On to the music:
For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation.
Now it’s your turn.
What caught your ear this week? Any luck crate digging? How ‘bout at yard sales? Any upcoming releases or shows you’re excited about?
East Coast friends! On Repeat favorites, Dot Dash have an upcoming show, and you should be there! Dot Dash is a band that’s very good at what they do, and what they do is deliver commercial-grade jangle pop.
On Sept. 24, they’re opening for Marky Ramone (!) at the legendary Black Cat in D.C. Gig info is here.
Some wonderful songs here - all 7 in fact. (I know some of the artists, but always good to be reminded when they have new music out.) Have subscribed to you.
The album "The Universal Fire" by Jeffrey Foucault was just released. Waiting for the vinyl to ship but listening to the digital download all weekend. Also was prodded by a Substack reader to revisit Jason Molina in his groups Songs:Ohia and Electric Magnolia Co.
I know I'm repeating myself from my own playlist that I posted today, but I don't care! Getting the word out! I'm listening to this new EP by It Thing:
Kacey Musgraves - Her cover of Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club" live in Boston from Saturday night's concert. If I could share video here I would! It was phenomenal.
Thank you! I’ll be honest. I was never much for scrapbooking as a kid or adult but I really love this idea of parking and memorializing a music moment. That I can totally get behind. Thx for posting the link!!🔗
I did a lot of comfort listening this weekend, which involved most of my Menzingers vinyl. As for new stuff, The Airborne Toxic event has a new record out and I gave that a first listen. I'm diving back into new music discovery today.
Podcast research. It's not the kind of album I'd listen to for pleasure -- it feels to me like he's trying a little too hard, but I can see why both Paul and John named Harry as their favourite new songwriter back in 1967 when the album was released.
Love the Oceanator record -- and MJ: wow. Need to try Beeef. Hinds - I still rank "Bamboo" in my top 10 songs of the last 15 years. But they haven't quite lived up to it since. Some moments, but then, like you said, they're gone. Hoping they've improved live.
It's a wee bit more expansive sonically than their last album. "what does it sound like?" was an instant standout for me; sounds like late summer/early autumn. 😌
David Gilmour - Luck and Strange. A pretty easy and calm listen, but it lacks that magic that Gilmour is known for on his guitar. However, "Between Two Points" and "Yes, I Have Ghosts" are very good. I reckon if Romany (who sings on these tracks) ever drops an album it'll be received well.
Leprous - Melodies of Atonement. Another recent release, having dropped on the same day as Cacophony. This group is a veteran Norwegian progressive metal/rock band, having released 8 albums prior to this. This I enjoyed a lot more than the Gilmour record; it has heavy beats throughout and a vocalist that isn't trying to sand your ears with insane growls and indecipherable lyrics.
No revisits this past week - I went on a trip to Baltimore, and thus didn't have much time to look at stuff that I have listened to before.
Loved Fishbone the moment I heard them. Still one of my all-time favorite bands. Can’t believe you saw Truth and Soul performed live! I bet that show was epic!
I've been listening to Soul Asylum lately. I've always thought they were an underrated band who were more than just Runaway Train. There's an album on streaming platforms where they played a high school prom in ND after the Red River flooded back in...the late 90's I think. It's just funny to think that a band who had a huge hit single was playing a prom in North Dakota. I don't mean to disparge the good people of Grand Forks, but you're not wear I think of bands going to.
Well said on Soul Asylum being underrated. "Somebody To Shove" is an all-time banger for me and has been on nearly every running playlist I've made. Hang Time is a great record, too.
100% an underrated band. Someone recently made the comment that they never come up in converations about great bands from Minneapolis, and I just thought, "man, they're right!"
Random listening this past week (mainly for writing) have been Oasis "Definitely Maybe," Inspiral Carpets "Life," The Softies "The Bed I Made" and the new single by The Manic Street Preachers "Decline & Fall."
That's awesome! Yeah, there's something about the sinister bass and the blanket of clouds over the endless mountains and pine tress that ties the whole vibe together.
I'll be moving out to Vancouver shortly and I can't wait to explore the PNW.
And again, for anyone reading this: if you're only showing up on Mondays, you've been missing out on a great project Sam & I are doing! Get caught up and join us! Part 5 drops tomorrow!
I've been crazy busy on all fronts the last few weeks so I haven't had time to listen to as much new music as usual. Last week was about:
* Fontaines DC - Romance. I still don't love it except for "Favorite," but I'm going to keep listening to see if it grows on me.
* U2 - Pop - As I mentioned recently, I'm listening to the Into The Heart of U2 podcast and it's fun to revisit each record after their discussion. Pop is an underrated gem and its messiness and ambition are features, not bugs.
* Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball - An all-time classic. I would listen if Lanois produced an album of garage truck sounds.
* Bremer/McCoy - Kosmos - A Danish duo with a unique spin on late night, wind-down-the-day jazz. They're in what I think of as the GoGo Penguin-adjacent camp along with Neil Cowley Trio, Mammal Hands, and some others.
Looking forward to digging into the playlist and everyone's recommendations. Have a great week!
I'm in the same boat with the new Fontaines DC record. I could listen to "Favorite" all day long. The rest is good, but hasn't quite grabbed me the asame way...yet.
At the moment I'm listening to Mallie's Electric Playlist featuring covers of Devo's "Girl U Want." It's one of my favorite Devo songs. I had no idea there were covers!
Aside from that, and in a totally different genre, I really like the Lauren Watkins/Sheryl Crow song "Set My Heart on Fire." It's got a familiar sound that I find very comforting! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umLTm-NAxLw
I have a song that’s I found on my local radio station a few years back. It’s called “Ain’t got it like that” by Earl St. Clair. It’s a soulful song about if money wasn’t a worry. Another R&B song that will make you laugh if you’re not offended. It’s called Candy Licker by Marvin Sease. It was a jukebox favorite around the south. I found it from a coworker. The production is good, but the lyrics are x-rated.
Hank Williams Jr Hank Williams Sr ~ Their Greatest Hits Back To Back
Greaseball Melodrama - Gearhead Records comp / review: punk lives!
Robbie Krieger ~ The Ritual Begins At Sundown (2020) / review: a fantastic jazz experience! Not too noodly, not too smoothly. And a cover of Zappa's Chunga's Revenge.
Most retail play:
What Is Hip? Remix Project from the Warner Bros. Vault (2004)
AM Jams get beated up. Doobies, Summer Breeze, Maria Muldaur, Dream Weaver original tunes get triphopped by v/a with a minimum of glitch. Meat Beat Manifesto pops Tower of Power and Whip It! gets smoothed by Ramin Sakurai of Supreme Beings of Leisure
I've been knee deep in playing shows the past two weeks and now learning a long list of tunes for some upcoming weddings I'm playing, so my playlist has been all over the place.
Japanese garage punk rockers King Brothers have just finished up an Australian tour. I've seen them on two tours and they are still one of the wildest and greatest live bands I've evern see. Turbo charged and unhinged. If they land anywhere near you, go see'em. You won't regret
I’ve been spinning Whitney’s compilation “I Will Always Love You - The Best of Whitney Houston”. I own original pressings of the individual studio albums but I was positively surprised with the sound quality of this compilation. The remaster was nicely done. I mention this for the benefit of readers who might not be die-hard fans but would like to get Whitney’s biggest hits on decent sounding vinyl at some point.
Thanks for this! Looking at the track likst, it's got almost everything. Good to hear they've put some oomph into the production too; that's not always the case with a Best Of LP.
Yes, absolutely. The early European pressings of her studio albums are mind-blowing in terms of sound quality, but this Best Of has very decent sound, much better than other compilations.
I've been back in 1973, listening to songs that made the AT40 that year. I needed to go back to that innocent time. They weren't really big on "genre" back then, so the the mix is surprisingly delightful. Sly and the Family Stone in the same list as Jim Croce, etc.
Also "Bad Moves" by The Bones of J.R. Jones is on repeat. The more I hear it, the more I want to hear it again.
Great to see you’re into English Teacher and Crumb at the minute too! I’m listening to loads of Lemon Twigs and Jockstrap rn, plus a new band I’ve discovered from a gig here in NYC—The Baxbys. A fun band for sure highly rec
This week I’m having a strange and obscure flash back to the “Solitary Man” collab album between Georgio Moroder & Joe Esposito. It’s like stepping into a Time Machine to 1983.
Will do, and thanks for the rec.!
Bee Gees - How Deep is Your Love
Nothing wrong with "enthusiastic" singing!
You just made me realise that it's way too long since I played Spirits Having Flown.
Heck yes.
Here's my weekly playlist. https://open.substack.com/pub/recentanddecent/p/recent-and-decent-37?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=1z6rnh also listened to a fair bit of early Alt-J this weekend.
Thanks for the link, Matt!
Some wonderful songs here - all 7 in fact. (I know some of the artists, but always good to be reminded when they have new music out.) Have subscribed to you.
Awesome! Glad you liked them 👍
The album "The Universal Fire" by Jeffrey Foucault was just released. Waiting for the vinyl to ship but listening to the digital download all weekend. Also was prodded by a Substack reader to revisit Jason Molina in his groups Songs:Ohia and Electric Magnolia Co.
That Foucault record is fantastic. Thanks!
Will check out the new Foucault record ASAP!
Osees. Prepping for seeing them live.
Nice! That show is gonna be awesome. Would love to see them!
I know I'm repeating myself from my own playlist that I posted today, but I don't care! Getting the word out! I'm listening to this new EP by It Thing:
https://open.spotify.com/album/7MOfeWEtFmVl4WcztnZhj8?si=ZX400YQsQcuAyqEnwi0ScQ
Very X-ray Specs, very lo fi, kinda proto-punk I guess. I'm loving Roman Baths especially.
This is awesome! Reminds me of Le Tigre. Cheers!
yes!!
That description makes it sound like my kinda music!
even though I misspelled X-ray Spex and couldn't go back and edit it??
I knew what you were trying to say. :)
Kinda drives me batty that we can't edit comments while using the app.
Kacey Musgraves - Her cover of Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club" live in Boston from Saturday night's concert. If I could share video here I would! It was phenomenal.
Right on! I liked the scrapbook you made of her show.
For anyone scrolling the comments, you can check out Beth's recap here: https://bethlisogorsky.substack.com/p/kacey-musgraves-deeper-well-a-musical
Thank you! I’ll be honest. I was never much for scrapbooking as a kid or adult but I really love this idea of parking and memorializing a music moment. That I can totally get behind. Thx for posting the link!!🔗
New album by Dummy had my attention all weekend!
try Portishead "Dummy"
Oh yes, that’s a total classic album in my world.
I may or may not have listened to "Minus World" like 5x in a row yesterday.
Making breakfast for the kids and this one just popped up. It’s totally perfect!
Perfect timing!
Daniel Norgren
I did a lot of comfort listening this weekend, which involved most of my Menzingers vinyl. As for new stuff, The Airborne Toxic event has a new record out and I gave that a first listen. I'm diving back into new music discovery today.
I hear you!
Always a good time for a little comfort listening!
Harry Nilsson's Pandemonium Shadow Show
Podcast research. It's not the kind of album I'd listen to for pleasure -- it feels to me like he's trying a little too hard, but I can see why both Paul and John named Harry as their favourite new songwriter back in 1967 when the album was released.
https://open.spotify.com/album/2ixS5kGItY2fOQN7yYE6sk?si=rhFsiDhZSSKnBhxVogDe5g
Also still Nick Cave's Wild God, which feels like it's already a classic.
https://open.spotify.com/album/0TRr4JGEPJ4eAb5QKRaunf?si=vQcpaDqiTNmcSsxmQuq6mA
🤐
I still haven't been able to give Wild God a close listen. Hoping to fix that soon.
Definitely a late night listen.
Some pretty good finds at a record show this weekend:
Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run (1973 UK Pressing)
Deep Purple - Stormbringer (1974 Pressing)
Sly & The Family Stone - There’s A Riot Goin’ On
Wilson Pickett - The Best Of…
Whoa, great finds. I believe the technical term is 'haul'.
I believe you're correct! :)
Those are some great adds to your collection!
Soooo much NEW & SHINY
* The Heavy Heavy 'One Of A Kind' - Glorious throwback to 70's psychrock in all the best ways. Wow!
* Beeef 'Somebody's Favorite' - High quality guitar, pop rock.
* The The 'Ensoulment' - Two listens and I'm not certain how good it is yet.
* MJ Lenderman 'Manning Fireworks' - You know.
* Molchat Doma 'Belaya Polosa' Early Depeche Mode + Kraftwerk, but darker. Heck, you try writing cheery music in Russia!
* Peel Dream Magazine 'Rose Main Reading Room' - Lowkey refuge for deep thinking. Sufjan Stevens + Belle & Sebastian.
* Hinds 'Viva Hinds' - Playful & raw but like Fontaines latest a bit more polished. I fear it may be a bit forgettable?
ALMOST NEW & CERTAINLY SHINY
*** Oceanator 'Everything Is Love And Death' - Urgent, hushed, dynamic, crunchy. AOTY list... it's a contender.
* Ynys 'Dosbarth Nos' - Quirky, shiny, adventurous popart rock sung in Welsh/English.
* Dominic Angelella 'God Loves A Scammer' Do you like Mtn Goats or Silver Jews, you'll likely love this.
Didn't know there was new Beeef, so thanks for that.
Soooo much indeed! I think almost everything here is new to me, so thank you for that! Lots of cool stuff to dig through.
Thanks for Peel Dream Machine, they are new to me though clearly not to others. I hear some bossa nova in there?
I am waiting for the right moment to listen to the new The The... I mean, there can't be any rush to do so, right? Not after THAT wait.
The Go! Team's Whammy-O on YouTube with accompanying official video, which is brilliant.
This is the kind of song I’m going to dismiss, then listen to again, then become infatuated with by the end of the week.
That was my experience.
I'm pretty into the new slenderbodies album, 'the sugar machine': https://open.spotify.com/album/2ychxoIHL3thzPwFtd6LC2?si=YJ-kLaLxSB6sgXCTJNtrhA
It's a wee bit more expansive sonically than their last album. "what does it sound like?" was an instant standout for me; sounds like late summer/early autumn. 😌
I'm on it! Thanks for the rec.
Two new (to me) releases listened to this week:
David Gilmour - Luck and Strange. A pretty easy and calm listen, but it lacks that magic that Gilmour is known for on his guitar. However, "Between Two Points" and "Yes, I Have Ghosts" are very good. I reckon if Romany (who sings on these tracks) ever drops an album it'll be received well.

No revisits this past week - I went on a trip to Baltimore, and thus didn't have much time to look at stuff that I have listened to before.
New Gilmour was news to me. Will give it a spin and probably About Face as well because, why not. Thanks!
RZA - A Ballet Through Mud
Fishbone - Truth and Soul
R.L. Burnside & The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - A Ass Pocket of Whiskey
I think they were awesome together. Never understood the hate.
Wow. Have not thought about A Ass Pocket of Whiskey in a minute. I remember having "shake 'em on down" on repeat for ages.
It’s still so good, dude. Pour yourself a drink next chance you get and crank it.
Truth and Soul is an all-timer. I feel very fortunate to have been able to see them play this record live.
Loved Fishbone the moment I heard them. Still one of my all-time favorite bands. Can’t believe you saw Truth and Soul performed live! I bet that show was epic!
It was a midday set at Riot Fest, and they still killed it. I would love to have even ¼ of Angelo Moore’s energy!

My favorite by the band!
“Closer to the Stars” is so good.
The Bed I Made is fantastic!
Just got back from Vancouver and here's been the west coast vibe:
- War on Drugs - "I Don't Live Here Anymore"
- Air - "Moon Safari"
- Moses Sumney - "grae"
- Massive Attack - "Mezzanine"
- Yves Tumor - "Praise a Lord Who Chews..."
- Boards of Canada - "Music has a Right to Children"
- Stereolab - "Emperor Tomato Ketchup"
Thanks to Kevin, I've also been refamiliarizing myself with the first two Van Halen albums and some Bad Brains.
Kevin's List: https://thekevinalexander.substack.com/p/wax-ecstatic-the-100-greatest-albums-part-four?utm_source=substack&utm_campaign=post_embed&utm_medium=web

I'll be moving out to Vancouver shortly and I can't wait to explore the PNW.
You're in for a great time. I miss it everyday.
I hope the principal said yes!
Now, this is a mix!
Always a good time for Bad Brains and VH as well!

Always liked Pop. Chances are good I'd like it more now the way my tastes have evolved, so I should revisit.
It has aged well! I like it much better now than when it was released.
I had no idea, either! I was not expecting a Robert Palmer rendition.
Butthole Surfers
Nice!
Clan of Xymox was a horrifically underrated goth band....been listening to them a lot lately.
That's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time. I'll have to dive back in.
Glad to see Jalen Ngonda on the list - wrote about this record for our site: https://3albums6oldguys.substack.com/p/needle-drop-movie-song-classics-fishbone. Need to spend more time with Mount Kimbie.
When I'm not listening to MJ Lenderman on repeat, been spending a lot of time again with the Syd Barrett discography (and still Toumani Diabate). Wrote about them in our latest piece -- https://3albums6oldguys.substack.com/p/the-6ogs-celebrate-more-ogs-jack
Otherwise been really immersed in the new Dummy record (https://notdummy.bandcamp.com/album/free-energy) and the first track from the coming Blue Zero album (https://bluezero.bandcamp.com/album/colder-shade-blue), which is as entrancing as any new shoegaze I've heard lately.
Thanks for the links. The new Dummy record is fantastic!
Thanks, Andy. I'll see if I can find both!
MJ Lenderman

Maybe you should give MJ Lenderman a listen.
I might have to now!

I’ve been really digging this band called Hello Mary who I saw open for Silversun Pickups last this year. This song 0% is pretty rad

Thanks, Chase! Added to the list to check out today!
I've been knee deep in playing shows the past two weeks and now learning a long list of tunes for some upcoming weddings I'm playing, so my playlist has been all over the place.
Today I've been learning:
The Meters - Cissy Strut
Eric Clapton - Change The World
Estelle and Kayne - American Boy
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Childish Gambino - Redbone
Bill Withers - Kissing My Love
Amy Winehouse - Valerie
Luther Vandrose - Never Too Much
Funkadelic - Standing On The Verge
I'd love to be at a reception where Luther Vandross gets played!
I enjoyed David Gilmour's new album Luck and Strange, as well as some Billy Joel and an assortment of other music. https://wordpress.com/post/weatheredmusic.ca/7005
New singles from Girl Scout and Gem County (excited for that album!) and this one from Desperate Journalist

Loving the Grian Chatten track, Stranger, from the Hinds album, VIVA HINDS. The rest of the album is not bad but I’m not sold yet.
I continue to be a little obsessed with Orville Peck and Charly Bliss - both excellent records. Also enjoying the EP Give An Inch by Laura Jane Grace.
Also, I really should mention this, which has turned up as a bonus track on the Royel Otis album

Did not know there was new stuff from Girl Scout! That's great news.
Enjoying a new artist by the name of Jaguar on Mars (hint). One of the more exciting artists that I've heard in a long time.
I'll keep an eye on my podcast feed!
I wrote an accompanying piece for it, but I will be quite curious to hear what you think.

I was still listening to the albums I just posted about here: https://open.substack.com/pub/shooflypie/p/no-name-oyster-time?r=4iw9&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true
After that, back to the new MJ Lenderman, Tamar Berk, and Gillian Welch & David Rawlings albums.
I still need to check out that record by The Damnwells. Your write up sold me on it.
Cool. Let me know what you think.
I picked up a pretty cool old school reggae LP over the weekend and have spun it a lot.
The In-Crowd - His Majesty Is Coming (1978)
Sweet! Old school reggae? I'm here for it. I'll have to see if I can find it and give it a spin.
Quiet Riot - Bang your Head and Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast 80's metal classics.
Hell yeah!

Got back into Touché Amoré this week, now waiting impatiently for their new album. I'm a sucker for lyrical hardcore, always.
