Love this post, Kevin. And LOVE John Hiatt. I've had the privilege of seeing him a couple of times, and wish I could upload a couple pics to this comment. Coincidentally, I've been re-watching Treme, and last night I was on the episode with John Hiatt performing, "Feels Like Rain." Disturbing, heartbreaking, epic... Happy Friday!
I've only seen him once, and have waiting to go again ever since! Not for nothing, this is the 2nd or 3rd mention of Treme I've seen this morning. Maybe I sign I should watch and see what I've been missing?
I love songwriters like Hiatt, who have songs pouring out of them for decades. He must have 25 albums of original material by now. I love half a dozen of them including this one, "Bring the Family," etc. The last album of his I played a lot was "Same Old Man." Never seen him live. Which I regret.
25's gotta be close. Bring The Family and Perfectly Good Guitar are two of my faves. The latter because it was the first record of his I heard. He puts on a heckuva show--well worth your time if he goes out on the road again.
I became aware of Hiatt with Perfectly Good Guitar and quickly went back in the catalogue to earlier albums. "Slow Turning" is great. It's been too long since I've listened and should change that fact soon.
This science nerd from an immigrant family actually did the road trip thing--twice coast-to-coast, and a there-and-back on Route 66. Yes, I can attest to AM radio being a window into the America most of us coastal types can't imagine. It's how I knew, almost three decades in advance, that 2016 was coming. I never heard much Hiatt, so will have to check out your links. I got by on Willie Nelson, the Talking Heads and long stretches of silence, with just the wind. And lots of bug splatter. Speaking of which, have you noticed, there are almost no bugs any more? It's a bit scary.
Thank you! My favorite Hiatt era, too. He couldn't miss.
Hiatt has one of those unique voices and lyrical styles that are instantly recognizable.
100%. The way he tells a story-- and the way he sings them- instantly draws you in.
Such a great album - will queue it up today.
Right on! Always a great day to play some Hiatt.
As usual, you come through with a home run!! Love, love, love...did you know I LOVE...this song!!! My favorite verse:
“Time is short and here's the damn thing about it
You're gonna die, gonna die for sure
And you can learn to live with love or without it
But there ain't no cure”
Sums up the disease of alcoholism and to just get on with it by learning how to live one day at a time.
Kevin, 🫵 ROCK!!!
I love that verse too! Every day's a win.

I have noticed that! I used to have clean my windshield quite often. Now, not so much...
