You have me listening to New Order again! The song Ceremony was featured on the soundtrack to Marie Antoinette. Love that soundtrack. Do you have a favorite soundtrack?
Good morning, Kevin! First of all, thanks for including me in today’s post...🫵 ROCK!!! Second, I appreciate you letting us in on what makes you the writer on Substack I look forward to reading the most.
I may be able to help you out with getting in touch with the rockstar that is Michael Gurley...I do have his number. 🤩 He is a super nice guy and I cannot wait (fingers crossed) for you to interview him.
So you are a Muses fan???!! I kind of know a girl...a Rat Girl to be exact. Kristin’s mom, Crane, and my mom worked together at the War College in Newport, RI back in the early ‘70s. My mom even has two beautiful sketches of Crane’s that have hung in her house for as long as I can remember. Imagine my surprise when, as a junior in high school now living in Virginia Beach, I opened Rolling Stone magazine to see Kristin in black leather and short black hair. The few pictures of I have of us growing up have her sporting her natural beautiful blonde hair. She looked amazing and I was totally blown away! Our families lived in the same apartment building at 20 Fenner Avenue in Newport. Mine on the 2nd floor and hers on the first. It is really a very beautiful three story home that was made into three apartments.
1,000 Miles Away is one of my favorite Hoodoo Guru songs too!!! They were supposed to play the NorVa last year, having canceled and rescheduled for almost 2 years because of the pandemic, before finally canceling for good. I was super bummed since them coming to play in Virginia was probably a once in a lifetime gig.
As you know, my Substack newsletter, At A Low Hum, hasn’t had a new post in a while. I need to take your suggestion and block off some time just to write. I’m also going to do some research on finding a course I could take on writing for social media. I am not a great writer to begin with so it won’t be an easy A for me. Did I miss where you said what grade you did get?
Music brings an incredible amount of joy to my life, and I can’t imagine a world
without it, so please keep doing what you’re doing!!!
Question for your next mailbag: I was watching the Bruins-Senators game last night and there was a break in the action when the puck went out of play. While the players were lining up for a face-off, the PA played The Stooges' "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog". Pretty racy song for a professional sporting event, no? So, my question is this: What's the most inappropriate song you've ever heard in a public venue? Follow up question: Were you as giddy as I was when you heard it?
I'm gonna have to think about that one! I don't I've heard anything close to that. Maybe "Get Low" by Lil' Jon? Whatever it was, I'm sure I was giddy- my inner 14 year old comes out any time I'm in an arena.
I love that question about unknown opening acts that became favorites. I thought of two right away. Both ofmthem opened for Nancy Griffith a few years apart. One is Iris Dement, who remains a favorite. And the other is Mary Gauthier, who I hadn't heard in years. It was this song, "I Drink," that sent me reeling during that first show. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ1aPaP1_Ew
I'll take the question compliment, as I was the one who asked it!;) But I'm really responding to your picks! Wow- Iris Dement and Mary Gauthier as opening acts? Two of my favorites. I wonder if Nancy hand picked them as openers.
Yeah, it was two for two on those opening acts. Gauthier was more like a great dinner date where you realize you're in love during dessert. Dement was immediate love, as in halfway through the first note.
I first heard Iris Dement when she and John Prine sang "In Spite of Ourselves" together. What a voice! I'm not sure I've heard of Gauthier before now. Thanks for the clip!
Well done!! And here's another Airport song for you. I remember my sister had this single and we thought it was so cool. Then, I was in a record store a few weeks ago and saw the album - and the song started up in my head like I had heard it the day before! But I didn't buy it - overpriced, LOL. https://youtu.be/nAN-LvFOGus
I have my favorite shops in NYC but whenever I go anywhere, I Google "record store" and see what I can see. In this case, I had to drive my son to Parsippany, NJ and found a super-cute spot in nearby Denville called Sweet Vinyl Café. Yes, they had coffee, sweets, and a bunch of records. I had a lot of time to kill and went through their entire stock, but the prices kept me from buying anything. For example, $30 for the second Emitt Rhodes album or $80 for Funkadelic's One Nation Under A Groove is definitely top dollar!

Great question!! I live the Singles soundtrack!
I LOVE
If we're talking soundtracks that are mostly collections of songs, a quick top 5 would be:
Inherent Vice
Until The End Of The World
Rushmore
More Music from 8 Mile
Wild At Heart
Rushmore is maybe my favorite!
Rushmore! Yes!
I'm always happy to see someone listening to more New Order! As for soundtracks, good question! I'd have to say,
-Singles
-24 Hour Party People
-To Live And Die In LA
-Pretty in Pink
Might be bending the rules a bit, but I'm also going to try and work Stop Making Sense on to the list. :)
Wang Chung! Awesome soundtrack.
Right? And it sounds as good as ever.
I also like the soundtrack from Chasing Mavericks. Mathew Sweet and The Lemonheads are two faves!!
Cure is coming to the Bowl this summer
Right on! Will you be working?

First, thank you for the kind words! That really means a lot to me. :)
I am a HUGE Muses fan. I'm actually reading Hersh's "Rat Girl" right now. Love that you knew her back in the day. Do you ever talk to her?
Virginia Beach was our first post-COVID trip & we loved it. I'm ready to go back. :)
I wound up getting an A, but it was tougher than I thought it was gonna be.
I talked to her long ago when she was on Facebook, and now often through Twitter.
Love this! I'm pretty sure Whitney Houston was my first record 😁 lol...so lame.
Lol. We like what we like!

P.S. Let's go Bruins!
Such a cool way of getting to know more about you and discovering music! Thank you for taking the time to do this.

You sure have a way with descriptors. I love it!

A record store...where?!

Little out of my price range too
Although, I did just pay $40 for an album...but it’s signed by Wolfgang Van Halen.
This pretty much should be number 1 on any Airport/Airplane song list. Great band -- hope you find a cheaper album copy one day!
Well, I do try to have a smiling face while I'm there. lol. Do you remember what they were asking for it?
Thanks for answering my question Kevin!
Airportman! Heck yeah!
One of my favorites! The airport can be a washed out fluorescent place at 4AM. That song always reminds me of it.
Thanks for taking to time to answer each question so thoroughly. Another very interesting read.
Shameless plug again... I’ve written a new piece on one of my favorite bands. I’d appreciate your feedback.

Great picks!
