This is a mammoth undertaking and one I’m not sure I could do so go you!

Thanks! It's either one of the more ambitious things I've taken on, or one of the more absurd. Maybe both. lol. Sure has been fun, though!

Glad to see my hometown band, the Meat Puppets, represented! And, to answer your question, no, Zonies (Arizonians) don't have accents. 😁

I haven’t listened to them since middle school, and Kevin’s pick motivated me to relisten to this album. I’m so glad I did.

Kevin, some excellent choices. Some albums I have to revisit. And some that deserve higher placement. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not sure I thought I would ever see the words "Sweaty Nipples" and "The Replacements" so close together... and I love it. That remix of Tim is full on brilliant. Ed Stasium for President! You put it perfectly!

As far as Sweaty Nipples, I'll have to take your word on that one. ;)

Fun read, thanks for that. I am 100% with you on the Tim remaster debate. There's a concept that is well-known in sociology called "habitus." In short, it's the class-based disposition for how one interacts with the world. If you grew up working-class, as I did, you might prefer comfort food over a fussy salad.

I think about habitus a lot with music -- I think the sound and production of the records we came of age with often informs how we hear music going forward. I love the rough sound of Tim and other indie releases from that era, and it's often hard for me to adapt to modern pop that sounds so pristine. The Tim remaster sounds fine, but it feels off to me like Westerberg eating a fussy salad.

Maybe it's because I was born after the Replacement's heyday and didn't really get into them until around 2017-2018, so I don't have as much of an attachment to their original recordings. To me, Stasium gets their sounds and I would love it if he remixed their other records too. But that's what I allude to in the intro to my part three. It's interesting to see how our context shapes our relationship to music.

I've has similar conversations with younger U2 fans. I'm in my late 50s and have loved them since the early 80s, but I'm not as fond of their recent records. I know younger who came aboard with Beautiful Day or Vertigo and they view the newer stuff in a different light than me.

Yes, the shifting contexts of how and why we love music (and any culture, really) is fascinating. Appreciate your thoughts!

Sam Colt's avatar

I feel the same way about Kanye. I see young people bumping his stuff off Vultures and it’s just a shell of what he was putting out a decade ago. And I’m not a U2 fan by any stretch but their pre-Joshua Tree stuff is so much better than their later output but that could be because I think stadium rock that tries to be the voice of a generation is inherently corny.

I put it at their first show because I root for chaos and it’s been 30 years since they’ve released a decent album. I also think they’re massively overrated.

I love the Tower Records image. I remember walking to one in, it had to be, 2002 in San Francisco to buy Springsteen's new record (The Rising) at midnight.

Great job on this. It takes me back to the days when we walked to record stores at midnight to get shit done.

Love the Tower Records image, too. I made my first trip to San Francisco from the Midwest when I was 23. Walking into a Tower Records was overwhelming. I think I spent three hours there (and way too much money that I didn't have!).

I've been to SF three times and never made it. How does it compare to Amoeba?

Expand full comment
Dave Purcell's avatar

Good question. It's been so long ago now that I don't remember for sure other than I think Tower was two stories -- so like twice the side of Amoeba. I could be wrong, though, as I haven't been to that Tower since the early 90s.

When I saw Robbie Dupree's "Steal Away" on the list, I was instantly hooked—I'm a huge fan of that track. So, you can imagine my disappointment when I found out it wouldn't be featured at all 😁. Thankfully, the album at n°80 delivers the perfect yacht-rock vibes, making up for the absence of Dupree's classic. Honestly, I'm not even sure which album "Steal Away" is from—maybe it’s a gem, or maybe it's a dud. Who knows?

I have to check it out. I remember I bought the vinyl single at the time because I adored the song. Never even listened to the album. I did catalogue at Warner in Belgium so I must have looked for it then. I'm into Yacht-Rock this week as I just finished the next episode on the Doobie Brothers 😃 Anyway.. the great thing of Substack and the music community is that you keep on re-discovering things.

I thought maybe there might be a Dupre/Dupree connection to your comment (perhaps subliminally?). I also was bummed this yacht-rock classic wasn't on the list (yet!). I do hope the genre does get some love in the next 7 installments. Seals and Crofts, maybe?

Robbie is my father ! 😁 No, I'm joking. There's no connection. The name I use here is my dj name and is a (loosely) translation in French of my (flemish) name. I decided to use the dj name because of the connection with the weekly mixes on mixcloud. And, after all, I'm writing about dj's & dance music so it's also staying on topic 😃

My Name is Jonas from Weezer’s Blue album is my favorite song on that album (full of favorites songs.) what a great placement.

I found the db’s by way of John Flansburgh singing about them in the song Twisting on TMBG’s Flood album. This is the only ever time I’ve seen anyone mention them! The Johns also covered a the Meat Puppets song Whirlpool from a much earlier album.

Ii like Bjork’s Homegenic slightly more than

Post but think Post is a great pick here too
