A bit of self promo, hope that's ok. Our first album, We Wish You Health is very much linked to the seasons. We have a couple of songs about the sun and summer. https://horsesofthegods.bandcamp.com/track/deiseil and https://horsesofthegods.bandcamp.com/track/midsummerset we also have a Substack newsletter.

Walking On Sunshine for sure. Sunshine On Leith always gets me wailing along despite my awful voice.

Nice playlist!

Thank you! I don’t know if it’s true, but I’ve seen it in a couple of places that Katrina from Katrina & the Waves gets something like $1M a year in royalties. I should probably Google it, but I kinda want it to be true.

Several whacks with a pool noodle for excluding The Beach Boys from a sun and summer Playlist! May Mike Love write all your summer songs (and not Brian Wilson!) for that glaring omission! But, Sirius/XM satellite radio just started their summer-long Beach Boys-dedicated channel (Ch. 104, for those connected), so you're saved from the dreaded noodle!

Plus, L.A.'s fabulous The Last went very mid-'60s/BBs-evocative with their 1979 "Every Summer Day," and while not available (any longer) on Spotify, it is on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYwZ2Kxmm0E

Well done, Kevin, and a cool playlist, despite my coffee-deprived rant (my Panera, for some reason, is sans java this morning)!😱

Lol. There should probably be some Beach Boys. My problem is that the songs I like aren’t exactly “summery.”

Well, the good news is, I got'cher back, as the kids would say (I guess the kids say that....what do I know?)! Conversely, when I hear the clarion call for "summer" or "sun," I knee-jerk right to those musical lads from Hawthorne!🌞🏖

I posted this about the song On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever) before we were overtaken by the smoke. Should've seen it coming. https://open.substack.com/pub/jodiemeynwrites/p/the-pianolist-on-a-clear-day?r=lzbdm&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

“Walkin’ On The Sun” by Smash Mouth was the first to come to my mind, followed by A-Ha’s “The Sun Aways Shine On TV”. One from my youth years and another from my childhood.

Skies are much better here in Ohio today, so I hope yours are too!

Here are a few songs that have a strong tie to summer for me:

Multimagic - Sunshine

Catherine Wheel - Judy Staring at the Sun

Buffalo Tom - Summer

The Primitives - Summer Rain

The album I most strongly associate with summer is Bon Iver’s S/T from 2011.

Love this! 100% awesome playlist. I especially like the LEN and Roy Ayers inclusions. Got all excited and created a SUN WORSHIP playlist of my own.

Here in Denver, we worship the sun 300 days a year, but it has been rainy and overcast more than usual. Which is actually ok, we need the water and a break from all of the sunshine warping our minds.

Song killer tracks on there! “Warm Sunrise” feels like, well, like it. The cover art is awesome as well. Did you take that?

Thanks, I realized I duplicated the Sly track from your playlist after the fact, but couldn't take it off, too good. WHAT, how did that Miter track get on there!?! Someone at MiterCorp will be fired for this... Thanks, the cover art is actually a Dall-E AI image. It took some serious coaxing but I really like this image. I thought I would be using AI for most of the album covers for this project, mainly for productivity, but that hasn't turned out to be the case.

I nominate Wind Chill Factor (Minus Zero) by The Boomtown Rats. I like mixtapes, I have boxes of them collecting dust in the attic. I had moved on to mix CDs, they are collecting dust in my work tool room. Then we moved on to the age of streaming and mixes are stored in the cloud. I have one question to pose, do you create the mix from memory or from searching on Genius. My son and I are putting together a mix and it is from our memory banks and nothing else. That is the way I did it in the age of mixtapes, so I still do some old school. Some, the memory banks aren't as keen as they used to be. So, from your mind Kevin, or from a search engine? Community, memory or search engine?

Kevin Alexander's avatar

In a case like this, memory.

For ones like our weekly discussions it’s a combo of memory, reader suggestions, and new music discovery.

When you guys are done, will you be posting the mix(es) on your blog?

Norman's avatar

Yes, I will post them. Thanks for sharing how you gather songs for your mix tapes.
