Speaking of records that took a while to hit, after reading your take on Basement 5, I found it on YT and played it…and then again…and then a 3rd time. What a record! Thanks for getting that on my radar.
I love Wussy so missed the release and thanks for the reminder. I also read the Basement 5 love-in and am checking it out too, not sure why I missed them first time round.
As you know, I only first listened to Doolittle recently and I haven’t given any other Pixies albums much listening at all. From that perspective I really like The Night The Zombies Came. You’re So Impatient and Motorola are stand outs for sure but I find the whole thing very satisfying and I really love Kings of the Prairie. Divorced from the rest of their catalogue I think it’s a good record.
You’ve made a great point here (and done it much better than I did!): to give this record a fair/objective listen, you have to separate it out from the rest of their material. This was much easier said than done for me.
I am admittedly a bit late to the party but just dropping in to say I’m really enjoying Elmiene’s album “Anyway I Can”. No idea exactly when it came out but it was this year. For R&B/soul lovers, this is good stuff, not always easy to find in this genre.
Call me crotchety, but I think it's impossible not to compare an artist's/band's new albums with their back catalog. Sure, it's unfair to not recognize growth, change, band-member shifts, but I can't shut off what is already deep in my bones and memory.
I do compare the more recent Pixies albums to the past, for the same reasons you describe, and I can also give the newer stuff a few hopeful plays and decide that the songs just aren't there. That the lyrics aren't saying anything that stays with me. It's not just FB who feels lackluster to me on the new album, it's the usually high-voltage Joey Santiago and David Lovering. I actually liked their previous post-KD albums a bit more than this one (faint praise).
I do appreciate the emphasis on more dual vocals here, but it also triggered the comparison to Kim Deal and not in a good way.
On the plus side -- thanks for the tip that there's a new Wussy album!
The Hoffs and Lone Justice albums are, have been, and will continue to be in heavy rotation.
You e inspired me to try Wussy again, maybe this time it will hit!
I hope it does!

Looking forward to all the new Wussy music.
Same! The LP is soooo good. I know I should try and be a little more objective with these things, but man, it’s not easy!

A nearly six hour Miles Davis archival release for me!
I did enjoy the Pixies and LJ.
