Certainly a top pick, desert island disc for me. Was A fan of Talk Talk from their 1st album and their evolution pushed my musical tastesl. Thanks for the astute and accurate appraisal.
PS. While I appreciate their trajectory is quite different and heck, they're really not similar... regardless Talk Talk make me want to hear The Antlers.
Thanks for mentioning The Antlers. I do see a loose similarity between them and Talk Talk. Both create strong emotional resonances in their songs. I remember first hearing Hospice, and being gobsmacked. I think it’s time to go back to The Antlers discography this weekend.
Steve G mentioned the emotional resonances both bands create, which was spot on and a part of what connects them for me. I went back and listened to Hospice and Burst Apart and it's also the breath/space both bands embrace, allowing a note to extend or an instrument to transition from one to another, while the listener is often not certain where it's going. Certainly the overall production is very different along with the vocals, though they both... whisper a fair bit.
Both bands are/were driven by a central creative force and generally their albums, especially the latter ones for TT, are seamless, meant to be played in their entirety and not single driven.
The Antlers are developing in reverse as thier albums are getting a bit more accessable, but certainly not as poppy as Talk Talk's early work. For me Burst Apart is where they most overlap.
That's just my two cents - it was really just... moods they both create.
I appreciate your dive into this deep disc. I have been growing into more ambient music since the pandemic. The Necks and Sigur Ros are two of my frequent spins. World's apart from each other in most ways, but the idea of "sound" driving their aesthetic, which i can absolutely hear and love with this album, is what I find mesmerizing. I can't wait to explore more. Thank you.

Their last album Green To Gold is superb and especially resonates when played in the Fall, more so if you live in the Northeast.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you liked it. I'm genuinely curious how this made you want to listen to The Antlers?

I want to listen to this album and it also this review has me fearing the album!
It's definitely a wild ride, but nothing to fear. I'd love to know what you think of it!
An astounding record.
Fantastic album. They really took their sound to a new level with their last two albums.

Good timing. I revisited the album yesterday. It’s a masterpiece (as are all Talk Talk albums).
They really are, aren't they?
