Actually taken aback by the writer William Browning's reference to "mediocre" B sides since I'm working on a post for the Guy Stevens Weather Report on the origin of B sides and how they were vital to record sales and song promotion. Outside of that, love this post! Cheers, Mike
I referenced that same Smithsonian piece in my article on Charles Brown. Love Reddingβs cover, and Elvis Presleyβs version also is a good time. Happy holidays!
Oh, it was. Having a baby in the family makes sure it has to be...
BTW: I don't think Charles Brown gets enough of the kind of credit he deserves. "Driftin' Blues" is one of the greatest songs in its genre of all time...
I don't think I've ever heard Charles Brown's version of it, but I used to have one that was a duet with Bonnie Raitt, and of course that was wonderful. I have heard Cee-lo's cover and I like that one, and because I was a teenage girl in the 90s, I also really like the rendition done by Hanson.
Catching up on my Substack reading on a bus from Petra to Amman after six days of amazing hiking in Jordan. WiFi is extremely spotty but will give this a listen when I get to the hotel. Hope the holiday season was wonderful for you Kevin, wishing you all the best for 2024!

That surprised me too, though I'm guessing it was said more as an aside than anything else.
Merry Christmas, Kevin, and thanks for bringing joy into my life with your fantastic newsletter!!
Thank you, and the same to you with 'Hello Universe!"

Happy holidays to you & yours as well, Glenn!
Classic song and a great performance! I dig the James Brown version, too, included here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3zbgUpkG4oVLJALSWre7kf?si=TXQM2SV0SVWxVBQpcE13QQ
YES!
Merry Christmas!
Merry (belated) Christmas to you too, Matt!
Feliz Navidad! Springsteen definitely crushed this cover. A staple around the holidays, along with Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
And merry Christmas!!
Thank you, Jeremy! I hope yours was awesome.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Kate!
Merry Christmas Kevin. Fantastic track and definitely a top Christmas song.
Thank you! I hope yours was good as well. A top Christmas song for sure!

Redding's version is superb- the organ and sleigh bells are a nice touch. Merry Christmas, Kevin.

There isnβt another Christmas song that tops this. Even his alternate takes of the track are just as good. β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ

Nice! Iβm not sure Iβve ever heard either of those. Iβll have to check them out!
