Happy Halloween, and a warm welcome to those of you joining us over the weekend. It’s great to have you here with us! Below is a bit of what I’ve been spinning this week. A few of these were suggestions from you, and as always, I’m grateful for the picks. Keep ‘em coming!
More importantly, what’ve you been listening to? Got something we should all be checking out? A band we have to hear? Share it below!
Just tried a new album (combining some old EPs) by Guided by Voices, as recommended by Matt Berenson's newsletter for music obsessives, starting with 'My Impression Now' (as Matt suggested) and, unfortunately, I loved it! Until today I'd been blissfully unaware of GBVs work, but now I've got album's worth of stuff to work my way through, any thoughts?
My friend discovered the origins of the "acid house" genre - which was accidentally invented by an Indian musician in 1982, 5 years before the term "acid house" was even coined.
Hey, the links work for me. If the issue persists, check out the link I've shared in the latest Hello Universe, this album was my recommendation for the week 😀
Thanks for including Gold Tides! Went to their new movie premiere last night, which was a pretty damn cool idea to have them play songs from the new EP along to this film they’ve been working on for two years. After hearing it all summer, I have to say the live version of “Satanas” is so fun! Hopefully we can get them further out on the road next year!
Also, haven’t had a chance on the new Carly Rae - you digging?
Yeah, I've really been digging their sound- I didn't realize they were making a film as well! It wouldn't be the first time I missed something totally obvious.
The new Carly Rae is fantastic. It's pure pop and really well done, IMO. Those are 2 sentences I never imagined myself writing.
Just finished making a last minute Halloween playlist 🎃🍬🎶 and had lots of fun digging out from memory long forgotten songs like „Change (in the House of Flies)” by Deftones from „Queen of the Damned” movie, or „After Dark” by Tito&Tarantula that makes me wanna watch „From Dusk Till Dawn” once more. Happy Halloween, Kevin!
Listened to America Music Club's "San Fransisco" last night, as per your suggestion. Not bad! Reminded me of a few other bands from the era that I can't manage to put my finger on. It made me think, too, about how much time goes into loving an album.
This morning, I'm back into the Beatles's White Album, though. "Why don't we do it in the road?"
Coraline soundtrack! It’s kind of spooky, kind of whimsical, overall a great album. I’m also listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers. From Pretty Little Ditty to By the Way.
Every Halloween, I break out some oddball stuff: Screaming Lord Such, Roky Erickson and the Aliens (The Evil One is a great Halloween album), The Cramps, and of course, Zevon. Those songs are as important to me in October as Donde esta Santa Claus is to me in December.
Nice! At this point, I'm pretty sure playing Zevon is a legal requirement. Not for nothing, the algorithm gods put his last appearance on Letterman in my feed last night. Well worth watching again.
BTW, if you're in the mood for Halloween/Spooky season stuff, here's 2 playlists:

I've got two:
1. You're in for a treat-GBV is consistently awesome.
2. You've got your work cut out for you. To say Robert Pollard is "prolific" is putting it lightly. Their catalog is deeeeep.
Do I have a great find for you today or what!

I wound up checking it out over at Hello Universe, and played it while I was doing some writing. Great stuff!
Alvvays and Tammy Wynette
An excellent combo!

Happy (belated) Halloween! I hope you guys had a fun night!

Thanks for giving that a spin; I'm glad you liked it!

Rediscovering Blue Cheer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZFlU0cPS2M "Peace of Mind", and it's NOT the Boston song!
Like Lone Justice, and love the New Order remix. Brings back the New Wave feeling, but heavy as hell.

That is a heartbreaking episode. But I love Letterman for doing it.
In my car CD player is Hideout by Antenna
Nice!
