After almost 19 years, my oldest son and I finally have something in common.
It came in the form of an incredibly inside-the-park text, an answer to an equally obscure question. None of you might be able to read this—and taken in isolation, it’s pretty mundane—but it was a watershed moment on an oppressively sticky morning this week.
Me: Why do you send flights back-to-back spinners to RHI?
Him: We get 6-7 cans for RHI every day, so we need to run two1.
I should be clear here; there’s no drama, no rift to mend, or anything like that. We get along great but are two very different people. And that’s what we want, right? We’re supposed to raise our kids to be their own people and equip them to take on the world. I get it. And I think my wife and I have done a decent job of that (at least I hope so, anyway).
But I'd be lying if I said I never wished for something we could share. For every parenting book telling you how to (or not) do it, there are 10 commercials with dads and sons doing something together.

You can distill my interests into roughly three things (four if you count coffee, five if you want to add Gizmo to the list): music, soccer, and airplanes.
