I am really bad an anything sci-fi related (when I say really bad I mean: oh, Rocket Man by Elton John, perhaps? No, sci-fi, sci-fi, for real, not just space-related 😅). That’s how bad I am. So kudos to you for coming up with all this. And I agree: lists rock!
I've always had a love/hate relationship with "Space Invaders" by The Pretenders. To behonest, the song still kinda annoys me... and yet I play it through every time. FWIW - check out the new Idris Elba show on Apple... all takes place on a plane. Your basic hero/villian stuff. I think Idris may be turning into the new Liam Neeson... but I digress... no wait, Top Five movies about airplanes. For me, #'s 1-5 Airplane. Great list Kevin!!
Space Invader is definitely a cool little bridge track, with actual sound effects from the Space Invaders video game at the end of the track before the band kicks into The Wait.
I’d argue that any sci-if playlist must have at least one Sun Ra song. But his catalogue is vast and much of his stuff is pretty far out there, both figuratively (which fits the theme) and literally (which may turn off listeners). His 1979 song UFO, however, is a jam heavily influenced by Funkadelic that still retains Sun Ra’s signature intergalactic sound.
I have loved this band since high school when my friend Iain introduced them to me and although they didn't release much as the band Shake, members of the band are linked to all the following bands: Boots For Dancing, The Human League, The League Unlimited Orchestra, The Rezillos, Terrible Lizard, The Teardrop Explodes, Telex, Fashion, The Turquoise Swimming Pools, and TV21 (who are one of my favourites). Also my friend Iain started a record label and called it Shake Records and also had a cool store by that name, so they are a band that is very dear to my heart.
I had never heard of Atticus Fault before, and now I'm over here loving "First Trip to Mars." Great choice!
If I were to make a sci-fi songs list, I'd include Pat Benatar's "My Clone Sleeps Alone." It's spectacular. https://youtu.be/Ybo6fIwj9wA?si=IjXLkIS9V6LoAl0F
I don't think I've ever heard this! Did it chart?
It was never a single... just a trippy album track waiting to surprise people who loved "Heartbreaker."

Space (and aerospace) are about it for me. Maybe The Jetsons too, but not awhole lot after that.
I hear you!
Another coincidence! Left work last night with that B-52s record on the turntable and played it first thing this morning. It’s 43 years old!!
Hard to believe isn't it?

I think I accidentally answered on Notes, but thank you for this & the Idris Elba rec. I'm on it!

I'm happy I'm not the only one that likes it!

For a slightly more conventional (and more recent) song, I also recommend Spud Infinity by Big Thief.
Hard to argue against that!
Kevin, this is perfect - exactly what I was thinking. Very well done!
Thank you! Not knowing as much about Sci_Fi as the others, I was wondering if it would land.
IMO, this is more about music (and personal taste) than sci-fi. Honestly, mine are mostly like that too- I just want to share my view with folks.
Music is a really cool angle, though! I just wish we could do it again.

Hey Kevin, here is an obscure one for you - https://youtu.be/riTaWz0XEjo?feature=shared
This is awesome! How on Earth did you find it?

Troy Tate from Shake also produced a few songs by The Smiths :)
Two words...Hawk. Wind. Pretty much the whole album « Quark Strangeness and Charm!! But particularly the title track! https://open.spotify.com/track/1Cl7fBXGCv6dci0qIsqQkI?si=uz3sLtCfT8OhDUineb8TyA
In the spirit of slightly goofy SF songs, I really like Thomas Dolby's lightly melancholy "Europa and the pirate twins"

Yes! This is actually my favorite song of his.
That or "one of our submarines "
First song that popped into my head was "Bowie" by Flight of the Conchords. Bowie's in space...
Man, I miss that show!
I nominate "The Boy In the Bubble" by Paul Simon on his Graceland album.
Great pick!
