Would I give Holland a 2/10? No, but I do think that review is fair. "Sail On, Sailor" is one helluva start to the album, and "Steamboat" is the definition of a grower, but Mike Love's California Saga kills any momentum. I love the "Big Sur" take from last year's box set, but the version here, along with the other two songs have no reason to be on the album. They're just plain corny. I do disagree on "Trader" as it is one of my favorite Carl numbers, and "Funky Pretty" is a fun one. We all know The Beach Boys often left the best stuff on the floor, and some of the other numbers in the new box like Denny's "Carry Me Home" would have been a better choice than Mike's little opera.
Carl and the Passions is the better of the albums from this era. Unfairly maligned when it came out, I think it's some of their strongest 70s material. This is the first time I'm publicly sharing this, but Apple Music says Carl and the Passions was my most listened to album of last year, and I don't doubt that...
Thanks for sharing this! The Limewire/Kazaa graphic took me back. Lol. Also: how is “A Forest” 40?!
About Beachhead's lyric, "Heaven knows I'm miserable now." That's the title of a Smiths song! Homage.
I was hoping someone would catch that!
Ethel Cain and older Interpol!

Thanks to you I’ve been going further into their 70s stuff.
I don’t identify as a “music nerd,” but I’m here for a few reasons:
1) I enjoy music and like discovering obscure artists I wouldn’t otherwise.
2) Music is my 24-year-old son’s love language. I got him a new record player and a “mixtape” vinyl subscription for Christmas.
3) I want to purchase a record player and get lost in music at least a few nights a month and search for albums at thrift shops.
4) Jeff Beck?! I have been living under a rock this week and had no idea!
Thanks for your consistent reviews, your dedication to sharing, and for keeping me informed. Maybe I’ll be a music nerd one day!
(Also, January has kicked my ass and I’m catching up reading posts. On Repeat is my first ‘stack to visit!)
Join us! We have cool jackets and everything. :)
Seriously, I'm really happy you're here and are finding new stuff to listen to.
