the soundtrack for The Last Temptation of Christ - full of Peter Gabriel instrumentals and just fabulous! I ended up with it because I brought it with me into the marriage! LOL
Had an incredible Saturday at my Local Record Store. Took 50 records to trade in, and while I was there found stunning NM OG copies of Robert Johnson's King of the Delta Blues comp from 1961 and Son House's 1965 album Father of Folk Blues up on the wall. I'd heard the Johnson before, and it's obviously great, but the Son House hit me like a ton of bricks. His version of 'John the Revelator' and his own 'Grinning in Your Face' are songs I've heard in other places, like Gov't Mule, but hearing these versions was something else entirely. Despite my loud protests, the shop owner took $50 off my bill, too, which is reason #378 why you should support your local B&M.
They sound great. The reissues have reignited my interest in the band's music. I loved these when they were initially released, but I'm rediscovering them again, especially 'Milk and Kisses.' I've been enjoying them on the road in my car.
The Last Dinner Party released their debut album “Prelude to Ecstacy” on Friday and it is utterly fabulous. I was lucky enough to see them play live last Tuesday. Those girls are incredible!
Whoa, very cool that you saw them live! They're coming to the US, but nowhere near us. I haven't loved a new band this much since I learned about Fontaines DC and Pillow Queens.
Spotify - Pachyman, Freddie King, Manu Katche's album Unstatic, and a new band I just discovered, The Dip.
On my turntable I'm spinning Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's fantastic 5 disc set Live/ 1975-85.
I just picked up tickets to Khruanbin for June 11. Saw them in Austin several years ago as they were just starting out and really enjoyed the show, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they've grown on stage as a band.
The new J Mascis is wonderful, thx for getting this on my radar Kev and I totes agree - sonically it's perfect for the stage of life we are at right now. I let Spotify keep going after the album finished and it brought up his cover of "Fade Into You." So fantastic! Sometimes algos really do work a dream!
Did not listen to much music over the weekend. But I did go shopping at two new to me record stores and found a mint copy of Bikini Kill, Reject all American. I am can't wait to get home later this week and take it for a spin.
Looked for New Order and did not find any....two down and so many more to go.
I didn't know Rival Sons were an ongoing entity, but I used to see them play around Nashville some in 2013/14. They sorta reminded me of a mix between The Cult and wha a modern Led Zeppelin might might have sounded like - this was of course before Greta Van Fleet came on the scene. Met the guitar player at an event and we had a nice conversation about the state of rock music at the time.
I’m still recovering from Grammy-itis: the condition that causes inflammation in the upper frontal portion of your brain, resulting in Taylor Swiftnous of the nervous system.
Still quite big here, on the nostalgia circuit, so I gather. There are a few bands of that ilk. Carter USM, Wonder Stuff and Jesus Jones (to name a few) Pop Will Eat Itself were perhaps the biggest but they changed their sound to more industrial and what can I say about Clint Mansell. Moved to Hollywood and never heard of him again.....
Also, I just watched an excellent documentary about the German avant-garde group CAN (CAN and Me), and they're also on my list. A review is coming out tomorrow.
I'm sharing the link to the documentary. CAN was one of the leading German avant-garde bands, much in the vein of early Frank Zappa and the Velvet Underground. They were quite influential, popular, and beloved:
What a brilliant Substack! I've been out of the loop with writing but I'm getting back into it now, writing specifically about new music (and doing a little weekly Spotify podcast too). So cool to see that you've already established a big community. Will be following eagerly!
Here are the 7 songs I included in my Recent and Decent podcast this week :)
That is a fantastic playlist! Strachan's not still managing anywhere is he?
I listen to Chris Molanphy’s podcast “Hit Parade” and he recently did an episode on CBGB and some of the early acts that came out of the club’s formative years.
One of the featured bands was Talking Heads, and I found myself diving head-first into their early material. There’s definitely some gems in there.

Lol. Awesome.
Interesting! I'll have to check that out. My longtime favorite from Talking Heads is "Psycho Killer," and I'd definitely be curious to hear a modern take on that one.
For sure!!
Psycho Killer
Hi Kevin. I appreciate yr interest. Will get back to you shortly.
Hi Matt. I appreciate yr interest. Will get back to you shortly.
There sure are! Any new favorites in particular?
Nothing that stands out head and shoulders above the rest, though "Love ---> Building on Fire" feels like it has replay potential on my lists.
1.) Returning to Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music...one of the all time best records (imo).
2.) Stanley Road-Paul Weller. This one I’ve always been aware of but only now is it starting to click with songs like ‘Time Passes’ and ‘Wings of Speed.’
I return to Stanley Road and Wild Wood once a month as a restorative.
BC Camplight - The Last Rotation of Earth has worked its way back into my ears https://bc-camplight.bandcamp.com/album/the-last-rotation-of-earth
Bosnian Rainbows and some Mars Volta.
Nothing wrong with Pavement of Malkmus! I still haven't made it to The Smile's record. maybe today?
Lots of Tom Waits (his complete on Spotify on random to keep me entertained)… one new discovery was an amazing Michigan-based guitarist - Laurel Premo… she popped up on some instrumental playlist I was listening to and gripped. Here’s her fab complete: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6l6dq4NtpWVBk6vZonfj21?si=H0qEyK36SxO9cGil9EkwCg&pi=e-6OyvjllYTXWm
Always a good time for Tom Waits! Premo's a new for me, and will check her out shortly!
Thanks so much for including me on your list this week, honored!
Of course! It's an awesome track.
Yeah, it does seem so. 🤣 They cut a wide swath with their touring.
Gotta hop on that new Ty Segall (guy is relentless in his output). Stoked to see him play in May!
I've been diving into Dicks lately.
The band, I mean.
I'm not sure how I missed these guys for like 35 years, but they have some truly amazing songs.
I do like fish and chips!
That makes two of us, as that's a new band for me too!
Do you like any of their songs? I really like maybe 4 or 5 of them, and then i think maybe 10 or 15 other songs are well worth listening to.
Good question! I meant really new, as in I hadn't heard of them until you mentioned them.
Oh man. Check out Anti-Klan (part 1) and Kill from the Heart right now and let me know what you think!
On the lo-gi/garage side, had this in heavy rotation since Bandcamp shouted them out. Especially "slinger style" https://mirandaspatula.bandcamp.com/album/march-chant
Mostly wandered a... bumpy, somewhat older road:
* Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
* King Crimson - Discipline
* Tool - Undertow
* Red Hot Chili Peppers - Mother's Milk
and finally, the mellow of Catch A Fire (R.I.P. Aston "Family Man" Barrett) followed by a heap of MC5 & solo Wayne Kramer R.I.P.
Must be a ripple in the freak wave. I just did a post yesterday on my newsletter for Boredoms-Super Are.
A band you could listen to the entirety of your life snd still find new things to hear in them. What a totally unique band that really don't get talked about enough.
Nice write up. An adventurous label really needs to reissue their material on a quality vinyl pressing.
Great write up! For anyone scrolling the comments, here's the link:

I know people can be fussy about which era of RHCP they like, but on the whole, I think this one is my favorite.
You can't really go wrong with any of their stuff with Frusciante on guitar. Maybe their last two albums are a bit bloated, but there are some gems to be found.
Goth Babe's new album "Lola" is absolutely great, 💯 recommend! https://open.spotify.com/album/2nkuEWWUZLf4tLMZrns03r?si=caw3XncxSciQh0uxjweF7Q
Also, I have quite a few things to catch up on. Now I'm going trough Joy In The Journey's "Alphabet Soup Week 05: Artists Filed Under C", many fire songs in there ❤️🔥
P.S. what a damn fine playlist, Kevin! Happy to discover especialy "Lust" by Debbie Christ
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. :)
Right?! Sooo many good ones!
There are several names on your playlist I'm not familiar with so I look forward to digging in. Love that Waits cut. The version on Letterman (I think) with David Hidalgo on guitar was a blast.

Shades of Bowie and Roxy Music? Sign me up!
Me too please!
That Letterman version (I think) is the one I tripped across, and got me listening to it quite a bit over the week.
MADRA is an early frontrunner for me too! Have not made it to TORRES yet, though.
Thank you for adding the grassy knoll to your playlist! I really appreciate it.
You bet! It's fantastic.
Happy Monday(s)! Devon Gilfillian’s latest album, “Love you Anyway”, was spinning on my turntable this morning. The creamy/translucid vinyl looks pretty (until you start battling with the static, that is), but the music is 🔥
That's a new name for me. Adding it to the list!
His first album, “Black Hole Rainbow”, is also very good (you might actually prefer it). Hope you dig!
I See Red by Everybody Loves an Outlaw
I'm not sure I've ever heard this one. Will check it out shortly!
Listens from this past weekend that spring to mind:
Boredoms - Super Are (just that song, on repeat like 12 times)
Hiroshi Yoshimura - Green
Don Slepian - New Dawn
Harry Mudie Meets King Tubby - Dub Conference #1 & #2
Jon Hassell - The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound
Gravesend - Gowanus Death Stomp
Love the Tom Waits' "Chicago," and it's especially appropriate because I'm sitting at the airport waiting to go to the (hopefully not) Windy City right now. I'm seeing my son's show, "Illinoise," that is based on the Sufjan Stevens album, this week at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, so that has been in my heavy rotation.
Hopefully, it was a great flight and awesome show! Please keep us posted.
Prep for new Dig Me Out episodes we’re recording this week on
- Jawbreaker - Dear You
- Bang Tango - Psycho Cafe
This won't surprise you a bit, but I'm incredibly excited to hear the DMO take on Dear You. It's a record a lot of people had a lot of strong thoughts about.
Started listening to music again after a longish break when I only listened to podcasts and audiobooks.
I recently discovered Fisherman’s Woman by Emiliana Torrini and it blew me away.
Another amazing song I just came across is Cold Reactor by Everything, Everything.
It’s been a great few weeks, as far as music is concerned.
It really has been, hasn't it?
Over the past week - I hate to admit that I’m still rather stuck on REM hahahaha! But, I also listened to some Kristin Hersh, Throwing Muses, Lorde, and Daughter.
My daughter discovered (or rediscovered?) Lana del Ray, and I absolutely approve!
My youngest son is now stuck on Pompeii by Bastille, with a little Weezer mixed in.
if you're going to get stuck on a band, one could do a lot worse than R.E.M.! Throwing Muses too, for that matter.
Bruce Langhorne
1) Lots of Sonic Youth, as I'm reading Thurston Moore's book.
2) J Mascis new release. Many, many times.
3) Wild card: Saw the early Nic Cage movie "Birdy" for the first time this past week, then randomly saw a vinyl copy of the soundtrack for sale at a local book/music shop. Coincidences clearly need to lead to purchases. It's full of instrumentals by Peter Gabriel.
4) One more: Having fun with Austin Lucas' "Reinventing Against Me!"
Thanks for asking. Travis
Oooh!! So down for Peter Gabriel instrumentals! One CD my first husband and I fought over in our separation was the soundtrack for The Last Temptation of Christ - full of Peter Gabriel instrumentals and just fabulous! I ended up with it because I brought it with me into the marriage! LOL
Loving the new Mascis. I really don't understand the lukewarm reviews it's getting. Not sure what people were expecting?
I'm digging the latest from Billy Joel: https://youtu.be/hexZ5hwia08?si=uIU-JMLu5DwgfT2N
Same here! Tbh, I didn't think we'd ever seen anything new from him.
I wasn't sure either. I still haven't seen him in concert and have to one.
Had an incredible Saturday at my Local Record Store. Took 50 records to trade in, and while I was there found stunning NM OG copies of Robert Johnson's King of the Delta Blues comp from 1961 and Son House's 1965 album Father of Folk Blues up on the wall. Have you seen It Might Get Loud, where Jack White talks about Grinning In Your Face being one of has fav all-time songs?
Haven't seen it! I'll give it a look this week. Thank you.
Right on! And yes, always support your local shop!
Cedar Walton: Blues For Myself
Art Blakey: Coolin'
FSOL: Lifeforms
Marconi Union: Weighless
David Bowie: Stage
Cocteau Twins: Milk and Kisses and Four Calendar Cafe
Love it. You're probably way ahead of me, but did you see that those Cocteau Twins records have recently been re-released/remastered?
I'm on it!
Newish:
J. Mascis, What Do We Do Now
The Paranoid Style, The Interrogator
The Smile, Wall of Eyes
Old:
Fear, The Record
Husker Du, Zen Arcade
Hall & Oates, Voices
Grant Green, Sunday Morning
(Note: I did not listen to Fear and Hall & Oates on the same day)
Haha. My first thought was that I'd like to hear a Fear cover LP of Hall & Oats tunes.
Lol. I mean, you could've though.
Voices is great. I have a banged up copy of it somewhere at the house. I really like 'United State.'
Nice! I'd love to see them play; their 'Live at RBC Echo beach' was one of my fave records of last year.
This song by velvet-voiced B.C. resident M.E. Netzke is worth a listen: https://open.spotify.com/track/2gVqcyiQvfC3dbFdVEWAhX?si=90befe4e8a244ed0
Not familiar with M.E. Netze, but I'm digging it so far!
McCartney - Band on the Run (Underdubbed Mix)
The Bardic Depths - What We Believe in Stories
The new J Mascis is wonderful, thx for getting this on my radar Kev and I totes agree - sonically it's perfect for the stage of life we are at right now. I let Spotify keep going after the album finished and it brought up his cover of "Fade Into You." So fantastic! Sometimes algos really do work a dream!
That's a great take, and you're right! It's great for where we are these days.
Did not listen to much music over the weekend. But I did go shopping at two new to me record stores and found a mint copy of Bikini Kill, Reject all American. I am can't wait to get home later this week and take it for a spin.
Looked for New Order and did not find any....two down and so many more to go.
Thanks for looking just the same!
Who knows about Zagar & Evans? https://open.spotify.com/artist/55IyYO6fmYpYw6Nd4YF7bw?si=UICIIw_nRzijU_qEw3oKCg
Also, I've been assigned to interview two bands
Crosses
Rival Sons
Any of you amazing music lovers know anything about them? I'd love some insight.
Those are all new to me, but hopefully someone here can help! I'm assuming this is for Mxdwn?
yes - they seemed to hae pegged me as the Rock writer - hmmm
I didn't know Rival Sons were an ongoing entity, but I used to see them play around Nashville some in 2013/14. They sorta reminded me of a mix between The Cult and wha a modern Led Zeppelin might might have sounded like - this was of course before Greta Van Fleet came on the scene. Met the guitar player at an event and we had a nice conversation about the state of rock music at the time.
I’m still recovering from Grammy-itis: the condition that causes inflammation in the upper frontal portion of your brain, resulting in Taylor Swiftnous of the nervous system.
Here's to a full/fast convalescence. Time and good music are the only cure.
Some classic grebo from Ned's Atomic Dustbin and the album Are You Normal, which I got on vinyl a few months back but never got round to spinning.
https://open.spotify.com/album/2grx6MZQYbH1Z6TLQXbRPg?si=q-UWYGkgRyqBGHjnv53QWw
Yes! Neds are one of my favorites. I always wished they'd gotten a little bigger here than they were. I guess we weren't ready for 'em yet.
Also, I just watched an excellent documentary about the German avant-garde group CAN (CAN and Me), and they're also on my list. A review is coming out tomorrow.
Oh nice! If you think of it, please drop a link here for everyone.
Hi Kevin,
I'm sharing the link to the documentary.

Watch Me by Biig Piig
Kids by KEG
wondering why by yeemz
Crossing Guard by Model/Actriz
The Water by Indigo De Souza
Tuesday by mary in the junkyard
Go Dig My Grave by Lankum
I'm glad you're here. Welcome! And congrats on getting back into writing!
A Place To Go When You Need To Hide - Rose Alaimo
Moon Nay - S/T
Joni Mitchel - Apple Essentials
Late to the comment party on this one, but Wrest is my answer. Showcased them in today's post, but three songs just isn't enough.
