On to the music:
For those of you who are new, we kick off every week by sharing what we’ve been playing.
The playlist below is some of what I’ve had in heavy rotation. This week was a blend of brand new, new to me, and a couple of old favorites. And I finally (finally(!) got to see GBV, so they‘re on here too.
Now it’s your turn.
What caught your ear this week? Any luck crate digging? Some yard sale finds? Are there any upcoming releases or shows you’re excited about?
So whatcha got? Share your thoughts in the comments!
I tend to listen to XTC's singles more than anything, but when I revisit full records, I'm blown away all over again by how great they were. So much brilliance in such a relatively short time!
In between getting my head blown off by the Cleveland band The Great Iron Snake and the first mixes from my next Rick Ray Band record, I found a Sahel band called "Etran de L'air" and a dark Eastern Bloc band called Ploho.
I see you have Yo La Tengo on the playlist this week... welp, I've been listening to Sleepyhead (hint) who used to share a rehearsal space with Yo La Tengo. You can hear about that on Wednesday. :)
Oooh, "Supervixen" is such a cool opening track. I was front row for a 2018 Garbage show here in Atlanta—they still sound perfect and go hard as ever.
I've stumbled across a track from 2013 that's a perfect, subtle marriage of funk and electro pop: "Jasmine - Demo" by Jai Paul. I can't *not* dance to it. Immediate playlist material.
And SF dominates the year, even from the past. This 90s garage emo-ish record from henry's dress was just re-released. Catching me like Everyone Asked About You did last year - https://henrysdress.bandcamp.com/album/bust-em-green
And was thrilled to see that the artist behind my favorite record of 2024, Heems, just dropped his second of the year. Not quite as innovative and intricate production wise, but the lyrics are that much more heartfelt: https://heems.bandcamp.com/album/veena
ROMANCE!!!!! Really loving the new Fontaines DC album. Now even more excited for the Autumn tour. Also really enjoying Forever by Charly Bliss and the new single from Gem County
Thanks for including us on the playlist! Being in great company is a happy way to kick off my week.
Last week was about:
* Fontaines DC - Romance - I loved them before they blew up (I was fortunate to see them in a small club in Columbus) and it's fascinating to see their evolution. I'm not sold on the new one yet, but I also need to give it closer listens.
* Wrest - Everything's Nothing Forever Again - I can't remember where I heard them first -- it was either here or via Mallie Hart -- and I dug them right away. Big Frightened Rabbit vibes without being derivative. One of those records that just sets a mood in a way that is hard to do.
* Gingersol - Any fans here? They were active in the early 2000s and I still love them. They had a string of records -- Nothing Stops Moving, The Train Wreck Is Behind You, and Eastern -- that were fantastic in that melancholy pop, Westerberg-meets-Tweedy kind of way. Start with "Help Push The Car," the lead track on Nothing, and I bet you'll be hooked. Main songwriter Steve Tagliere has a new record out on Bandcamp, which sent me on a roll with them.
Have a great week, everyone. Looking forward to your picks!
Lots of stuff I’ll need to check out. Glad you gave Starflyer ‘59 a shout. Really enjoying them. You’ll see I had both Fake Fruit and Chime School on my list of 5. I agree both take a bit of time to get in to. But they get there. I don’t think chime school approaches neutrals or The Umbrellas or even lightheaded in terms of what Slumberland has released this year. But still very good. And that’s a high bar.
Fontaines D.C. - Romance. Here’s the Thing; if Skinty Fia was full of Irish Gaelic meditations, Romance is full of lyrics about dreams in standard English. Both albums are really good, although Romance seems lighter and happier. And dreamier.
Geordie Greep - The New Sound single Holy,Holy. I was not ready for Black MIDI to be over and done with. First single with Geordie solo is promising, looking forward to October.
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE - YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING. I LIKE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS. SO DOES SPIRT OF THE BEEHIVE. SOMETIMES, WHEN LOOKING UP SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, YOU ACCIDENTALLY PLAY ‘SPIRIT OF RADIO’ AND HAVE A RUSH AIR DRUMMING JAM BEFORE YOU LISTEN TO THE RECORD YOU MEANT TO PLAY. SotB = always a weird ride, this new record is no different.
Chat Pile - God’s Country + Cool World. Aggressive. Loud. Necessary, from time-to-time.
Black Midi - Schlagenheim + Cavalcade + Hellfire. Sad to see this group disband. 3 excellent records full of bizarre stories and odd time signatures.
Jockstrap - I Love You Jennifer B. Cinematic/dramatic.
Toadies - No Deliverance. So Long Lovey Eyes sets the tone for this record. Dayuuuuuum; the Toadies were really onto something.
Eagles Death Metal - Death by Sexy. Fun record!
Toadies - Rubberneck turned 30. I Burn is one helluvva an album closer…
Shuffling: Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle. Soundgarden (thx to 3Albums6oldguys for the Bandsplain reco!). Tropical Fuck Storm - new live album is out 9/27. The Drones. TV Priest. Idles.
This will be my first post here and I'm kind of afraid for a couple of reasons. Both have to do with the artist I am going to post a song of/by. The artist is Ryan Adams, so of course I am a little worried this post will be inundated with many comments of what a terrible person he is etc etc. To that I say, I can separate ther person from his music. The other worry is that this is just so old but here again , just listen: Ryan Adams in Oslo, 11-10-06 I See Monsters. https://archive.org/details/radams2006-10-11.sbd.flac16. I hope I did everythibng okay. I have been listening o this whole show all week. thanks.
Welcome! I'm glad you're here! I know some people have strong thoughts about Adams the person, but I also believe you can spearate the art from the person. We like what we like, right? I happen to like his version of Taylor Swift's 1989, and love, "New York, New York."
The new Jack White has not left my turntable for a few weeks now.
Had pretty good luck in the bargain bin at the record store on Friday. Picked up some Jimmy Buffett, Pine Hill Haints, and CSN on the cheap. Going to spin those this morning while I work.
A few tracks off African Dub Chapter 3 and some King Tubby I recorded from original vinyl onto a cassette in the 80s, and some '60s reggae' on another old tape. Desmond Dekker's Fu Manchu, The Kingstonians' Hold Down, and Peculiar Man by The Gaylads were some of the highlights on that one.
Nice! I didn't discover King Tubby until about five years ago. I feel like I can pick anything random from his discography and it's always good. "Meets Rockers Uptown" is my fave, probably a Desert Island Disc for me at this point.
I've been basshunting again this week, and had Beefeater recommended to me by a fellow bass player, so doing a little bit of a dive with them and then with Red Fang and then Government Issue.
Yep, i'm in on the new Fontaines Dublin City as well. It's excellent. Always fun to see a band you love take it to the next level. It is too bad that you won't see them in the small venues anymore, but you can always brag that you did. :)
Thrifted: Kiss ~ Smashes Thrashes and Hits, Elton John & Leon Russell ~ The Union, and current retail play Willie Nelson ~ Night and Day (a whole cd of Willie without words!).
Most played this week: The Lightning Seeds ~ Sense
I can’t stop listening to the Elvis “Memphis” box set. It’s glued to my streamer. And my mouse is broken. Or at least that is what I telling people who say “you must be kidding”
I’ve given the new Fontaines DC a few listens and I’m not sure yet but it’s growing on me.
As someone who never listened to Shelby Lynne before, I’m enjoying her latest
Enjoying Joan As Policewoman’s latest single and looking forward to the upcoming album
Been spending time with Smashing Pumpkins latest and it’s growing on me. Closer to their earlier form than anything else they’ve released in the last couple decades. I want to love this record. By the end of the year I might
Lighthouse by Francis of Delirium has been getting a lot of spins over the last week
A few weeks ago someone posted here about the band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. Glad I checked them out because I’m LOVING The Future Is Our Way Out!!
Last but not least I’m digging the GIFT album Illuminator
During the week, I had to fly Sydney-Perth and back in two days. This is one of my favourite playlists for journeys like that. Rock and/or roll from Elvis to Screaming Females; Gymshorts to the Seeds and of course the Scientists.
Thanks to our 100 Best Albums project, Kevin's selection of the Flying Burrito Brothers's "The Gilded Palace of Sin" finally pushed me to give that album a spin. It's amazing, and that inspired me to relisten to "Grievous Angel" by Gram Parsons and "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by the Byrds.
I think I'll give the "To Live and Die in LA Soundtrack" some more listens as well.
Oasis - Don't Believe The Truth. Continuing on my deep dive through their discography ahead of something happening tomorrow at 8 am (which was posted on Oasis's social media accounts and echoed on Liam and Noel's accounts), we reach Oasis's 2005 album, which out of all of the albums I've listened to thus far, is the weakest one. But it's not without its moments. "The Meaning of Soul" is a quick, upbeat tune akin to "Songbird", and "The Importance of Being Idle" is one of Noel's finest in the 2000s.
Cream - Disraeli Gears. A good slice of bluesy rock. Ginger Baker's drumming is on point throughout, although the vocals are a bit lacking in some spots. "Outside Woman Blues", a cover of a song by Blind Joe Reynolds, is a bit of a hidden gem here.
Eternal Crypt - Divine Snowfall (https://youtu.be/zWZCQd04_ZU?si=1z9aAiGcarFN-OWH). Eternal Crypt is a heavy metal band out of Rochester, NY. A friend of mine from high school plays keyboards for this band, and well... this track rocks. Go take a listen :)
I've been spending some time with the new Chime School, Damnwells, Quivers, Futurebirds, and Wishy albums, as well as celebrating Elvis Costello and Jeff Tweedy's birthdays with their music.
Chris Issak - Wicked Game
Good Morning from the Left Coast.
Here is what is in my ears:

BEST COAST!
For bands I knew on the first list, I went 0-for-10, so I'll be checking that one out ASAP!
I threw on XTC - Skylarking for the first time in a while. "Big Day" ran particularly true for me. Wonderful album top to bottom.
I tend to listen to XTC's singles more than anything, but when I revisit full records, I'm blown away all over again by how great they were. So much brilliance in such a relatively short time!
I only have Senses Working Overtime and it's in my 'favourites' stack of 45s.
Love this record! "Grass" just feels perfect for those woozy summer days, even if the lyrics...don't exactly match that.
In between getting my head blown off by the Cleveland band The Great Iron Snake and the first mixes from my next Rick Ray Band record, I found a Sahel band called "Etran de L'air" and a dark Eastern Bloc band called Ploho.
https://youtu.be/JSHd5mm7qNI?si=kpNUQGBn2R1AAH_w
Etran de l'air is a remarkable band - wrote about them recently: https://3albums6oldguys.substack.com/p/the-60gs-celebrate-other-ogs-neutrals
Right on! When is the record coming out?
Depends on how many times the Boss remixes it, lol.
He did our last one, "The Gremlins Are Listening", about 40 times before it went to the printer.
He got a new mastering program since then, too; no doubt he'll be playing with that a good bit also.
I'm hoping in time for EOY lists, lmao; but that's pushing it.
Krishna Das
I see you have Yo La Tengo on the playlist this week... welp, I've been listening to Sleepyhead (hint) who used to share a rehearsal space with Yo La Tengo. You can hear about that on Wednesday. :)
Indeed I do! Looking forward to hearing all about Sleepyhead tomorrow.
Isaac Hayes' Black Moses and Nikki Lane's Highway Queen!
Now, that's a good 1-2 combo!
Immediate playlist material.
https://open.spotify.com/track/44LAHDPaM5dvkmmD5w1W84?si=58377b174c7047ae
Thanks Nikki! Stayed tuned for more on the band coming up soon.
Listened to new albums from Pom Poko, Wishy and The Slippers for a new episode of Will’s Band of the Week. The Slippers was definitely my favorite.
love the first two, will have to check out the third
Really loving that Pom Poko album! The Slippers are very twee. But I am kind of a sucker for mid-fi twee stuff though.
oh I'm really into twee
This Wishy record is incredible. Just listened to the episode, and dug both of these bands.
For anyone scrolling the comments, you can check it out here:

Feels like the summer slowdown has officially ended. So much great new music out in the last few weeks; here's 5 in the rock lane in heavy rotation:
Fake Fruit - Mucho Mistrust -- https://fakefruitmusic.bandcamp.com/album/mucho-mistrust (I hate the term "anuglar" when describing post-punk, but if I have to use it, this Oakland band is it)
Chime School -- The Boy Who Ran the Paisley Hotel -- https://chimeschool.bandcamp.com/album/the-boy-who-ran-the-paisley-hotel (Slumberland records and the Bay Area continues its run/dominance)
And SF dominates the year, even from the past. This 90s garage emo-ish record from henry's dress was just re-released. Catching me like Everyone Asked About You did last year - https://henrysdress.bandcamp.com/album/bust-em-green
Head Portals - A Lesson in Object Performance - https://headportals.bandcamp.com/album/a-lesson-in-object-permanence (Salt Lake City shoegaze/slowcore band with some very heavy and beautiful songs)
Soft Boiled - https://softboiledband.bandcamp.com/album/slice-of-life (super fun indie rock from Seattle)
Chime School! Yes!
And was thrilled to see that the artist behind my favorite record of 2024, Heems, just dropped his second of the year. Not quite as innovative and intricate production wise, but the lyrics are that much more heartfelt: https://heems.bandcamp.com/album/veena

After hearing about Renee Rapp’s beleaguered set at Reading this weekend, I’ve been listening to her album Snow Angel. I actually really like it.
I was late to the Fontaines party, but am 100% here now. really enjoying their latest!
I saw a ton of stories about Rapp over the last two days. Sounds like she took it all in stride?
I believe so! She seems to have dealt incredibly well with the situation. It’s certainly brought her to my attention.
Thanks for including us on the playlist! Being in great company is a happy way to kick off my week.
Last week was about:

Not sure what to make of the new Fontaines DC myself. I’ve played it a few times and still not sure
Of course! Looking forward to sharing more as the singles are released.
Gingersol isn't ringng a bell for me, but that description sounds awesome.
NEW & EXCEPTIONALLY SHINY
* Fontaines D.C. 'Romance' - While I miss the grit, I like the altpoprock pivot.
NEW MELLOW BEAUTY - Descriptors incl.: Spectral, gentle, captivating, etc...
* Gillian Welch & David Rawlings 'Woodland'
* Emily Wurramara 'Nara'
* The Secret Beach 'We Were Born Here, What's Your Excuse' - Shades of The Weakerthans, in a good way.
SHOEGAZY... or just textured headphone candy?
* Blushing 'Sugarcoat' - Loud dream pop.
* Starflyer 59 'Lust For Gold' Hazy & warm, Floyd / shoegaze adjacent?
* Gift 'Illuminator' - 90's altrocky goodness.
GOOD BUT... - I'm hesitant to share less than positive views but I'm curious to potentially hear what others think.
* Illuminati Hotties 'Power' - Fun, w/ done good tunes, but I miss the unhinged, noisy punk energy of earlier albums.
* Chime School 'The Boy Who Ran the Paisley Hotel' - A bit too retro and samey for me to love on the 1st listen.
* Spirit of the Beehive 'You'll Have To Lose Something' - Unique as ever but not my favorite.
* Horse Jumper of Love 'Disaster Trick' - Zzzzz.
* Magdalena Bay 'Imaginal Disk' - Sounds like music made exclusively by machines. Maybe I'm just old?
* Fake Fruit 'Mucho Mistrust' - A bit TOO discordant & most for me but I appreciated it. Yet again, am I too old?
Lots of stuff I’ll need to check out. Glad you gave Starflyer ‘59 a shout. Really enjoying them. You’ll see I had both Fake Fruit and Chime School on my list of 5. I agree both take a bit of time to get in to. But they get there. I don’t think chime school approaches neutrals or The Umbrellas or even lightheaded in terms of what Slumberland has released this year. But still very good. And that’s a high bar.
Agree that Chime School thus far is my least favorite release from Slumberland but it will get at least one more listen. Starflyer 59 is a favorite!
Really liked the Starflyer 59 record. Chime School as well. The Illuminatti Hotties release is on my "to listen" list. Hoping to check it out today.
If you are unfamiliar with her earlier work be sure to give it a listen.
Starflyer 59 is indeed most excellent.
Will do!
Is it Monday already?! Here's my Recent and Decent playlist. https://open.substack.com/pub/recentanddecent/p/recent-and-decent-35?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=1z6rnh
Thanks for the link, Matt!
New:
The Smile - new album??? Internet sleuths are all over this. Album 3 on the horizon? https://www.instagram.com/p/C_G1FZTJqoE/?igsh=dXM0M2xneTI3dDdn
Old:
The Drones. TV Priest. Idles.
GREAT LIST! IT'S OKAY TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS WHEN YOU'RE EXCITED ABOUT A GOOD RECORD. :)
The new Fontaines DC album is very good. They're like a depressed Happy Mondays.
Lol. That's a fantastic description.
I have been listening o this whole show all week. thanks.
Hi Marcia--
Welcome! I'm glad you're here! I know some people have strong thoughts about Adams the person, but I also believe you can spearate the art from the person. We like what we like, right? I happen to like his version of Taylor Swift's 1989, and love, "New York, New York."
Also: Old favorites are always welcome. :)
Travis - L.A. Times
Moby - Always Centered at Night (3rd St. DJ Mix)
Loretta Lynn - Don't Come Home a Drinkin'
Nice!
The new Jack White has not left my turntable for a few weeks now.
Had pretty good luck in the bargain bin at the record store on Friday. Picked up some Jimmy Buffett, Pine Hill Haints, and CSN on the cheap. Going to spin those this morning while I work.
No Name is a great record!
Oh nice! Which Buffett record?
Coconut Telegraph. It’s not my favorite one, but it’s got a few good tunes and the price was right.
I'm currently travelling, so my next spin as soon as I get back home to my records is most probably going to be Little Milton.
Safe travels, Andy!
Thank you!

Zambia Dub with Yabby You is my second favourite dub track.
Always a good time for King Tubby!
Hex Dispensers. Forest Ray Colson has been stuck in my head all weekend.
https://youtu.be/zX15jlFdhQE?feature=shared
I'm on it!
Cloud Cult’s new album released so I’ve been listening to that in anticipation of their live show here in early September 😍.
https://open.spotify.com/album/4QqFuIU0yjSXPuV0oLdvlL?si=BUL-EjEmS5OSWhzV0cLfhw
This is a great album
Oh nice! I haven't heard this yet. Gotta change that ASAP.
Off topic, but how's the garden coming in?
Garden is wilding right now! Gearing up to do some canning and freezing over the weekend!
Reptile is such a classic.
I've been basshunting again this week, and had Beefeater recommended to me by a fellow bass player, so doing a little bit of a dive with them and then with Red Fang and then Government Issue.
I just talked about them in my post today, but I'll keep hyping them up. Cowgirl: Jesus and Mary Chain meets Dandy Warhols. My favorite recent record. https://open.spotify.com/album/52aPjyDXg540l5xU1NTpUT?si=vA1JjVRkSU-O23c7HhYTHQ
I haven't caught up on reading yet, but that combo sounds like it'll check a lot of boxes for me!
Hey hey glad girls!!
Yep, i'm in on the new Fontaines Dublin City as well. It's excellent. Always fun to see a band you love take it to the next level. It is too bad that you won't see them in the small venues anymore, but you can always brag that you did. :)
I was so happy they played that this weekened!
Ooooo... "Reptile" That reminds me (as you always do) that I have a legacy interview with Marty Wilson-Piper and Peter Koppes I should post!
Yes please!
Ned's Atomic Dustbin, naturally. I have lots of thoughts. 😁
Lol. I'm looking forward to reading the upcoming article!
Some great new songs to my Top Ten of the week:
The Hurtin' Kind - Orville Peck & Midland https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhgG2zOKih4
Feel - Pet Shop Boys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds9tuIp-JrU
Die with a Smile - Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPa7bsKwL-c
Perfect Me - Blossoms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxDRg8JKcnA

I really like the Beck track from the Orville Peck album
Yes! There are SO many good songs on the album!
I’ve just listened to it all the way through for the first time. It’s excellent!
I particularly like Midnight Ride and his cover of Rhinestone Cowboy!
These are both great! Also, Where Are We Now? and the cover of Papa Was A Rodeo. It’s all so good.
Great list! I'm oving the new Kate Pierson track.
Hunting Lions
And back to basics, Suffer, No Control, and Against the Grain from Bad Religion.
Finished up the weekend with Albert King.
That's one of the best 3 album runs I can think of.
I haven't heard The Lightning Seeds in quite some time. Gonna change that ASAP.
There is a line in Tito "under the Milky Way tonight". Is this what prompted the inclusion of "Reptile" in your playlist?
As the writer of "Tito," I can tell you that was a purposeful reference on my part. ;-)
Very cool.
Great track too. Forgot to mention that.....
Thank you!
I'd love to say yes (I mean, how cool would that be?), but it's just a happy coincidence. Maybe Dave's lyrics worked their way into my subconcious?
A few highlights from this week would be Waylon Jennings and PIG. The long story is here/hear: https://weatheredmusic.ca/2024/08/26/34-52/
That's quite a mix, Norman! I Love it.
Neil Young - Harvest Moon
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti, Coda and IV
Phil Collins - No Jacket Required live versions
Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - Moanin'
Jason Isbell - Southeastern
Nice! Southeastern is an all-timer.
I can’t stop listening to the Elvis “Memphis” box set. It’s glued to my streamer. And my mouse is broken. Or at least that is what I telling people who say “you must be kidding”
Lol. We like what we like!

A few weeks ago someone posted here about the band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. Glad I checked them out because I’m LOVING The Future Is Our Way Out!!
Last but not least I’m digging the GIFT album Illuminator
That Stereolab album is soooooooooo nostalgic for me. Love this playlist
Same, and I'm happy you liked the list!
I know everyone has their favorites, but Peng! never gets enough love, IMO.
During the week, I had to fly Sydney-Perth and back in two days. This is one of my favourite playlists for journeys like that. Rock and/or roll from Elvis to Screaming Females; Gymshorts to the Seeds and of course the Scientists.

That's a great list! Always happy to see The Seeds get some love. Without looking, that's gotta be a 3-4 hour flight, right?
Going west - Sydney to Perth - is a solid 4.5hours. Coming abck is just under 4. Pretty brutal slog! Basically LA-NYC...

For anyone scrolling the comments: If you only show up on Mondays, you've been missing out on a really cool project Sam and I are putting togehter.
New stuff this week:
No revisits this past week.
I've been spending some time with the new Chime School, Damnwells, Quivers, Futurebirds, and Wishy albums, as well as celebrating Elvis Costello and Jeff Tweedy's birthdays with their music.
I stumbled upon Shane Smith and the Saints “Live at Red Rocks”…a thoroughly fun time
