Welcome to another edition of For The Record, a semi-regular good ol’ fashioned link drop, and benefit for paid supporters of On Repeat. If you’d like to join us, we’d be thrilled to have you!
This week we’re discussing Robbie Robertson, two reunions I’m excited for, an underrated rap scene, and record reviews.
All of that and a lot more! Let’s get right into it.
I first came into Robbie Robertson and The Band the way I think many kids my age might’ve: through Columbia House.
We all loved to get 12 tapes for a penny but often forgot about the part where they’d send us a tape a month after that. If we didn’t like it, we could send it back. If we did, we bought it. If we forgot to return it, we also bought it. I had an almost perfect record of forgetting to return these on time, and one of them was The Band’s self-titled record. I had no idea who they were, nor was I interested in finding out.
Mostly, I was pissed that I would have to pay for something I didn’t want.
For months, it did a great job of taking up space in my tape rack until, one day, it got caught up in one of my purgings. My uncle happened to be visiting and saw the pile. When I told him I was getting rid of them all, he picked that one up and explained why I was making one of the biggest mistakes of my life1.
They were great storytellers!
They played with Dylan!
They’re fantastic musicians!
And did I know that Robbie Robertson was in the group?
