So much to contemplate when discussing him, but I think the concert for Bangladesh stands apart because it was a key moment for rock music. Coming after the tumult of the late 60s it showed how rock artists could unite behind a humanitarian cause, something we’ve continued to see since then.
Such cool neighbours! I love George. He's my dad's favourite Beatle too, so I grew up paying more attention to him than average, I'd say. My dad is obsessed with the Bangladesh concert. Such cool memories of my childhood, not to mention the transcendence of it in music history. If I had to pick a Harrison song off the top of my head I'd say "Something". The simplicity of the lyrics and the sensual/longing vibe of the melody just make it timeless.
I did not grow up in a home where The Beatles were really listened to or talked about. Not for any particular reason. My single mother just didn't care for them.
Well in 2020 (of course), I needed something new in music. Something was telling me to dive into The Beatles and I can honestly say I've not been the same music listener ever since.
George is probably my favorite as well for all the reasons you've described here. I love the guy who is so important to the band yet seeks no attention. And unbeknownst to me, once I started really listening to The Beatles, most of my favorite were written by Harrison.
"All Things Must Pass" is still his standout solo album to me. Not that the others aren't great but that one hit me hardest.
"Out of the Blue" is probably my favorite song from that album. It's just too good of a jam.
I dig your story, Derek! I saw The Beatles (when I was 8, and sitting, riveted, in front of the TV) when they were on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in '64. Life: You now have a direction! You might enjoy this article I featured two Junes ago about two of my fave George songs from his two eras: Beatles and solo: https://bradkyle.substack.com/p/beatle-royale-dont-bother-me-and
Enjoy, Derek, and hope we meet again in the virtual realm!
Harrison was special, and I think he would have made an impact even if he'd never been a Beatle. His solo work has often been panned by the criticsm probably because he doesn't hide his spirituality, but I think all of his solo albums are worth a listen. As well as, of course, the Travelling Wilburys.
Plus he put up money for the making of Monty Python's 'Life of Brian', and said he did so because he wanted to see the film. What better reason to invest?
The “Octopus’s Garden” dish better win based on cost alone! Also Team George around here and danced to “I Live For You” for our first dance. Coincidentally also had the first Wilburys album on last night, which somehow never gets old.
He produced the Radha Krishna Temple track 'Govinda' and that is a big one for me. Also concert for bangladesh, plus grace under pressure when your BEST FRIEND nicks your wife and then makes himself center stage at your memorial concert (bad so bad). Go away Clapton and keep walking.
I grew up totally with Beatles everything but loved Paul. Tsk how wrong I was.
I went to Atlanta from the Tampa Bay Area to see George in concert in November of 1974. I was 17. I flew to Atlanta and hitched back. My favorite song is All Things Must Pass as well as it being my favorite album set 😎
Of course - another thing we have in common Kev. Obviously we share George as a favorite. He may not have been given a ton of room on each album but his songs always hit in a way the others couldn't. I also appreciated how deeply spiritual and introspective he became with time. He saw beyond the flash of being a rock star and pulled others into using their platform for bigger causes. I even loved '80s Harrison and I'll fight anyone who didn't, lol.
Anything the Traveling Wilburys did with George...Thanks George!!! Some of my best young adult memories have their music in the background and bring me wonderful nostalgia when I hear them play...and I always think of the other great musicians that contributed as well to the Wilburys...but George is always the first I think of.

That's a favorite of my too! great minds think alike. :)

Looking forward to checking it out. Thanks for sharing!
My mom played them a little bit, but really only the early stuff (ie. "I want To Hold Your Hand.").
BIG fan of his song "You" off Extra Texture. Among others of course.

Rest well, George.
The Wilburys get a lot of airplay at our house.

I love it! That's an awesome first song.
Going off memory, but my favorite for food dishes is/was "Oh-Bla-Di, Oh-Blasagna."
There was also "Something," but I think those were actually just cookies.
Would love that party. I too would pick up a George tag
Yes! We need more Georges!
Nice piece. I dont know much about the man, but you make him sound a hero
Thank you! If you get a chance, check out some of his music.

Good point about grace under fire!
For someone who stood in the shadow of true greatness, George was great himself.
It's kind of like Scottie Pippen while he was on the team with Jordan, I think.
That's a great analogy!
Frank Sinatra said “Something” was the best love song written in the last 50 years
Two huge hits written about Patti Boyd... “Something” and “Layla”.
I can't believe it's been so long! While My Guitar Gently Weeps has been one of my favorites since I was a teenager.
One of my faves as well!
Beatles dishes ideas:
Maxwell's Silver Hamburger
Lettuce Beef
Martha My Deer (a venison dish)
Why Don't We Do It In The Rocky Road
and if you're too late for the Beatles food party, you can always just have some Wings
Lol. those are awesome. Next time this comes around, I'll hit you up for ideas!

That's quite a story! How far away was home?
Largo, Florida.

Lol. '80s Harrison is awesome- I've got your back!

Nelson Wilbury is my favorite Wilbury!
