Happy Monday(s)! Welcome to each of you who joined us over this past week! You’ve landed at what was recently described as “the nicest place on the internet.'“
It’s great to have you here.
For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation:
What caught your ear this week? Find anything good while crate digging? Made a mixtape lately? Are there any upcoming releases or shows you’re excited about?
So whatcha got? Share your thoughts in the comments!
P.S. Keep an eye for a community survey later this week!
Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning. If you haven’t, you really should.
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange + Blonde.
Childish Gambino - “Awaken, My Love!”
Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures. Pour this molten sludge directly into my ears so they can encased - forever and always - in one of the greatest rock records of the 2000’s (my opinion, man). Joshua Homme, Dave Grohl, JOHN PAUL JONES.
There is a potato quality video on YouTube of SSSC on Jimmy Fallon, I won’t repost because its hard to watch/listen. Too bad these guys flamed out so quickly…
Ah, bummer that it's not better. I saw it live and then found a decent video again a few years ago, but that's the kind of stuff that gets taken down so quickly.
I’ve listened to an 80’s band a lot this week that I’ve never run into: 17 Pygmies. Need to read up more on them, but really enjoying their first three EP/LPs. Would love for some enlightenment on them.
On Bandcamp, I picked up "Let's Go Dancing: Said the Firefly to the Hurricane," a tribute to Kevn Kinney's songwriting. Like most tribute albums, not everything works, but the title track by Patterson Hood is an absolute ear worm, and Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit contribute "Look What You've Done to Your Brother," among others. Also, Isbell's "Live From Welcome to 1979," a 2016 RSD release that also is on Bandcamp, has a great mix of covers and originals.
Mustard has been listening to “Songs of my Land” by Chiyomi Yamada. They discovered this album on Bandcamp on its release date and have fallen in love with it. It is such a beautiful record. https://chiyomiyamada.com/album/songs-of-my-land
I discovered Mission of Burma last week. 🤦🏻 Spent the week obsessing over Vs, listening to the Life the Record podcast and re-reading their section of Our Band Could be Your Life.
Yessss! I remember reading your right up because you referenced that REM show in Madison which I had a bootleg of and listened to over and over again (20 plus years ago).
Going to have to hunt down some performances from that Feb. night!
I really like Mission Of Burma, saw them live around the time of their first album and they put on a great show. They were also super nice to me and my brother when they found out we had ready had their first EP so they gave us free copies of a new single they just completed which was super generous.
Omg thank you for stories - teenage dirtbag!!!! I’m in love with this version!!! Wheatus is going to be playing at a small venue here this summer and I can’t wait!! Teenage Dirtbag is a song that’s always been in my rotation!!
The Ghetto Brothers album led me down a rabbit hole in which I discovered William Onyeabor, particularly the compilation “Who is William Onyeabor?” released on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label in 2013
Saturday was mostly honeydew list and I was feeling trepidatious about my travel on Sunday. With all of the news about plans losing a plug, a landing wheel, failure to control the airplane in a power slide at the end of the runway... I was not excited for my plane ride on Sunday.
With that said, I spent the first 4 hours of my travel listening to my heavy metal playlist and sleeping on the airplane. I then switched up and moved to my dark and gothic playlist for the remaining 3 hours of travel.
I focused him on mostly a lot of metal from 1975 through 1988. My gothic playlist is mostly 1978 through 1990.
Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Metal Church, BOC, Riot, Grim Reaper, Krokus, Motorhead, Lizzy Borden...you get the picture.
I did a deeper dive into Dicks. I've decided that "Kill from the Heart" and "Lifetime Problems" are two of their best songs. I was incredibly into old school punk, and I kind of missed these guys 30+ years ago.
The new Norah Jones: 👏👏👏. The much anticipated arrival of Judas Priest’s ‘Invincible Shield’ does not disappoint. Yard Act, ‘Where’s My Utopia?’ Is fresh and different. ✌️
That new Cloud Nothings song sounds great, have not listened to them in a minute, but that makes me excited for the new album. Hell yeah, Wipers.
The new Pissed Jeans album is really good, imo. That band is locked in to some tight punk groove, solid noisy guitar, and always love the sardonic lyrics.
Remaster of Dry Cleaning's Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks EP.
Revisiting Mazzy Star while listening to the Bandsplain podcast episode on them! So Tonight That I Can See, and She Hangs Brightly had permanent spots in my 5-disc changer in my nightly sleeping mix while I was in college 😂 Rhymes of the Hour from Among My Swan (and the Stealing Beauty Soundtrack) is such an incredible song.
Usually they are! Even when they were on kicks of classic rock I didn’t particularly like hahaha!
My favorite was last year when my youngest was stuck on playing “One Step Closer” by Linkin Park after the other 3 were dropped at the Jr High and High schools and it was just me and him on the way to the elementary - and he was not liking school so much. We sang the hell out of that song in the drop off loop 🤣 (so funny because he ended up teaching me the few lyrics in the song I didn’t know)
Some good stuff came out on Friday - Bolis Pupul's Letter To Yu, Mutual Benefit's demos, Astrel K's The Foreign Department, Moor Mother's The Great Bailout, Jean Dawson's New Age Crisis - which occupied my listening while I continue to obsess over Faye Webster's latest. Also got to see Them Airs on Saturday afternoon as part of the New Colossus Festival and they were even better than I hoped, gloriously chaotic, artful, and funny. Programmique was before them and quite impressive, especially if you like Wire, Gang Of Four, PiL, and their descendants. Finally, did a little record shopping on Sunday and discovered a brilliant, visionary folk album from 1970 called Jaime Brockett 2. Really worth seeking out!
The new Big Big Train album is excellent for lovers of long, beautiful, prog rock songs. I’ve also been listening to David Gilmour - ‘On an Island’ for my next post, and that led me to appreciate ‘About Face’ all over again.
The tenth anniversary of the We Are Scientists album TV en Francais is upon us and ahead of a deluxe reissue in May, they have put out Don’t Blow It as a single on streaming services featuring the demo and a new instrumental version. It’s been on repeat this weekend.
I’ve also been listening to Dulcinea by Toad the Wet Sprocket which is a seriously belated discovery and I’m a little bit in love!
Oh, and ahead of their debut album, I think this is by far the best track from The Howlers so far.
I kind of randomly put on Private Revolution Saturday night, just because, and then found out he died the next day. Must've been some vibes in the universe
No new songs to report, but I have been tripping over "Like A Version" videos on YouTube lately. Is this something that everybody knows about and I just spazzed? Good stuff.........
This week....I've been listening to The Kills latest record, the new Brittany Howard EP, classic Ann Peebles and a personal mixtape of Gothic/80s/Synth/Indie Love Song Vibes featuring YYY, Echo & The Bunnymen, GGOOLLDD, The Furs and The Bangles
Been listening to a good bit of Roy Orbison recently. Looking forward for Aurora's new single, Some Kind of Skin, which will come out next Wednesday. Hopefully a new album will be coming out soon!
Great list! And if you liked that Wipers track, you'll love a lot of their other stuff.
Street Sweeper Social Club - Street Sweeper Social Club + The Ghetto Blaster EP. Bangers; non-stop.
One Day as a Lion - One Day as a Lion. Zac de la Rocha and Jon Theodore (current QOTSA drummer). Delicious!
St. Vincent - MASSEDUCATION (the new single - Broken Man - infected me).
Mohini Dey - Mohini Dey. Can we get a collab with Thundercat??? Absolutely rips on the bass: https://youtu.be/OJTXqHxt_UU?si=LTuFfMU2XGovux8w
Post Animal - Levitation Sessions https://youtu.be/WRPoXjnBoEU?si=h-Tb8mRGFWe2OoA5
Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today. Their whole discography is worth exploring, one of my favorite bands.
A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step.
Puscifer - Money Shot + Existential Reckoning. I am going to both SESSANTA Red Rocks shows next month.
The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention + Wall of Eyes. I have a sickness and it continues:
Idles - Crawler and Tangk. I have a playlist that is just these four records called “Crawling Light Eyes, Tangk!” Glad i decoupled last.fm last year so I can never really know how deep this goes. Proof: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/crawling-light-eyes-tangk/pl.u-55D6pK2clZ4B6
New:
Meatbodies - Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom. Yes, yes, yes, and yes.
Have you seen the video of SSSC doing "100 Million Curses" on late night TV? I can't remember which show it was -- they were great.
Found it--not great quality but still an awesome performance. Their cover of "Paper Planes" also killed.
Protomartyr also one of my fav bands! Good to know their is a new Meatbodies! Saw them at a small club several years ago, was blast.
Love Euphoria Morning.
I have somehow still never heard Them Crooked Vultures. Should probably fix that soon.
What a list! Really dig Them Crooked Vultures as well. Have fun at the shows!
SSSC is great. I’ve been listening to The Coup a bit this week as well.
Dig it. :)
I’ve listened to an 80’s band a lot this week that I’ve never run into: 17 Pygmies. Need to read up more on them, but really enjoying their first three EP/LPs. Would love for some enlightenment on them.
That's a new name for me. Hopefully, someone will see this and shed some light on the band!
Oh, this sounds awesome! I'll have to check it out.
You really must...
Mustard has been listening to “Songs of my Land” by Chiyomi Yamada. They discovered this album on Bandcamp on its release date and have fallen in love with it. It is such a beautiful record. https://chiyomiyamada.com/album/songs-of-my-land
Last week was all about:
- Norah Jones - Impeccable, as always. We're traveling to Red Rocks this summer to see her with Hurray For The Riff Raff opening.
- The Pogues - I was in the house band for a lovely Shane McGowan tribute on Saturday so I spent a lot of time with their songs last week.
- Jay Bennett-era Wilco - Inspired by watching the documentary "Where Are You, Jay Bennett?" on YouTube. Highly recommended.
- The Last Dinner Party - Prelude To Ecstasy. It's going to be tough to dislodge this from the top spot on my annual list.
Looking forward to digging into the playlist, as always. Have a great week, everyone!
Love Norah Jones! That show is quite a pairing. I'll be that's gonna be incredible.
I discovered Mission of Burma last week. 🤦🏻 Spent the week obsessing over Vs, listening to the Life the Record podcast and re-reading their section of Our Band Could be Your Life.
The audio version of Out Band Could be Your Life is worth checking out. So many great guest readers.
Oh nice, I will definitely look into it! Thanks for the tip!
Love MoB. I was extremely fortunate to see Clint Conley play Academy Fight Song back in February on the Michael Shannon/Jason Narducy REM tour (which I wrote about here: https://open.substack.com/pub/marcusmeeks/p/shannon-and-the-scorchers?r=1842ie&utm_medium=ios)
There are a couple of YouTube videos of the performance, and I recorded some of it too. Happy to share
That is a heck of a story! So, so cool!
Fantastic!
Love Mission of Burma. If you have all your windows open, don't be surprised to hear 'Academy Fight Song' coming down the street.
Windows are open! Crank it!
It’s been update time for my playlist, so these were the chosen:

Yes, it was on Reflect & Relax Cafe # 55 :). I really like this version too.
Thank you, Marc!
I couldn’t get enough of a couple older releases over the weekend.

Definitely a rough week for aviation. I'm glad you had a good trip, and safe travels back!
2nd Ave records says "Hello"
Hello hello!
I hope you found some good stuff while you were down there!
Found a lot of really cool stuff, just nothing I'm going to drag home on the airplane. But there's always tomorrow and I may change my mind.
Brian Eno and old Stones!
Yes!
2nd mention of Norah Jones this week. That's a sign that I've gotta get on it!
I like...
* Kim Gordon - The Collective
* Lunchbox - Pop and Circumstance
* Helado Negro - Phasor
* El Perro Del Mar - Big Anonymous
New LP soon, only singles for now...
* Tiger Island - 'Looka Looka Looka'
* Blitzen Trapper - '100's of 1000's...'
Just finished listening to the new Kim Gordon in full. I really liked it. It's on-brand, but new at the same time, if that makes sense.
Loving the new Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds single ‘Wild God’ which landed last week.
More upbeat than the last couple of albums, and sounds like it will be epic live.
A real appetite whetter for the album due to follow in August.
Right on! Nice to "see" you here again, btw. What're you working on these days?
That new Cloud Nothings song sounds great, have not listened to them in a minute, but that makes me excited for the new album. Hell yeah, Wipers.
The new Pissed Jeans album is really good, imo. That band is locked in to some tight punk groove, solid noisy guitar, and always love the sardonic lyrics.
Remaster of Dry Cleaning's Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks EP.
Wipers rule. I didn't know Dry Cleaning had an remastered EP out. Thanks for getting that on my radar!
Actually started collecting recent music discoveries in this playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGLwYe0y7rYXfKGAu2laXTc3RsdwFTJ1g&si=rFvu2xcaihp9Hq0d
Also checking Jacob Collier's Djesse Vol. 4
And my daughter’s new obsession is Lana Del Rey, and I’m not arguing with her choices. Enjoying her turns for songs on the way to school.
Your kids have fantastic taste! The morning drives sound like a lot of fun (or as fun as school drives can be, anyway).
I just listened to the Blondie Bandsplain. It's so good! The Mazzy Star is next in my queue.
So many great episodes!!! The Mazzy Star episode is amazing!
Can't wait to listen!
Last week was a concert bonanza. Secured tickets for:
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Kamasi Washington
Kurt Vile & The Violators
Air playing Moon Safari 25th anniversary tour
Been vibing with St. Vincent’s “Daddy’s Home” and listened to MGMT’s “Congratulations” for the first time in years.
Amazing!I don't know how you manage all these killer shows, but I love hearing about them!
not having kids or responsibilities helps lol
lol
The Clash - Sandinista! Sides 7 & 8 https://youtu.be/BkPB644qG8I?si=fIcj3rtSDLANjDPq
You know I love me some Wire, so that's definitely a band I'll check out ASAP!
Newish:
Mary Timony, Untame the Tiger (highly recommend)
William Tyler & Impossible Truth, Secret Stratosphere
Faye Webster, Underdressed at the Symphony
Old:
The Band, Music from Big Pink (found a 1973 pressing at one of my record stores)
Nick Lowe, Jesus of Cool (been looking for this on vinyl for a while and found a good copy!)
Charles Mingus, The Saint and the Sinner Lady (read a Substack about side B on this album, so I had to listen to my LP of this fantastic recording)
Talk Talk, Spirit of Eden
Those are some great finds, and it's always a good time for Spirit of Eden.
For Mingus, was it this one? https://therunoutgrooves.substack.com/p/touch-my-beloveds-thought-while-her
Yep
I am enjoying your playlist, good picks Kevin.
I had a good week of listening:
Neil Young - Harvest
Between The Dead and the Dreaming - ST
The Bankes Brothers - In Waves
Quiz Show - Flotsam
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God
John Hiatt - Bring the Family
Ludovico Einaudi - A Cielo Abierto (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Thank you, Norman!
The new Big Big Train album is excellent for lovers of long, beautiful, prog rock songs. I’ve also been listening to David Gilmour - ‘On an Island’ for my next post, and that led me to appreciate ‘About Face’ all over again.
End It
The tenth anniversary of the We Are Scientists album TV en Francais is upon us and ahead of a deluxe reissue in May, they have put out Don’t Blow It as a single on streaming services featuring the demo and a new instrumental version. It’s been on repeat this weekend.
I’ve also been listening to Dulcinea by Toad the Wet Sprocket which is a seriously belated discovery and I’m a little bit in love!
Oh, and ahead of their debut album, I think this is by far the best track from The Howlers so far.

Nice! If you're interested, Abandoned Albums had Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket on for an interview. It's well worth your time.

I was listening to a lot of music from 1966! I've been writing a memoir focusing on every year of my life and creating a Top Ten song list for each. https://open.substack.com/pub/danpal/p/a-top-ten-memoir-1966-everythings?r=lru5s&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Thanks for sharing the link with us. Subscribed!
Thanks Kevin! I hope you enjoy it!
Yes, THE WIPERS! More Pacific Northwest bands please!
You got it!
Caught a few minutes of The Tragically Hip's "So Hard Done By" on the radio. A Canadian classic. https://open.spotify.com/track/1sGaMnUDYtJ9NMeN7NGfoY?si=01b305466dac4bef
Excellent cut. Music that moves me and lyrics that confuse me. What else do I need?
Happy Monday(s)! I was spinning Will Downing's debut album this morning. So lush.
Right on!
We were both in Cars mode today, weren't we?
Wilco/Summerteeth - Sounds great for being 25 years old
Neko Case/Middle Cyclone - This just turned 15 and I've fallen back under its spell
Luna - Listening to it all ahead of seeing them this coming Saturday night
Indeed we were! Summerteeth too, for that matter.
It's just a dream we keep having...
Spotify - Nazz, Richard Holmes
On my turntable - The Ventures' Hawaii Five-O, and Uriah Heep's Best of Part 1.
Always a good time for The ventures! I have a copy of that record, but it's days are probably numbered.
I've been enjoying some new recordings by the Tender Engines from Australia, a band that used to be on the fabulous Summershine label:
https://tenderengines.bandcamp.com/album/cynara-canyon-ep
How about a 9 minute version of Eight Miles High - https://cheersquadrecordstapes.bandcamp.com/track/eight-miles-high
No thank you :)
Over the Rhine - Changes Come. Live album from their tour supporting their double album Ohio. "this is our little postcard from the edge:"
Judybats - Native Son, and I have you to blame for that 😜
I haven't decided if I *like* it yet, but I can't stop *listening* to the new Kim Gordon album.
Last night was all Karl Wallinger. Goodbye Jumbo is a desert island disc for me.
Ha! Sorry/not sorry about the Judybats. :)
I'm with you on Goodbye Jumbo. 'Way Down Now' is one of my all-time faves. What a loss.
Compeltely new to me! Is it like it sounds (cover versions)?
Yes, covers.
And band interviews
Adoring The Howlers this week! Their new single, Cowboys Don't Cry, has got some of the sweetest steel pedal guitar I've heard.
The latest songs from Pillow Queens – Like A Lesson and Gone – are also hitting the spot.
Oh, that sounds great. I like steel pedal guitar. I'm on it!
Memphis Slim Rainin' The Blues. Really dig the new bonus track "Daylight Savings Time Is So Dumb It Takes It 2 Hours To Watch 60 Minutes." ;)
Been listening to a good bit of Roy Orbison recently. Looking forward for Aurora's new single, Some Kind of Skin, which will come out next Wednesday. Hopefully a new album will be coming out soon!
