As I’m in the middle of compiling my own “100 Favorite Songs of 2022,” listening to anything else before 1/1/23 is a pipe dream, but I’ve noted a few things I was unaware of here that sound right up my alley! Patchnotes, Patches (clearly you have a thing for Patch bands!), and Mo Datti. I have a similar feeling about Band of Horses that you do. Where a good bit of their stuff goes in one ear and out the other and then something wows me and I’m all, “that was Band of Horses?” I know this is probably sacrilege, but I feel the same with War on Drugs. Most of it sounds like window dressing and then a song will floor me and I go back and play an entire album, thinking I overlooked something magical, but no, it’s just the diamonds in the rough that get me.
Excellent list so far, Kevin! So glad to see Superchunk on here, they very well may be #51 on my Top 50 list. Either way, it's been amazing listening to them grow in their sound. Adding Mo Datti as that one is completely new to me!
Have to disagree on Bland of Horses (not a typo). In my book, they are one of those groups that released an untouchable debut and has never figured out how to recapture the magic, even if they've gone on to have many charting adult contemporary hits. Maybe it was also because I was working at the Evil Mermaid Coffee Shoppe during the second and third records, which played overhead a million times. I will say, my favorite BoH related thing is Tyler Ramsey, if you've never given him a listen. He wasn't around for the first record, and I'm pretty sure he quit before the new one, but man, do I love him as a singer-songwriter. The Valley Wind is his best album, but they're honestly all great and 2019's For the Morning was stellar.
Band of Horses was one of the last to make the cut. I love “Crutch,” and that’s what ultimately put it over the top.
That said, I can /absolutely/ relate to being subject to mandatory in-store play. If you ever want to see me get irrationally angry, ask me about 4 Non-Blondes…

I feel like every time I listen to TWOD, I find a new track I really enjoy.
We like what we like, right? 😀

Looking forward to what's next!

Excellent list so far. Highlights? Being introduced to patchnotes and The Linda Lindas.
Also… I sent you an email about collaborating on a music-themed Substack letter-thread. You in? I'm thinking Canada v. USA could be fun.
Linda Linda’s were a revelation for me. Wish I coulda been that talented in 9th grade!
As for letters? Totally in!
Great list so far!!! Loved that Spoon record.
Right? About every 2 months, I absolutely binge it. Then set aside for a few weeks & repeat.
So glad to see Artsick on this list. I felt like an unpaid shill for Slumberland in 2022. Everything they put out clicked with me.
Looking forward to Parts 2 and 3!
Lol. That’s how I feel about Young Gun Silver Fox! And you’re right; Slumberland couldn’t miss this year.
I'm with Steve, but I've noted down Artsick and Patches for a future listen.
I think you’ll really like both. Very different sounds, but both are fantastic.
Golden Hour is SUCH a vibe. Thanks, Kevin!
Also, a thousand curses upon you for Band of Horses. That mutant cat thumbnail will haunt my dreams. 🫣
Haha. Sorry man! But it’s a great song despite the video.
