I love playlists. The earliest I can remember (at my age, that is a real feat) was on cassette in 1974. A memorable one was on my iPod in 2009 for our epic road trip. We drove through 27 states, and I created playlists for each one that I would cue up as we entered each state. I also had some for cities. I had a problem with iTunes and lost the list, but I have the memories. I still make playlists like the one I played today while mowing the lawn.
In a previous life, I was a pastor in a recovery community, and I believed, and still do, that music can contribute to healing. Part of that came through a band that I cobbled together, all better musicians than me. These are some of the songs we played covers of, hence the word Cover in the band's name. Our Dad was God, hence, My Dad's Cover Band.
When we drive across the country Frank and I have at least one playlist that has an equal number of his favorite songs as well as mine. We then hit shuffle and let them play through. All genres are included. We often break off from the list for a while and listen to podcasts but music plays a big part of our drives.
Most come from the Top Ten lists we create at the end of every year as opposed to specific "road" songs. We drove to and from Cleveland last week (about 6 hours each way) and listened to new music from Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist. We skip any songs that aren't working for either of us. So it's hard to narrow down specific songs! I will say that there are multiple tracks on the former lists from some of our old favorites such as Madonna, Sade, Melissa Manchester, Tears for Fears, and Cher - yes, we like a lot of pop on our road trips!
BTW Kevin, other than the album, I have no idea what a four-calendar cafe is.
That’s from William Least Heat Moon’s book “Blue Highways.”
The idea being that the more calendars on the walls, the better the food.
• No calendar: same as an interstate pit-stop.
• One calendar: Preprocessed food assembled in New Jersey.
• Two calendars: Only if fish trophies present.
• Three calendars: Can’t miss on the farm-boy breakfasts.
• Four calendars: Try the ho-made pie, too.
• Five calendars: Keep it under your hat or they’ll franchise.
Oh my brother, in that case do I ever have a few 8 calendar cafes in Marion County Illinois and Little Egypt to show you…
Here for it! 😀
Debating whether to turn this into a post on mine or just list it here...

Gotcha! Interested to hear about the recovery community.

Any easily recognizable or obscure favorites from your road trip playlist you'd like to share?
